Hurricane Dean thread

brewers255

Hurricane Dean is supposed to hit anywhere between mexico and Louisana right now. Right now its a catagory 1 hurricane with sustaned winds of 100 mph. It could become a cat. 5 and hit either Mexico to anywhere between Flordia. All the models are showing this thing hitting Texas. If this thing gets into the GOM and makes landfall near Houston all the refenries are in that area. This could effect the United States more than Katrina did, there saying gas prices could be over $5.00 for as long as 1 year. Just something to keep a eye on in the next 3-4 days. Thoughts on this?

Your spelling of Florida reminds me of when my cousin had her high school graduation party and had pictures on a board with her trip to "Flordia." I still give her crap for that. Also please don't take it as ragging on you because I've mispelled so many words in my life it isn't even funny but just seeing "Flordia" brought back good memories.

Now onto the hurricanes. They're pretty unpredictable and they pretty much suck overall. I just hope that people actually leave when they're warned about it. And the cities should send buses for anybody who can't leave. Also I'd like to know when there were 3 named storms this year? Damn I need to catch up on the news.http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/laugh.gif

I could vent this...but since their is already a Hurrican thread.

I like getting news on hurricanes. Obviously Katrina was a national news story.

But living in Wisconsin - I could care less about a tropical storm that is barely north of south america. EVERY time they find a new tropical storm they make it a national story. Frankly, 3 inches of rain and 40 MPH winds isn't newsworthy.

Now when we get to hurrican level and evacuation time - by all means, proceed.

I haven't kept track but I'm surprised there has only been 4 tropical storms this year. That seems pretty amazing.

Yeah sure gas prices will be $5

No chance in heck that will ever happen, it is just those darn doomsday predicting disaster over and over again. Sadly eventually they will be right and will be able to pat themselves on the back.

Just like 2006 was suppose to be so much worse than 2005, yeah that didnt happen.

Ill believe $5 gas prices when I see it, and I probably wont.

I blame Ned Yost for Hurricane Dean.

Latest update: Dean is now a Cat. 3 with 125 mph max sustained winds

It's just too early to tell whether it will hit the US coast or not, but if I lived anywhere on the Texas coast, I would start preparing today just in case. However, it looks like Jamaica is going to be directly hit on Sunday morning, barring some dramatic change in the projected path.

Well from looking at past forecasts it looks like the are slowly moving it more and more in to the gulf of mexico. simple formula the longer it spends in the gulf the worst it's going to be for whoever gets hit. I am hoping that it stays away from the U.S. but who ever gets hit is going to be in for a world of hurt and my prays are with them.

145 MPH Max Sustained winds. I dont think Jamacia is big enough to slow it down when its over land. Looks like a direct hit. Do these things ever have a way of breaking up in the gulf. This is not good timing, and no matter where it hits, gas prices are going to go up significantly.

I have several friends down in Tampa who I routinely quiz on hurricanes. Being a land-locked Midwesterner, I know I haven't the faintest idea how those things work. From what they tell me it's far worse when a Hurricane hits the Gulf, as the warmer waters allow it to build up strength and easily alter it's path. They basically compare it to a buzzsaw thay is building up steam before it rockets off in some unknown direction.

Yuck.

Cat 5 is as high as it gets, but is it possible for a hurricane to reach Category 6? There has to be a point where the winds get so high that they make a new category right?

No Cat 5 hurricanes are 155 mph sustained wind speeds or more. To determine how strong the storm is you just take the central air pressure reading. The strongest on record took place in 1935 when it hit the Florida Keys with a central air pressure of 26.35 inches.
