I don't mean to pick on Angel, but doesn't it seem weird that you can be suspended and still play in the Hawaiian Winter League? I would expect suspensions to apply there (and in the Arizona Fall League). Are the the fall and winter leagues not run by Minor League Baseball?

Look at this link at the bottom of MiLB.com's Scoreboard page and note what it says about the Arizona Fall League - "Not Affiliated with NAPBL"

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/scoreboard/

The NAPBL is the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, which was remaned simply to "Minor League Baseball" in 1999, according to Baseball Reference.

Thanks for the head's up on Lucroy, and congratulations to him. I am curious if this has anything to do with Salome's suspension or something else we don't know about, and if the Brewers intend to fast-track Lucroy somewhat to open 2008 (both Gillespie and Errecart skipped low-A to open this past year).

I don't know much about Salome except that he was not allowed to go. We can only speculate as to the reason. I do know that Lucroy jumped at the chance to go to Hawaii this past Monday. Haven't heard any future plans the Brewers might have for him yet, but I think he keeps his bags packed just in case!

I keep thinking that too. Add that to the fact that Bouchie's overall numbers in WV were pretty awful and he hasn't really earned a promotion, and a decent showing in Hawaii could land Lucroy the starting gig in Brevard.

Here's the roster of the Honu, which includes the Brewers listed in the initial post in this thread, with the exception now of Lucroy for Salome:

http://www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/teams/roster?team=Honu

From Baseball Prospectus:

The Brewers will be hoping for a rebound from first baseman Chris Errecart, as last year's fifth-round pick out of the University of California disappointed at Brevard County with a .262/.331/.392 line. The power was a question coming in, but most everyone thought he'd at least hit for average.

The hot corner will be patrolled by another Brewer, Mat Gamel. One of the better hitters in the system, Gamel put up an impressive .300/.378/.472 line in the Florida State League, but he's playing winter ball to work on his defense after committing an embarrassing 53 errors this year.

The bullpen will be led by a pair of intriguing Brewers arms, but none more so than Omar Aguilar. The 22-year-old righty is built like a fireplug at six-foot and roughly 225 pounds, but he also sits at 93-96 mph and has touched triple digits on occasion this year. He struck out 68 this year in 58 innings, but his violent mechanics are a concern, as are the related control problems. A fifth-round pick in 2005, righty Kevin Roberts thrived in a conversion to relief this year, touching 95 mph with his fastball and showcasing a plus curve while punching out 74 in 65 1/3 frames for Brevard County.

Due to the wide variety of configurations for individual computers, Iamhawaii.com or ESPN 1420 AM is not able to respond to any calls or emails regarding streaming issues. Having trouble hearing the Stream?

How do I stream on a MAC?
Macintosh Users: Please refer to this link for options on Windows Media Streaming using Flip4Mac: www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx Please refer to your I.T. specialist on further Mac streaming questions.

What do I need to listen to the live stream?
Live streaming can run on any computer with a Windows operating system and a Windows Media Player. For Macs, see item above.

I see the player, but I don't hear anyting.
Please check the program guide. ESPN 1420 AM only streams local and game broadcasts, not ESPN syndicated shows. The program guide link can be found in the menu bar near the top of the page.

Why is the live stream cutting in and out, and the player starts rebuffering?
* During our live streaming periods, internet traffic is heavy at that moment. Rebuffering refers to the player awaiting more file packets to be received, which are slow in arriving because of internet traffic.
* Live streaming is available to ESPN 1420 AM Radio during designated time segments. Note that ESPN national programming is not streamed so you will not hear any broadcast during ESPN national shows.

I recently upgraded my browser and now the stream won't play. What can I do?
The Windows Media Player needs a browser plug-in installed in order to work correctly. If you switch browsers, or install them in the wrong order, then the live stream may stop working. It is important that you install the browser before you install the players. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

How do I install Windows Media player?
Using your browser go to the Windows Media Download site at www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download and follow the directions from there.

I already have Windows Media installed, but the player won't work. What's wrong?
You may need a newer version of Windows Media player than the one you have installed on your computer. For Windows OS, you must have version 6.4 or higher installed; for Macintosh you need version 6.3 or higher. If you don't have a recent enough version you will need to upgrade. If you use Netscape you may need to download a special plug in from Microsoft which is available under the 'Windows Media Tools and Services' drop down menu.

I listen at work and I am having trouble hearing the live streaming.
If you are behind a corporate firewall, you might have trouble using streaming media content. To overcome this problem, you will need to connect to the broadcast site from outside the firewall or ask your IT department for assistance. If you have a proxy server, you may need to change the settings in Windows Media player.

I've read all the FAQs and I still can't listen to the streaming audio.
As we are providing this service at no charge to our listeners, we are not able to provide additional support. 99% of the problems we have analyzed in the past have been because of specific configuration issues on listener PCs we have no access to or knowledge of.

Errecart gives Honu opening win

By Jason Kaneshiro

jkaneshiro@starbulletin.com

A solid finish to the regular season in Florida carried over into a strong start to the Hawaii Winter Baseball season for Chris Errecart.

The Milwaukee Brewers prospect went 3-for-5 and hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning to lead the North Shore Honu to an 8-5 win over the West Oahu Cane Fires in the HWB season opener yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

Errecart's opposite-field blast in the fourth inning cleared the 387-foot sign in right-center and banged off the scoreboard as the Honu rallied from a 5-0 deficit to claim the victory.

"I don't care where you're at, what level you're playing in, if it's a spring training game or a fall game," North Shore manager Kevin Bradshaw said, "any time you can show you can come back, the confidence helps in games to come."

Errecart's homer was the big blow in an 11-hit attack for the Honu and the bullpen protected the lead by surrendering just one hit and two walks over the final seven innings. Honu relievers Blair Johnson, Takashi Kamoshida and Charles Benoit combined to retire 16 of 17 West Oahu hitters from the third through eighth innings.

After starter Shinya Nakayama was knocked around in West Oahu's five-run second inning, Johnson settled things down and picked up the win. Benoit was credited with a two-inning save.

"You get to kind of cheat and see what they've been doing," Johnson, normally a starter in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, said of entering the game in a relief role. "It was more a matter of adjusting to the mound, and once that started happening I started locating my two-seamer down and getting ground balls."

Johnson threw just 31 2/3 innings with Lynchburg this season, missing about two months with a torn labrum, and was assigned to the league to continue his comeback.

"You don't learn when you're not on the mound, so this is just a huge learning experience," Johnson said. "Every day you go out and you get a feel for each pitch and hopefully you can take this experience into next year."

While many of the HWB players had some down time following the end of their minor league seasons, Errecart didn't have much of a break.

After playing in the Florida State League playoffs with the Brevard County Manatees, the first baseman went back to the Brewers' training facility in Arizona for more practice.

The extra work appeared to pay off yesterday when he lined two sharp singles and gave the Honu the lead with his homer.

"I ended the season pretty well there, so I think it really helped me coming in here," Errecart said. "My level of confidence is pretty high right now.

"I think I was more surprised than anyone else," he said of the homer. "I just tried to get the ball in the air and get the runner in from third base and it happened to go over."

West Oahu sent 10 batters to the plate in taking the lead with a five-run second inning. Ninth-place hitter Ryan Rogowski accounted for the first runs of the HWB season with a two-run double to left. Joshua Bell drove in two more with a double of his own.

North Shore rallied with two runs in the third inning, then struck for four in the fourth. Cale Iorg, son of former major leaguer Garth Iorg, went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

"The biggest thing was how we ran the bases," Bradshaw said. "We got some guys over to third base with less than two outs and we were able to get them in and get back in the game and then the big home run put us up."

HWB's opening weekend continues today with the Honu and CaneFires meeting again at noon (5:00 PM Central, Live Video).

"It was great," Errecart said. "It felt good to get out here again and start playing."

The fifth-round pick in 2006 out of California-Berkeley is coming off his first season playing first base at High-A Brevard County, where he batted .262 with 23 doubles, a triple and 10 home runs with 55 RBIs. But he said he needs to get in as many reps at first base.

"I always have to work on my defense playing around first base," said Errecart, who paced the Honu's 11-hit attack by batting 3 for 5. "It was my first full season there, so I've got a lot to work on."

Box score here:

Mat Gamel 0-for-2, Errecart 3-for-5, three runs, three RBI

I'm sure his main focus in Hawaii is to work on those errors, but it's still going to be fun watching him smack the ball around for a while.

Last night's 0-2 came with 2 decently hit fly outs, and so far, just one strikeout. Gamel and Errecart in the home run race... who ya got??

Mat Gamel went 3-for-4 with two 2-run home runs to drive in half of the North Shore Honu's runs in an 8-3 win over the West Oahu CaneFires in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park last night.

Gamel homered in the seventh, and then added his second homer in the eighth, helping the Honu overcome a 2-0 deficit. Jonathan Lucroy batted 2 for 2 for North Shore, which swept the two-game series.

Kevin Roberts threw two perfect innings, fanning two, to get the win for the Honu. Omar Aguilar allowed one unearned run in an inning of work, walking two.

Hawaii Winter Baseball Underway

Hawaii Winter Baseball began Saturday with the North Shore Honu against the West Oahu CaneFires and Waikiki BeacbBoys against the Honolulu Sharks.

First baseman Chris Errecart (Brewers) paced a four-run fourth inning for North Shore with a three-run homer that led to an 8-5 victory. He finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Waikiki shut out Honolulu 7-0 thanks to strong outings by seven pitchers. Righthander Yutaka Tamaki was most impressive, striking out four of the six batters he faced.

On Sunday, third baseman Mat Gamel (Brewers) launched two late home runs to help North Shore rally past Waikiki 8-3.

The other Sunday match-up was also decided by a scored of 8-3 with Honolulu beating Waikiki. Eight different Honolulu players had a hit, but Waikiki had three errors and the Sharks only needed two official RBIs to get the victory. Brandon Snyder (Orioles) had a hit and played his second game at third base, after splitting the 2007 regular season between first base and DH.

Errecart breaks wrist in Hawaii
By Shane Figueroa / Special to MLB.com

Milwaukee Brewers prospect Chris Errecart will miss the rest of the Hawaii Winter Baseball season after breaking his right wrist on Sept. 30.

Down in the count, 0-2, the North Shore first baseman was plunked by West Oahu starter Steve Johnson with two outs in the first inning of an eventual 8-3 victory for the Honu.

"I didn't think much of it at the time," said Errecart, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and scored three times in North Shore's opener. "I knew something was wrong after I couldn't remove my right batting glove, but I went back out there on defense. While tossing the infielders their practice grounders, I couldn't catch a single ball. The next thing I know, I'm leaving for X-rays."

Errecart began his career at Rookie-level Helena, batting .316 with 13 homers and 61 RBIs. This season with Class A Advanced Brevard County, he hit .262 with 10 roundtrippers, 55 RBIs, 63 runs scored and 23 doubles. He batted .360 in April and had the first four-hit game of his career on Aug. 7.

His regular-season success translated well to the postseason as the 22-year-old batted .276 and slugged two home runs and six RBIs for the Manatees, who fell to Clearwater in the League Championship Series, three games to one.

"It's always disappointing when you can't play," he said. "It's especially frustrating after a good first game and what I felt was a strong full season at High-A. I feel like I made a lot of strides defensively and offensively this season, which was my first full season as a first baseman."

Even though his second season is over, Errecart remains patient. He knows the long road back from recovery will have to wait until the removal of his cast, which won't be set until Monday.

"I have to wait a bit now, and that's the worst part," he said. "I'm not sure exactly how the rehab process will go, but I'm already looking forward to swinging the bat again."

Mat Gamel 2-for-5 (only a double and a grand slam, OPS 1.533, wow) and Jonathan Lucroy (designated hitter) now 6-for-11, .545 as North Shore wins, 7-3. Omar Aguilar a perfect 9th inning on 12 pitches. Gamel did commit his 2nd error in five games.
