Brevard scores 3 late runs to win 3-2. Good pitching, just enough hitting. Shut down on 2 singles through 6, they come up with 4 singles and 3 runs off the bullpen in the 7th. Despite pitching well in each of his 5 starts with Brevard, Brae Wright can't get a W.

Maybe greybeard Travis Wendte can now get some Power 50 love now that he hasn't given up a run in a month or so (0 er in 12 innings since his promotion to Brevard). I know he turns 25 in the winter, but all he does is produce.

Every time Matthew Cline plays for Helena, it seems he's in the middle of lots of good stuff. Wonder what would happen if they gave him some regular playing time.

Chad Robinson with a tough start for Helena this evening, but the announcer did note that his velocity bounced back this evening, sitting in the 92-93 range, as it sounded as though he hasn't been pitching this hard prior to tonight's game.

I'm sure MaasHaas will be along shortly, but meanwhile...

Nashville wins 8-3, and Huntsville scores 3 in the 9th to pull out an exciting 8-5 victory. Helena gets shutout on 3 hits, 6-0. Player of the night would probably be Alcides Escobar, 5 for 5 with a triple and 3 RBI for Huntsville. (By the way, I heard he is a cousin of Kelvim Escobar, Angels pitcher. Did we already know that?)

Manatees pitch to victory

Brae Wright and two relievers combined on a six-hitter as Brevard County beat Jupiter, 3-2, on Thursday at Space Coast Stadium.

After giving up two runs on three hits and two walks in the first inning, Wright scattered three singles while striking out three over the next five frames.

Travis Wendte (1-0) got the win with two hitless innings, and Patrick Ryan picked up his fourth save with a perfect ninth.

Brevard County (27-23) scored all three runs in the seventh. J.R. Hopf and Nestor Corredor each had an RBI single, and Lorenzo Cain pushed across the go-ahead run with an RBI groundout to reliever Jacob Marceaux.

Gaby Sanchez, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first for Jupiter (22-27).

Marceaux (2-6) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in two innings. -- Michael Echan/MLB.com

Moss Delivers in Clutch in Ninth for Stars

Steve Moss knocked in the go-ahead run in a three-run ninth inning rally that lifted the Stars to an 8-5 comeback win over West Tenn Thursday night in the middle of a five-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars won for a second time in the series to improve to 33-20 in the second half and extended their lead over Chattanooga and Tennessee to four games in the North Division, while the Diamond Jaxx fell for a ninth time in their last 13 games to drop to 20-33 in the second half and 51-72 overall. The Stars took a 10-7 advantage in the season series after scoring at least eight runs for the fifth time in their last eight games.

Ryan Crew led off the ninth with a single, moved to second base on a Carlos Corporan sacrifice bunt and stayed put when Mel Stocker drew a walk. Moss, who had been mired in a 2-for-24 slump, drilled a 3-1 fastball from Juan Sandoval off the wall in left field for a double to plate Crew to give the Stars a 6-5 edge and move Stocker to third. Alcides Escobar, who had singled in each of his first four at-bats, then tripled to center field to drive in both runners to make it 8-5. The Stars, who did not have a player collect five hits in a game all season, have now had it happen twice in the series. Luis Pena retired the side in order to nail down his 11th save in 13 chances since joining the team.

Stocker tripled with one out in the seventh to chase starter Justin Thomas from the game after he had yielded 11 hits. Sandoval took over and struck out Moss before Escobar looped a single into center field to deliver Stocker with the tying run. Stars' starter Lindsay Gulin lasted five innings in his fourth turn of the season against the Jaxx and was replaced in the sixth inning by David Johnson. The Stars inability to turn a double play on a ground ball hit by Erick Monzon proved costly, as he came into score to tie the game at four on a one-out triple by Mike Saunders, who collected his second three-bagger of the night. Brent Johnson then singled with two outs to plate Saunders to give West Tenn the lead for the first time in the game.

Escobar and Hernan Iribarren singled with one out in the first to extend their hitting streaks to nine games each and then scored on a two-out, three-run home by Brendan Katin. The Stars' right fielder moved into a tie for the league lead in long balls with 23 and pushed his league-best runs batted in total to 87. He has homered in all three games in the series and has hit seven against West Tenn.

Marshall Hubbard led off the home second with a home run, his 14th, and Jesus Merchan delivered a two-out single to score Saunders later in the inning to trim the Stars' lead to 3-2. Moss walked with two outs in the fifth, move to third on an Escobar single and scored on an infield hit by Iribarren to make it 4-2. Rene Rivera then led off the home half of the fifth with a home run, his fifth of the season and second against the Stars, to draw the Jaxx back to within a run.

The series continues Friday night, as left-hander Steve Hammond starts for Huntsville against West Tenn right-hander Joe Woerman. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Alcides Escobar is still just 20 years old, folks -- what a future; don't think for a minute that Brendan Katin doesn't have value -- K's or not, organizations covet power bats, and he's as powerful as any in the organization minus Prince and Ryan right now; Mel Stocker on base four times just two games after his 5-for-5 night -- an 0-for-4 was sandwiched between...

Final: Nashville 8, New Orleans (Mets) 3

First-Place Sounds Down Zephyrs, 8-3

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds topped the New Orleans Zephyrs by a score of 8-3 at Greer Stadium on Thursday night in front of 5,355 fans.

With the win, the Sounds (75-50) increased their division lead to 5 ½ games over Iowa, which suffered a last at-bat, 11-inning loss in Omaha.

The Sounds' magic number to clinch their third consecutive PCL American Conference Northern Division title stands at 13 entering play on Friday.

Any combination of Nashville wins and/or losses by the second-place Cubs equaling this total will result in a Sounds division title. Because Nashville won the season series against Iowa by a 9-6 margin, the Sounds win advance to the playoffs if the clubs end up tied at the conclusion of the regular season.

Nashville batters tallied 15 hits in Thursday's game, including Laynce Nix's two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Sounds began the scoring by mounting a three-run rally in the bottom of the third beginning with an Andy Abad (2-for-4) single up the middle. Two batters later, Vinny Rottino drew a walk before Chris Barnwell's liner into left loaded the bases for the pitcher. Mark DiFelice drew a four-pitch walk from Z's starter Adam Bostick for his first RBI of the season. Tony Gwynn extended his hit streak to a season-high eight games two batters later with a broken-bat infield single that scored Rottino before Drew Anderson's second single of the game plated Barnwell to give the Sounds a 3-0 advantage. Anderson finished 3-for-5 in the contest.

New Orleans (65-60) reduced the deficit in the top of the fourth inning. Fernando Tatis started off by sending a hard-hit ball to deep left field for a double before Ricky Ledee (2-for-4) followed with another double to the right side, scoring Tatis. First baseman Andy Tracy moved Ledee to third on an infield single before Chip Ambres plated him with an RBI single to left, making the score to 3-2. DiFelice worked his way out of the two-men-on, one-out jam by striking out the next two batters in order.

The Sounds added another three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth that once again began when Abad reached base, this time on a double to center. Nix followed with his 18th homer of the year and his third in three games. Vinny Rottino was the next batter and he drew a four-pitch walk before stealing his 14th base of the season. He would score the final run of the inning after Tatis made an errant throw on a Chris Barnwell ground ball to put Nashville up 6-2.

AUDIO: Nix Homers For 3rd Straight Game

The Zephyrs tapped reliever Tim Dillard for one run in the top of the sixth thanks to two singles and a double. Despite giving up the run, all three New Orleans outs in the inning were the result of a strikeout by Dillard.

Anderson and second baseman Callix Crabbe (3-for-5) both got their third hits of the night in the bottom of the eighth inning, during which the Sounds added two to their lead. It was Anderson's fifth three-hit game of the season and Crabbe's team leading eighth three-hit game. Crabbe currently leads the time with 33 multi-hit games in 2007.

DiFelice (3-1) got the win for Nashville by giving up only two runs through five innings while striking out eight. Reliever Greg Aquino earned his fourth save of the season by throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three.

Bostick (5-6) took the loss by giving up five earned runs in five innings and striking out three.

The Sounds wrap up their regular-season schedule against the Zephyrs on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Current PCL Pitcher-of-the-Week Seth McClung (1-0, 0.00) will take the hill for the Sounds and will face New Orleans right-hander Philip Humber (10-8, 4.43).

A fireworks show, presented by Your Select Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealers, will follow the on-field action.

Sounds down Zephyrs as Nix homers again

By JEFF LOCKRIDGE

Tennessean Staff Writer

The onset of fall semester marks the return of college kids to Greer Stadium for the beer specials on Thirsty Thursdays.

Laynce Nix gave them something to toast.

Again.

Nix homered for the third consecutive game and the Sounds stacked up 15 hits in an 8-3 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs before an announced crowd of 5,355 on a muggy Thursday night.

The finale of an eight-game Sounds' homestand is at 7 tonight.

Nix joined Brad Nelson and Joe Dillon as Sounds to homer in three straight contests this season when he laced an Adam Bostick offering over center field in the fifth inning to put Nashville up 5-2.

Nix's 18th home run aided the cause of Sounds starter Mark DiFelice (3-1), who struck out eight without a walk over five innings to get the win.

Aside from a shaky fourth in which DiFelice allowed two runs on four consecutive hits, the 30-year-old right-hander was sharp against his old team. He pitched for the Zephyrs in 2005 and appeared in 14 games.

The Sounds jumped on Bostick (5-6) in the second inning. A four-pitch, bases-loaded walk to DiFelice forced in Andy Abad. Tony Gwynn drove in a run on a broken-bat infield single and Drew Anderson ripped an RBI single.

Nix followed Abad's double in the fifth with his two-run shot off Bostick. Vinny Rottino walked, stole second and scored on the first of two throwing errors by third baseman Fernando Tatis.

Anderson and Nelson added RBI singles in the eighth.

Sounds relievers Tim Dillard, Mitch Stetter and Greg Aquino combined to work the final four innings and allowed one run.

Sounds-Zephyrs could meet in playoffs

By JEFF LOCKRIDGE

Tennessean Staff Writer

This goodbye could be temporary.

The Sounds and New Orleans Zephyrs meet for the 16th and final time of the regular season at 7 tonight at Greer Stadium.

But a playoff reunion is in the works.

Nashville and New Orleans lead their respective divisions and would square off in the best-of-five PCL American Conference finals if the season ended today. If the Sounds reach the playoffs, they will host Games 3-5 of the conference finals on Sept. 7-9.

The Sounds lead the season series 8-7.

Toasty Thursday: The temperature was 101 degrees when the first pitch was thrown at 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the Sounds' scoreboard. Several weather Web sites had the temperature at 98 in downtown Nashville.

Extended summer: Sounds pitchers Mitch Stetter and Tim Dillard will participate in the Arizona Fall League as members of the Mesa Solar Sox.

It will be Stetter's third appearance in the fall league and Dillard's first.

Sounds trainer Jeff Paxson will serve in the same capacity for an unspecified team in the Hawaiian Winter League.

Batting second: Tony Gwynn Jr. returned to the Sounds' starting lineup Thursday for the first time since Aug. 4 and extended his season-best hit streak to eight games with an infield single in the second inning.

He finished 1-for-5 with a strikeout.

Gwynn, who was 1-for-2 in a reserve role Wednesday, missed time due to an injured hamstring.

Final: Orem (Angels) 6, Helena 0

Helena Site Game Summary:

Owlz Blank Brewers in Series Opener

HELENA - After winning six of the last seven games on the road the Helena Brewers lost the series opener to the Orem Owlz in their return home to Kindrick Field. Orem scored four runs in the third inning and added two more runs later in the game, but needed just one run to defeat Helena 6-0.

Brewer starter Chad Robinson tossed 2.2 innings and surrendered all four runs in the third inning. Owlz batter Jeremy Moore provided the big hit of the inning on a three-run home run to left-center field.

Lee Haydel reached on a throwing error and Matt Cline had a bunt single to start the fourth inning, but a line out double play got Haydel at second base and thwarted hopes of a Helena rally.

Pitcher Craig Langille threw 1.1 innings of relief after Robinson's exit, and stranded the bases loaded upon entering the game. Reliever Dan Merklinger followed Langille's effort. Merklinger went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits; both runs came in the eighth inning. Brock Kjeldgaard rounded out the Brewer pitching effort on the night by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

For Orem starter Robert Fish threw six shutout innings and allowed just one hit -- Cline's bunt. Vladimir Veras finished the game for the Owlz. Veras gave up one hit in two innings of work. Closer Jordon Towns allowed a ninth-inning single to Haydel, but the Brewers failed to mount any further threat to lose 6-0.

The Brewers collected just three hits on the evening and fall to an even 13-13 record at home this season.

Helena (34-21, 8-9) will try to bounce back 7:05 PM on Friday (8:05 Central) when the Brewers play host again to the Orem Owlz (26-29, 9-8).

Helena Box Score:

Chad Robinson walks seven? Ouch, that's an ugly line -- he's really struggled, but injury issues have contributed, read below; many of the regulars sat this one out, and unfortunately, it shows...

Coming off a 6-1 road trip, Brewers blanked by Owlz

By JEFF WINDMUELLER, Helena Independent Record Sports Writer

With smoke still lingering in the atmosphere and a cold, pestering rain blowing into Kindrick Legion Field, Thursday just didn't seem like it would be a good night for baseball.

For diehard Brewers fans, it wasn't.

Helena (8-9) had three hits to match its three errors as it suffered a 6-0 loss against the Orem Owlz (9-8).

Perhaps the Brewers were simply burned out after going 6-1 on a road trip through the Pioneer League's Southern Division, only to arrive home at 7 a.m. the day of the game.

Brewers manager Jeff Isom didn't think so.

"That's inexcusable," Isom said of the performance. "They actually had a longer bus trip then we did, so that's no excuse at all. We just didn't come ready to play, we were flat and we just need to come out and swing the bat like we can."

Both teams started out with double plays in the first inning, but Helena found it would have much more trouble just getting on the bags. It took until the fourth inning for them to finally reach the top of the lineup again.

Orem pitcher Robert Fish held a no-hitter until Matt Cline bunted on in the fourth and would finish six innings with five strike outs and just the one hit.

The Owlz, meanwhile, took advantage of Chad Robinson's difficulty on the mound. He had seven walks in the first three innings, and, after walking Julio Perez in the third, gave up a three-run homer to Jeremy Moore that sailed over the centerfield wall.

The Brewers let the pitcher returning from injury try to close out the inning, but after forcing a pop-out he gave up a walk, a hit and two more walks - the final scoring a run - and was pulled. Craig Langille replaced him on the mound.

"I saw some positives in Robinson," Isom said. "I saw a good fastball. The guy's coming off an injury and its a nice thing to see him coming out there.

"I actually saw some pretty good pitching. I saw (Dan) Merklinger get out of an inning when he possibly could've been in more trouble and give up some more runs, but he didn't."

Robinson struck out four in his stay on the mound, giving up four hits and four runs.

Merklinger came in the fifth and had a strong performance until Hector Estrella cracked a double in the eighth to score Andrew Romine, who got on with a perfect bunt.

The Brewers' offense looked like it might have a chance to catch up a little bit in the fourth, but with runners at first and second Kurt Crowell struck a frozen rope that Romine made a diving catch to stop. Lee Haydel was halfway to third when the catch was made, but Romine at shortstop rolled backwards and lobbed to Kennedy at second base for the double play.

Back-to-back errors allowed Estrella to score the last run of the game. Merklinger forced a pop-out then struck out Ryan Kennedy to get out of the jam.

Brock Kjeldgaard closed in the ninth, giving up a hit while striking out one. Langille saw just eight batters, giving up a double and walking one.

Along with Haydel and Cline, Anthony Wycklendt was the only other Brewer to register a hit.

Moore went 2-for-5 with four RBI to lead the Owlz. Estrella went 3-4 with a run and an RBI.

Helena, Missoula and Billings are in a three-way tie for second place in the Northern Division. Great Falls is on top with a 12-5 record.

Drew Anderson has quietly been having a real nice stretch.

And how about the job Stan Kyles is doing with the AAA vet pitchers like DiFelice, Pettyjohn, and Dickey, and earlier Oxspring?

Wonder what he could do with the struggling staff in Milwaukee.

Kyles did a nice job with Grant Balfour too.......I guess he forgot everything he was taught when he got to the majors.

In 5.1 innings.

I thought DFAing Grant was a desperate move but I'm not blaming Maddux for his 2.2 poor innings in Milwaukee.
