Power on cruise control?

Team won't take it easy with favorable remaining schedule

Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter

A glance at the West Virginia Power schedule reveals a favorable final stretch for the Class A club as it wraps up the first half of the South Atlantic League schedule.

West Virginia (38-16) has 14 games (seven at home and seven on the road) remaining in the first half, and all but two of those are against teams with losing records.

First up is a two-game home stand against second-place Greensboro (31-26) at Appalachian Power Park. The first game is set for tonight; the second game is set for Wednesday morning.

The second-place Grasshoppers trail the Power by 8 1/2 games in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division standings.

Next is a pair of road series -- a four-game series against fifth-place Lexington (26-31) and a three-game set against eighth-place Hickory (22-32).

No worries there, though. The Power has a 20-6 record and .319 batting average in road games compared to an 18-10 record and .281 batting average in home games.

The first half concludes with a five-game homestand against fourth-place Lake County (27-29).

It seems the schedule is tailor-made for West Virginia to put it into cruise control during the stretch run en route to the first-half divisional title.

Just don't suggest such a scenario to Power Manager Mike Guerrero, who refuses to allow himself or his players to think like that.

"I'm not looking at the schedule," said Guerrero, whose team ranks first in the 16-team league in hitting with a .301 batting average and eighth in pitching with a 4.33 earned run average. "Neither are my kids.

"You still have to go out there and prove yourself everyday. It's a day-by-day thing. What happened yesterday, it doesn't matter. What happens tomorrow, it doesn't matter. Just worry about today and take care of today. That's all we can do. That's all that counts.

"The main thing about these guys, they are prepared everyday and they take one game at a time."

The Power has won 10 of its 14 series this season. It lost one, split three and swept four.

West Virginia has had winning streaks of 14, two, two, three, three, two and seven games compared to losing streaks of two, two, three and two.

"We do everything like a team," Guerrero said. "The chemistry is pretty good."

"We all pull for each other and pick each other up," center fielder Darren Ford added. "Everybody is in it for the team. Nobody is in it for himself.

"We're like brothers on this team."

***

THE South Atlantic League All-Star Game is set for June 19 at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga.

Mike Guerrero on Monday confirmed that he has been chosen to manage the Northern Division squad.

"It's a big honor for me," said Guerrero, who attributed his selection to his team's success. "It shows all of the work that we have done up until this point in the season."

Guerrero also said he expected Power hitting coach Corey Hart to join him on the All-Star staff.

He also said he didn't know how many of his players will make the trip with him, although he had heard Ford, left-handed starting pitcher Zach Braddock and right-handed starting pitcher Mike McClendon were among the selections.

SAL President John Henry Moss said the league plans to announce the All-Star Game rosters today.

Chris Oxspring with 8 strikeouts in 4 innings so far...that gives him more strikeouts than innings pitched, and about a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. He is 30, so not exactly a prospect, but he is putting up some decent numbers.

Just turned 30-year-old RHP Chris Oxspring with a Gallardo-like performane thus far. Krikey, the mate's been so good this season, it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that he's looking at a 40-man roster spot with a possible September callup.

Oxspring Extends Scoreless Streak In 5-0 Win

NASHVILLE ? Chris Oxspring stretched his scoreless innings streak to 16 with six shutout frames for Nashville on Tuesday afternoon at Greer Stadium to lead the Sounds to a 5-0 victory over the Tucson Sidewinders in the finale of a four-game series and eight-game homestand.

The win was the sixth in the last seven games for Nashville (32-26), which recorded its sixth winning home series in eight tries.

Oxspring (5-3), who won his third consecutive start, combined with three relievers on a four-hit shutout, the Sounds? third of the season.

The Nashville right-hander, who lowered his ERA to 2.60 with his fourth quality start, limited the Sidewinders to two hits while fanning eight batters over his six innings of work. The Australian moved into second among Pacific Coast League hurlers with 64 strikeouts on the year, trailing league-leading teammate Yovani Gallardo?s 95 K?s by a wide margin.

Brad Nelson gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out solo homer to right-center on the first pitch he saw from Tucson starter D.J. Carrasco. The blast was his seventh of the year.

Nashville doubled the lead in the fourth when Chris Barnwell led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a Joe Dillon flyout, and scored on a Carrasco wild pitch.

The Sounds? lead increased to 3-0 in the fifth when Jose Macias plated Vinny Rottino with a squeeze bunt. Rottino had walked to open the frame and moved to third on a Charles Thomas double.

Nashville added a pair of runs in the sixth against Carrasco on a Mike Rivera RBI single and a Rottino sacrifice fly, bringing the score to its final 5-0.

Rottino singled in the second inning for Nashville to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games, the Sounds? second double-digit streak of the campaign (Andy Abad, 12).

Carrasco (2-5) took the loss for Tucson after allowing five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of action.

After joining the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day Wednesday, the Sounds travel to Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday to begin an eight-game intra-division road trip that includes a pair of four-game series against the Royals and Memphis Redbirds.

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (8-1, 2.14) will take the mound for Nashville in Thursday?s 7:05 p.m. CT series opener in Omaha to face former Sound Ben Hendrickson (5-3, 5.01).

Nashville Box Score:

You would definitely think an astute GM would be contacting Doug Melvin about Chris Oxspring -- great numbers in a hitters' league, blocked on first call-up by Yovani, major league experience, he should have value around baseball...

You know a guy is special when a quality start and a better than 1 K/IP causes everyone checking the box score to be just a tad disappointed--regardless of how ridiculous he knows it is. I'm guilty. I haven't been listening to the 'Tees broadcast, but I'm guessing he's been leaving some pitches up in the zone tonight with that 1:9 GB:FB.

Another ho-hum night for Lou Palmisano... I have to admit I've been secretly hanging on the Sollmann/Youkilis comp someone made a few weeks ago, but Lou has the higher OBP (.463 to .454 before tonights game).

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER SURGE LATE TO DEFEAT GREENSBORO

Down five runs with two outs in the seventh inning of Tuesday night?s game at Appalachian Power Park, the West Virginia Power scored five runs to tie the game, and capped their comeback with two runs in the eighth inning as they defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-6.

Jake Blackwood had a monster game for Greensboro, driving in all six of their runs. He knocked in the first two on a triple in the first inning, and then hit his first of two, two-run homers in the third. Blackwood did his final bit of damage in the seventh inning with his second two-run bomb of the night.

West Virginia scored their first run on Andy Bouchie?s solo home run in the fifth inning. Kenny Holmberg started West Virginia?s two-out rally in the seventh inning with a base hit and scored on Taylor Green?s double. Green touched home plate on Darren Ford?s triple and Ford scored on Daniel Garcia?s throwing error. Andrew Lefave capped off the big inning with a game tying two-run single.

Taylor Green came through again for the Power in the eighth inning, providing West Virginia with the lead on an RBI double, his third hit of the game. One batter later, Darren Ford provided some insurance with a run-scoring single.

Jose Romero (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning to get the win, E.J. Shanks (9) got the save and Don Dzyz (1-2) was tagged with the loss.

The Power improved to 39-16 with the win and the Grasshoppers fell to 31-27 with the loss. All nine in the Power starting lineup reached safely. Taylor Green has nine hits in his last three games. West Virginia now has a nine and a half game lead with 13 games to play in the first half.

The Power will finish the four game series against Greensboro Wednesday morning. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (3-3, 7.04) and the Grasshoppers will counter with right hander Hector Correa (0-1, 2.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM (9:35 Central).

Katin starting to heat up..... I think he is a underrated...

He might be a tad bit older than the former prospects, but if he keeps this up, it's quite possible his numbers surpass those of Fielder, Weeks, and Hart in Huntsville

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 10, Huntsville 6

Six-Run Seventh Sinks Stars

Caonabo Cosme delivered a tie-breaking, two-run double in a six-run seventh inning rally that lifted Chattanooga to a 10-6 come-from-behind win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the fourth of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Lookouts won for a second time in the series to improve to 26-33 on the season, while the Stars dropped to 31-26 and will wait the outcome of the game between Tennesse and Birmingham, which at last check was in the 13th inning, with Birmingham on top 7-5, to see if they still have a share of the lead in the North Division. (We'll let you know if Birmingham hangs on, which will help out the Stars.)

Trailing 3-1 going into the seventh, the Stars got a leadoff double by Brendan Katin and he stayed put as the next two hitters were retired. Ryan Crew then delivered a pinch-hit single, his first hit at the double-A level, to right, to plate Katin to cut the home team?s lead to one. Hernan Iribarren reached when Enrique Cruz couldn?t handle his ground ball at third base and Crew then dashed home and scored to tie the game on an infield single by Mel Stocker, who knocked in his 15th run of the year. Steve Sollmann laced a single to left that chased home Iribarren to give the visitors their first lead of the night but it would not last for very long.

Robert Hinton took over on the hill for Jeff Housman, who worked out of trouble and pitched a scoreless sixth, and promptly walked leadoff man Enrique Cruz and gave up a single to Cody Strait. The runners moved up on a Ryan Hanigan sacrifice bunt and Tyrell Godwin was intentionally passed to load the bases for Marland Williams but the strategy was foiled when Hinton?s first pitch plunked him in the back to force in Cruz with the tying run. Cosme then stepped up and delivered the Lookouts? third game-winning double in their last five contests, as Strait and Godwin scored to make it 6-4. Luis Bolivar, Paul Janish and Cruz all singled home runs to finish off the second six-run inning allowed by Huntsville this season.

Janish doubled with one out in the first and came in to score on a two-out single by Hanigan to give the home team the early 1-0 lead. Chattanooga has scored in the first inning in three of the four games in the series and Stars? starter Steve Hammond has now been scored on in the first inning in seven of his 12 starts, including four out of six on the road. The Lookouts added a run in the third on a run-scoring single by Cruz, the former Stars? shortstop, and another in the fourth on a home run by Williams, his second of the series. Hammond has allowed a long ball in eight starts, including in six of his last seven.starts and a league-worst 11 on the season.

Katin hit a home run in the eighth inning and singled home a run in the ninth and wound up finishing a triple shy of hitting for the cycle for the Stars, who collected 12 hits in a game for a third time in the series. Stocker picked four singles in five at-bats, and scored twice, and became the fifth Stars player to have a four-hit game this year.

The series concludes Wednesday afternoon when the Stars will send southpaw Lindsay Gulin to the hill against Lookouts? left-hander Luke Lockwood. Coverage of the game begins at 11:00 a.m. central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score:

Four singles for speedster Mel Stocker; Steve Hammond with nine baserunners allowed in his five innings, not a real "turn around his season" outing...

It would be really nice for Huntsville and BC to go on extended winning streaks here and put post season trips in the bag.
