Cubs-Cardinals series: who do you root for?

SeriesFinale
We need to win to night, a lose by the Cubs, and hope for a split 2-2 in the Cub series. Then if we take 2 of 3 from the Reds we would be 3 games up on the Cubs and 5 games up on the Cards.

This all seems possible to me and would be a great lift for us heading out west.

I like this idea.

Just can't stand the Cubs. So I go for 3 out of 4 or a sweep by the Redbirds. At least my wife (and her family) would be happy (they are from St. Louis, and all cardinals fans). If the Cubs win the division, then the whole household is sad.

Plus, if the Cards stay in the race, they earn some respect, given what they had to deal with (losing there whole starting rotation from last year, with their ace out the whole year, a "slumping" Pujols -- and I will purposely ignore the Josh Hancock issue, as that should not be a rallying point). As much as LaRussa is disliked by many, I actually respect the man as a manager for nothing else than he (like guys like Cox, Torre, Leyland) have succeeded over many years, and a couple of eras (even if their teams have the resources to help them)

Anyway, having said all that --- GO BREW CREW. Let's get some wins, then we don't have to worry about who else wins or loses!

If I thought there was any chance that the boorish part of cub nation would somehow become less obnoxious after cub postseason success (i.e. winning the WS), I'd consider rooting for the cubs. However, I don't think anything will cure the obnoxiousness. Also, the thought of the cubs winning during a year that for so long has held such promise for the Brewers...is too painful for me to contemplate. Geno's point made a few weeks ago about this being a rare winnable season has stuck in my mind ever since he made the post. Had the cubs succeeded in, say, 2002, I might have been more sanguine.

Having said all this, the last two nights have plainly shown me that my STL hatred has really not subsided.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

St. Louis has been annoying me more and more the last few years...some of their fans have gotten increasingly obnoxious at MP (all I've got is anecdotal evidence!), the whole "Best fans in baseball" self-congratulation made me gag, Pujols and Rolen are unlikeable (I'm one of the few who actually likes TLR) and don't get me started on their DUI issues...or Andujar and '82, of course.

The enemy of your enemy isn't always your friend, but I guess they will do.

I have hated the Cubs ever since I started following baseball in the early 1980's. I do mean hated. I would root against the Cubs if they played a pick up game against team of pedophiles, that is how much I hate the Cubs. Listening to Cub fans and that flesh bag Ron Santo in the playoffs would be unbearable so Go Cardinals.

I bought a Marlins hat to wear around after the whole Cub meltdown just so annoying Cub fans wouldn't come up to me and act like I should be disappointed for the Cubs. Only a cub fan would be obnoxious enough to just assume everyone roots for the loveable losers when in fact a good portion of the population hates the cubs with a passion.

Nice. I laughed a couple times off that one. Well done.

I'm wondering if this Sunday rainout will affect us down the road...save for next Monday (and even that might run afoul of union rules), I don't believe there's a reasonable time for the teams to make this up before the end of the year, and I assume it will only be done if there are playoff implications. I'd like to hope that if there are playoff implications, the Brewers would be part of them, but how nerve-wracking would it be to sit and hope one of these teams lose in a makeup game to avoid having a one-game playoff? On the other hand, rooting for a team to win so we can get into a one-game playoff would be nerve-wracking but exciting.

  • 2 weeks later...
If the Cards are gonna win the division, they will really to have earn it during this last stretch...on the road against Arizona and the Crew (although we know how that went last time) plus a makeup game in New York against the Mets during the last week, and home against Philly, plus five against the Cubs (one in Wrigley). Toughest schedule of the three teams, I think, but I really hope they can and will take at least four of five from Chicago. That would be huge for the Crew's chances.

Living in Illinois, I definitely want the Cardinals over the Cubs. Ugh, I couldn't stand 2003, and this year it would be even worse with the comeback and "It's [not] Gonna' Happen" slogan.

I really hope the Cardinals can take 4/5 from those games, but I'm expecting a split series coming down to that last game, making all of those games virtually pointless.

I'm nervous right now about the Brewers, I can't even imagine what it's going to be like in that last week with that tough stretch. Whew...
