Now who am I going to complain about? http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/frown.gif

I don't expect to see Gross that much either so it doesn't make too much of a difference to me. Better by subtraction I guess. I would of rather brought up Gwynn since we could use him without getting him ABs.

Now let the storm begin. http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/pimp.gif

I think Gross needs to take the AB's that Mench has been getting against RHP's lately, and probably start stealing some of Hall's AB's against righties. And he needs to hit in the top two of the lineup when he does play.

I don't mind the move, but I don't see our bullpen improving because of this either, and pitching is what worries me right now..

This was my exact reaction. This doesn't make Villy less tired or going to make Wise pitch better, or our starters pitch deeper in games, plus with Parra and/or Yo getting shut down, Spurling could be needed. That said, a 13 man pitching staff is pretty silly.

Gwynn was on the DL for his hamstring the last time I knew.

Agreed. We're missing high OBP players and Gross can help us there.

I was not aware of this. Disregard that. ;-) But yea, if he was healthy then I'd rather have him.

What is Ned going to do with one less pitcher?
what difference will it make when the starter and the first reliever out of the pen put the game out of reach?

I kid, sort of.

My prediction for next whipping boy: Bullpen catcher Marcus Hanel
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Really don't understand the move now. Spurling just didn't suddenly become bad, he was always bad.

Fielder is suspended soon and Graffanino is hurt. They'll need someone to play 1st base(well), plain and simple. Hart maybe could play a game or 2 sure, but having that lefty bat is important.

Don't get all the Spurling hate here. I'm not claiming he was a great pitcher, but every team needs a guy who can come in and suck up innings when you're already out of the game. Spurling was that guy. I guess Wise will take up that mantle now.

At least people can stop calling for Gross to come up now. Hopefully he'll come out hot from the gates and help this anemic offense score some runs.

"Really don't understand the move now...he was always bad."

So because he should have been let go months ago, they shouldn't now?

Spurling since All Star break: 12 2/3 IP, 20 Hits, 15 Runs (not counting inherited runners scoring), 12 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 7K, 8.53 ERA. The only recent game he did pitch a scoreless inning vs. the Astros, he allowed a walk, a hit, and a 420 foot out to Jason Lane, a .170 hitter.

As for Yost being handicapped by "just" 12 pitchers, come on. Parra will probably go into the rotation, and Capuano will go to the pen. Having Capuano in the pen who's innings aren't so closely monitored and who can go multiple innings relieves the pressure more than having a guy(Spurling) who just adds gas to the fire.

At the very least now when a lefthanded bat is needed to hit late in a one run game, we won't see Craig Counsell trot to the plate.
