Jackson, Sounds Take Down Royals, 8-2

OMAHA ? One night after being held to four hits by Omaha, the Nashville offense rebounded with 15 knocks and Zach Jackson worked eight solid innings in the Sounds? 8-2 victory over the division-rival Royals on Friday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium.

With the win, Nashville (34-27) snapped a six-game losing streak against Omaha that dated back to last season. The Sounds have won seven of their last nine games.

Jackson (7-3) notched his second consecutive winning start by holding the Royals to two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four over his eight frames of action. With his seventh win, the left-hander pulled within one victory of teammate Yovani Gallardo (eight) for the Pacific Coast League lead.

Nashville?s 15 hits on the evening, including three homers, were one shy of the club?s best effort this season. Callix Crabbe and Ozzie Chavez paced the Sounds with three hits apiece.

The Sounds stormed out to a 5-0 lead against Tyler Lumsden with five runs in the top of the third inning. Nashville opened the frame with four consecutive hits: a Jose Macias double, a Chavez single, an RBI single by Crabbe, and a run-scoring double off the bat of Chris Barnwell. After Lumsden retired the next two batters, catcher Mike Rivera belted his tenth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right, to increase the lead to five.

Nashville plated two more scores with a two-out rally against Lumsden in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0. After the first two batters were retired, Chavez ripped his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left. Crabbe followed with a double and came around to score the frame?s second run one batter later on Barnwell?s second RBI knock of the evening, a single to left.

Lumsden (5-4) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on nine hits over four innings of action.

Sounds third baseman Joe Dillon greeted Omaha reliever Nate Hoelscher with a solo homer to left to lead off the fifth inning. It was the veteran?s eighth longball of the season and upped the Nashville advantage to 8-0.

Jackson held the Omaha offense in check through the first seven innings, allowing only two hits and only one run to reach second, before the Royals broke up his shutout bid with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth stemming from a fielding error by Nashville right fielder Jose Macias. The gaff snapped a season-best six-game errorless streak for the Sounds.

Grant Balfour took over on the Nashville hill in the ninth and worked a scoreless inning to close out the victory, his eighth consecutive scoreless appearance (11.0 IP).

The teams meet again in a 7:05 p.m. contest on Saturday evening. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (0-1, 5.40) is scheduled to make his second start of the season for Nashville. The Royals will counter with right-hander Billy Buckner (4-1, 4.18).

Nashville Box Score:

Ten home runs for Mike Rivera? That total snuck up on us, huh?

Stars Survive Late Rally and Down DJaxx

Manny Parra worked seven overpowering shutout frames and Huntsville had to hold off another late rally to slip past West Tenn 7-5 Friday night in the second of a five-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars improved to 33-27 and maintained their share of the lead in the North Division, as Tennessee downed Carolina in extra innings, while the Diamond Jaxx suffered their seventh loss in the last nine games to fall to 27-35. Huntsville has scored at least five runs and collected nine hits in six of the seven games on the road trip in winning four out of seven, so far.

Parra allowed only one hit, an infield single by Matt Tuiasospopo, walked three and fanned eight to earn his seventh win of the season, good for a three-way tie for second best in the league. He set down the last eleven batters he faced after the Tuiasosopo singled and was followed by Robert Hinton, who had given up six runs in his last appearance in suffering the loss on Tuesday at Chattanooga. Luis Valbuena led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Brent Johnson, who scored along with Prentice Redman, who walked, on a two-out double by Marshall Hubbard that cut the lead to 7-3. Tuiasospop doubled home Hubbard to make it 7-4 and knock Hinton out of the game. Mark DiFelice took over and yielded a single to Jeff Frazier that plated Tuiasosopo to slice the lead to 7-5 before Rene Rivera singled and Valbuena flied out to end the inning. Marino Salas retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his 13th save in 13 tries and preserve the Stars fifth win in seven tries against West Tenn.

Diamond Jaxx starter Andy Baldwin retired the side in order in the first inning before Brendan Katin opened the second with a home run to straightaway center field, his 10th of the year and second on the road trip, to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. Adam Heether singled to lead off the third, moved to second base on a Mel Stocker single and both scored when Steve Sollmann delivered a two-out triple, his first of the year, to right-center field. Hernan Iribarren tripled in Stocker and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 5-0 Huntsville. Baldwin was taken out after six innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out a season-high nine. He suffered his sixth loss of the season and his first at home in six turns.

Huntsville tacked on two runs in the seventh on a run-scoring double by Lou Palmisano and a two-out, bases loaded single by Adam Heether but ran themselves out of more when Steve Moss rounded second and headed toward third without realizing Palmisano was being held. The two ended up in a run down that terminated with Palmisano getting thrown out at the plate by the second baseman Valbuena.

The series continues Saturday night when the Stars will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Diamond Jaxx?s southpaw Robert Rohrbaugh. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

PCL: Royals make barely a sound against Nashville

BY ROB WHITE

OMAHA WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Zach Jackson didn't let the biggest Omaha Royals crowd of the season have any fun.

Nashville's Jackson concentrated on staying taller in his delivery, putting his pitches on a better plane and giving him more leverage. "He kept our hitters off stride," Omaha manager Mike Jirschele said.

"That's my job," the Nashville left-hander said.

Jackson took a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning and was the clear winner in an intriguing pitching matchup with Omaha's Tyler Lumsden as the Sounds won 8-2 on Friday night before a paid crowd of 13,698 on National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Night.

"We really didn't hit the ball too hard all night," Omaha manager Mike Jirschele said.

Of the four hits the Royals got off Jackson, two were infield singles and another was an opposite-field bloop double. That hit, by Jorge Padilla, demonstrated just how much Jackson had dominated since it got the crowd rocking. But by then Nashville had built an 8-0 lead.

"If they're quiet, that means the visiting team is doing well," Nashville manager Frank Kremblas said. "So that's good."

Paul Phillips followed Padilla with a clean single - the only solid base hit for Omaha all night - and two runs scored when Nashville right fielder Jose Macias misplayed Jace Brewer's sacrifice fly into an error. Brewer was promptly thrown out at third on the play, and Jackson avoided any further damage.

The strange finish didn't take the shine off Jackson's outing. Jackson (7-3) allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits in eight innings, with no walks and four strikeouts.

"You always want to go out and finish strong, especially when you've got zeroes going up into the eighth," Jackson said. "But it's definitely not going to take away from what I was able to accomplish. You've just got to look at the big picture."

Jackson led all minor leaguers with 16 victories in 2005. After opening this season 5-2 with a 3.61 ERA, including a May 7 one-hit complete game win over Round Rock, he went four starts without a win. Now he has won two straight.

"That's the best I've felt locating the fastball in a couple of years," he said. "And that's big for me, because I'm a location, pitch-to-contact guy. I was getting them to hit my pitch and let the defense play behind me."

A shin injury to infielder Mike Aviles didn't help the cause of the Omaha offense. Aviles, possibly heading for his first big league promotion according to a published report, missed his second straight game.

A low-scoring game appeared in the forecast, because Jackson and fellow left-hander Lumsden are strikingly similar.

Jackson was the 32nd overall pick in the 2004 draft, while Lumsden went No. 34. (For the curious, Kansas City selected former Omaha lefty J.P. Howell No. 31 that year).

Jackson brought a 6-3 record into the game, while Lumsden was 5-3. Jackson's ERA was 5.07, Lumsden's 5.17. Jackson turned 24 on May 13, four days after Lumsden had.

But Jackson didn't know anything about that. He was more interested in staying taller in his delivery, which puts his pitches on a better plane and gives him more leverage.

"He kept our hitters off stride, ran the ball inside on our hands quite a few times and located the ball real well," said Jirschele, whose team scored five runs in five innings against Jackson in an April 26 win. "That's the best I've seen him throw."

Lumsden had been 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in his previous six starts before regressing, giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings.

Mike Rivera's two-run homer capped a five-run third, Ozzie Chavez homered in a two-run fourth, and then Joe Dillon greeted reliever Nate Hoelscher with a homer to lead off the fifth.

"It was just one of those nights where he didn't locate the ball," Jirschele said of Lumsden. "He started working from behind and got some balls up."

West Virginia stages late seven-run rally

BULLPEN SPOILS STELLAR OUTING BY TRINIDAD

By Mark Maloney

MMALONEY@HERALD-LEADER.COM

Another exhibit demonstrating why the West Virginia Power is a first-half divisional champion.

And why the Lexington Legends are mired in sixth place, 16 1/2 games back.

West Virginia rallied from a 7-1 deficit, scoring three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth, to pull out an 8-7 victory last night at Applebee's Park.

The game marked the fourth time this season that the Legends have lost after taking a lead into the ninth.

The Legends wasted another sharp effort by pitcher Polin Trinidad, a grand slam by Koby Clemens and a four-hit game by Jimmy Van Ostrand.

Chuckie Caufield's three-run double off of Ryan Owens (0-1) tied it in the ninth.

Caufield, who finished 3-for-4, including a run-scoring hit in the first, scored the winning run from third on John Alonso's dribbler down the third-base line.

"We try to stay within ourselves and just keep fighting," said Caufield, the reigning South Atlantic League Offensive Player of the Week. "That's one thing we always talk about, is not giving up. It's not over until that last out."

Trinidad was locked up in a pitchers' duel with West Virginia's Roque Mercedes through five innings.

The Power tallied a run in the first. Trinidad, who worked seven innings of one-run ball, then retired 11 batters in a row and faced the minimum 15 batters over a five-inning stretch.

The Legends, held to three hits through five innings, scored six in the sixth.

Chris Johnson's bases-loaded single up the middle drove in two.

After reloading the bases, the Legends took a 6-1 lead on Clemens' slam to center field, his sixth homer of the season.

Both Johnson and Clemens worked the counts full.

"I was just looking for something to hit hard," Clemens said. "A couple of pitches that I fouled off were good pitches, and he finally left that slider up. I just stayed right through it and on it, and it carried out of here in that (12 mph) jet stream. I was happy to have that."

An inning later, the Legends made it 7-1 when Eric Taylor drew a bases-loaded walk.

Brent Brewer stoked the Power rally with a two-run homer off of Chad Wagler in the eighth, and Alonso added an RBI-double.

West Virginia won its fifth in a row and 11th in 12 games.

Bad pitching by Lexington or just more great hitting from a .304-hitting Power team?

"We should have won the game," Legends Manager Gregg Langbehn said. "I'll just leave it at that."
