Is Sheets coming back at all?

bklynbrewcrew
Melvin indicated this morning that they are putting together a schedule for Sheets and it's possible he could return before September 1, if they decide not to send him out for rehab. Given the state of the rotation, my bet is they are leaning to no rehab starts. If you noticed during last night's game Sheets was bending and stretching the finger so I think it's fair to say it's getting close.

To add to what JB posted, this is from the JS.

JS Online Notes

It certainly won't hurt the rotation to get ace Ben Sheets back off the disabled list, where he has been since July 15 with an injury to the middle finger of his pitching hand. The Brewers have a four-step plan for returning Sheets to the rotation at the outset of September.

Sheets is scheduled to throw one more bullpen session on this home stand, followed by a simulated game next week in Phoenix, one minor-league rehabilitation outing and then back to the rotation. That's assuming no setbacks, of course.

Depending on when the simulated start is "next week", he'd be back in Milwaukee within 10 days with a rehab assignment and five without. That puts him on track to return sometime between August 30 and September 10.

I would assume the bullpen session would be no later than Saturday, but likely Friday with the simulated game next Tuesday or Wednesday in Arizona. That would put him on track for rehab start on the 26th, then start for the Brewers on Sept 1 vs. Pirates. If they skip the rehab, he could come back and face the Cubs.

Yost was on the D-List this morning around 10am and indicated that Sheets will throw four innings of 15 pitches today and then will be off to AZ for a "simulated" game next week. Yost was actually optimistic that Sheets could be back by the Cubs series.

He also said that the pain in Sheets finger is a "1" on a scale of 1 to 10.

Was Yost referring to this chart? -- I have a hard time arguing with the "Wong-Baker Facial Grimace Scale"
