Burrell

I apologize if there's a thread already on Pat Burrell (so please move this to the other one if appropriate). But I just saw that he was "known" to have cleared waivers. With his resurgence, would anyone try to work out a deal with the Phils to obtain Burrell to bridge the gap until LaPorta's ready? Notes:

- Signed through 2008 ($14m next year, so either you include Jenkins in the deal or ask the Phillies to cover part of his salary)

- OPS around .900 the last three years and looks like he's heading toward another finish around that number

- Hits RHP and LHP almost equally as well (at least this year - I didn't research is further)

- 30.6 VORP per BP (12.5 for Jenkins; 18 for Mench; 8.5 for Gross)

- Slightly younger than Jenkins

The downside would certainly be determined on how much you'd need to give up to get him. Opinions?

No clue where you're getting that Vorp from for Mench-do they list him as a PH instead of an OFer?

And Burrell vs Jenkins platoon isn't so clear cut--Jenkins is much, much better defensively. Jenkins and Burrell both have a WARP of 3 even with Jenkins only playing part time.

18.0 for Mench was from BP's PECOTA card (that number was updated with playing time projections on 6/19). Projected VORP for 2007 was 17.4 for him. Projected playing the two corner OF positions and PH (LF 35%, RF 25%, PH 10%).

Projected WARPs for 2007 were 3.2 for Mench, 2.8 for Jenkins, and 4.4 for Burrell.

So actually, the Menchkins platoon vs Burrell is pretty evenly matched (including 2007 salary - $11.4m for Menchkins and $13m for Burrell).

What I'm probably doing the more I look into this is arguing for Menchkins again next year (at least) since Burrell may be as good as you could hope to acquire (without giving up the farm) in the off season. Or Burrell may at least be representative of what you could acquire.

Finally found where BP hid their Vorps per team on the new site. Jenkins VORP is 15, 5th on the team behind Fiedler, Braun, Hart and Hardy with Fielder and Braun lapping the rest and Hardy getting the big SS boost. Mench is at 0.4 Manny Parra is at 0.5. Pat Burell is at 25.3

And even with Sheets missing a month he's still the 31st starter by VORP

Another thing to note and I am not totally sure its still in place with the Waiver transactions, but He has a not trade clause.

And he has demonstrated in the past that he likes to use the no trade clause. I doubt he is going anywhere unless it is to the Yanks, Red Sox or Dodgers.

Burrell is destined to be a DH. The guy is an OBP machine with decent power still, but he is horrible in the field and is slow as molasses on the basepaths. If the Brewers were allowed to use a DH again, I'd take a look at him, otherwise I'd pass.

First of all, saying Burrell has "decent" power is like saying Braun has "decent" power...except worse. Pat the Bat stirs up a Hurricance with every swing of the shelele, while his Hurricane counterpart has a record of HR's at the MLB level for half a season. Furthermore, while he may not have the Hebrew Hammer's speed, I would argue that he could beat Adam Dunn or El Caballo (or my nickname for him, El Burrito) any day of the week in a 40...though I guess that would mean Pat overran the bag.
