PS3 Question

gypcasino

I know there are special wireless keyboards that are made especially for the PS3 but is it possible to plug in a regular wired keyboard for gaming purposes? Sorry if this sounds stupid. I'm asking for somebody else.

  • 1 year later...

I found this old thread regarding PS3. Figured I'd tack my questions on to this.

My son has PS2 and was really geared up for MLB 09 the show. I gave it to him as an early b-day gift last night. We was very excited. However, I could sense his excitment wane as he realized that a lot of the advertised features of the game are apparently only available on PS3.

Recently I noticed the wall for PS2 games at gamestop has shrunken considerably and I'm becoming aware that they may stop making games for PS2 all together in the near future. As much as I resisted doing this, I'm thinking about biting the bullet and purchasing a PS3 system for my son for his b-day even though it's more than what I would normally spend for a b-day gift and I'm astounded at the prices for PS3 games.

I've heard various stories regarding backwards compatibility for PS3. My understanding is that Sony stopped making backwards compatible PS3 about a year or so ago and that only the 20G systems are backwards compatible. I hear that they did this because of cost. However, I also heard that the processor that made the system backwards compatible caused the system to get very heated and not perform as well: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10714.asp. Is there any truth to this? Am I better off just getting a 60G or 80G PS3 and have my son switch between PS2 and PS3 depending on what games he wants to play? If I do this, is there any way to plug both the games into the TV using some switch to go back and forth between the systems?

Also, I find that shopping for PS3 is very confusing. I found prices all over the board. To me it would seem that the 120G would cost more than the 80G and the 80G would cost more than the 60G and so on. But, this does not seem to be the case. I would prefer to by new and I don't need a bundle...I just want the console. What prices should I expect to pay and what suggestions does anyone have regarding what system would be best to buy 20?, 40?, 60?, 80?, 120?. I'm not even sure if all these options are available or if I may even be missing one.

Thanks for any help on this.

I bought a cheap, Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo for my PS3, and it works fine. I see no reason any other 3rd party keyboard wired or not, wouldn't work.

As far as the backwards compatibility issues, who knows? It's more complicated that figuring QB rating.

I have an 80GB PS3 that's a touch over a year old, that does play most of my PS2 games, but not all.

It does get hot, but if it's on for more than 45 minutes, I have a small fan that I point at it, and it really seems to keep it from even getting warm.

Make sure your PS3 is in an area where there's some airflow, and don't have it set on fabric or carpet.

As far as I can tell, the only consoles for sale right now are the 80gb, and the 160gm bundle. I bought an 80gb PS3 a couple months ago and am happy with it. You really don't need the 160gm unless you plan on buying TONS of games, so I'd suggest going for the $399 80gm model. Just to note, you will probably want to buy an additional controller ($50), and a blu ray remote if you'll use it as a blu ray player ($25). In addition, a controller charger is also incredibly useful so that you can charge multiple controllers at once.

Yeah, Sony took out the PS2 compatibility (thought ironically the PS3 will still play old PS1 games). Supposedly the processor that allowed PS2 emulation was too expensive, and may have had other issues like you mentioned. It's pretty tough to find a PS3 that does play PS2 games anymore.

If you do buy the PS3, no reason you can't keep the PS2 and let him play his old games on that. That's what I ended up doing. If you like movies, the PS3 is awesome, because it is an excellent Bluray player, and also upconverts regular DVDs to HD resolution quite well (assuming you have a HDTV to utilize that feature).

I haven't used a keyboard for any games yet but I know it does work if you are surfing the web on your PS3. I will check my e-mail from time to time on my PS3 when I don't feel like using my laptop or desktop.

The reason for the various price points are older systems that do have backwards compatibility are sold for more than new systems that don't. Since PS2s are plentiful no reason to pay the premium. Not sure what your tie frame is, there is a rumored price break coming up but there was one before and all that turned out to be was a change in HD size. So you have the 80GB at $399 and the 160 GB at $499.

As for deals, depending on how you feel about credit cards and putting money on them, through the Sony site you can apply for a Playstation Visa and get $100 credit when you buy as PS3. If you put $3000 on the card in 6 months you get another $200 in credit.

The price break rumors on the PS3 have been coming up since the system was launched. I wouldn't hold your breath.
Actually, I've heard these rumors as well. I think the recent thought is because of the economy, Sony will need to do something with pricing. I'm hearing possibly after the end of their fiscal year (which I believe is March 31st). I also saw the Sony credit card deal. I'm giving serious thought to doing that.

Right now, the only models are the 80gb for $400 and the 160gb model for $500.

The best way to buy one now is either to keep checking bensbargains.net until Dellhome brings back the 20% off ($320) deal, or go to bestbuy and get a free Guitar Hero 3 and $50 gift card.

Add it to your cart, put in the coupon code of: Z0WPL1J0CC3W47 and you will have a 80 GB PS3 for $320 + tax and free shipping(3-5 Day Ground shipping). Coupon code is good till March 26. It is 20% off so you can use it on anything you want. Free shipping is only good for orders over $129.

As far as the price drop for the PS3, I can only see maybe a $50 price drop. The PS3 is here to stay for awhile. I can see at least the next 5 years before something new comes out.

I looked up the keyboard question and it does appear that you can plug it in any usb port and it will work. Same goes for a mouse.

I bought some songs for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band via the PlayStation store. I can download the songs after purchase, but I have no idea how I can actually go to them and actually play them. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance!

For Rock Band, once you've finished downloading the song, go to your games list and select it (to install). Then start Rock Band as usual, and the game should be available. (On Rock Band 1, there's a specific venue where you can find all the downloadable songs (Tokyo?), but in RB2 they show up in with all the other songs.

  • 4 weeks later...

So, my son gets his PS3 tomorrow for his birthday. He has no idea and will be unbelievably surprised. I think he think's he getting a couple of PS2 games or a gift certificate or something like that.

Anyways, about a week ago, when he was gone, I took it out and hooked it up. Everything seems to work fine. However, I was trying to connect to our wireless internet and I have a question. The way I have my wireless internet set up, not only do I need to enter the WEP key of my wireless router, but you can't get in unless I have your devices WEP Key (and maybe that's not the right word) listed on my security list. I remember doing this with my son's DS. How do I find the WEP key on a PS3?

As I try to play with this and set it up, I'm sure I'm going to have more questions. The brief time I had with it, I couldn't figure out how to hit enter and continue.

I just typed in my password. Same as what I have for the wireless internet set up. If that doesnt work call your isp. A few things though, having a wired connection works MUCH better. Also, a few games have problems with certain routers.(like mlb 08).
