Graffy has torn ACL; Weeks recalled

chuckcrim
Milwaukee Brewers infielder Tony Graffanino has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will be lost for the remainder of the season, tests performed today showed.

The Brewers have recalled second baseman Rickie Weeks from Class AAA Nashville. Weeks will join the Brewers in Houston Friday in time for the game against the Astros.

Graffanino suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly in the first inning Wednesday after jumping to catch a line drive off the bat of Colorado's Brad Hawpe.

Weeks was hitting .455 (10 for 22) with Nashville after being sent down to get his hitting stroke back in order. He batted just .212 in 75 games with the Brewers and hasn't homered since April 25 in a game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

After a slow start, Graffanino came on offensively in June and July. But he slumped to just eight hits in his last 46 at bats and was hitting .238 with nine homers and 30 RBI. His nine homers is a career high.

I figured this would be the case. I just hope Weeks going down to AAA and getting some consistent AB's under his belt with some success wail help him perform well now when we need him.

Yikes. Didn't think it would be that bad. Hope Weeks carries some of that momentum back to the bigs.

Good luck, Tony.....pretty sure we won't see you in a Brewer uni ever again.

It's a shame to loose Graffy... he is a very valuable player. You can never have enough sure fielding, solid hitting veterans.

I wonder who will get the majority of the playing time? It's hard to say if he'll give the starting job right to Weeks or do more of a platoon.

Why do you say that? As a utility off the bench guy, Graffy is right up there. I would think the Crew might want him again.

He's 35 and kind of expensive for what you get. I would think they could get someone cheaper and younger to do about the same thing.

Definitely sad news all around...the Brewers lose one of their better bats off the bench, and Graffanino might just see his career come to an end considering the severity of the injury and his age. Best of luck to Graffy in his recovery...he seemed to be a great guy and a leader for the younger guys in the infield.

The expensive part can be worked out. The younger part is a little more difficult.http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif

Where I have a problem is the " they could get someone cheaper and younger to do about the same thing."

Until names and numbers are compared, I still think Graffy could be back.(Its wishful on my part, I like Graffy, and hope the surgery (again) goes well for him.)

And you have to remember , guys like Graffy get expensive, because they are in short supply, and every team needs at least one, if not two .

I was hoping this wouldn't be a "slap on the wrist" again for Weeks. 22 ABs and he's back. He shouldn't have even been sent down then. Call up Crabbe or something and make a point that Rickie needs the ABs to get his confidence back. Too bad with Graffy and I just wish Weeks would've gotten at least 40 - 50 ABs...he didn't even play one game in Nashville. If Weeks has turned it around this quick, I'll really start wondering how.

The one positive about Weeks' trip down was that after the initial emotion, he seems to have taken it ok and gone out and hit very well. So at least you can assume his attitude is ok. That doesn't solve the problem of him hitting an MLB-quality curveball, but at least it appears he took it ok. Additionally, he's the plan for 2B for years to come. If it turns out that he'll never consistently hit a pitch that isn't straight, we need to know that sooner rathr than later (and the jury really is out on this issue).

slap on the wrist
That verbiage almost sounds like optioning was some kind of punishment; I don't think the Brewers viewed it that way at all. Having said that, I'd have liked to see Rickie get a couple more weeks of AAA at bats, too. It didn't work out that way, though, and I do think he was the best choice to bring back.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
