Power put team first in first half

Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter

Leave it to Kenny Holmberg, the son of a veteran coach and baseball lifer, to offer insight that his teammates either hadn't realized or hadn't shared.

Asked about the season-long success the West Virginia Power has had at the plate this year, Holmberg gave an opposite-field answer much like the opposite-field hits he often gets.

The players' success, he said, can be attributed to their failure.

"We're having a lot of success, but when we're failing, we're failing the right way," said Holmberg, a second baseman who is hitting .306 with six homers, 16 doubles, 33 runs and 37 RBI in his second season in Charleston.

"We're up there battling, taking pitches and fouling pitches off. We're hitting the ball hard. We're making good outs.

"When someone does fail, we all believe the next guy will succeed. It's like, ?OK, I'll pick you up this time, and you pick me up next time.' It's funny. It's almost like a joke we have. When somebody makes an out and comes back into the dugout, we're like, ?Way to start the rally.'

"We're a team. We have a lot of synergy, and we thrive off of that."

Northern Division champion West Virginia (45-18) will conclude the South Atlantic League season's first half with a four-day, five-game homestand against Lake County (29-36) at Appalachian Power Park.

The division rivals will start their series at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central). The Power will start right-hander Jeremy Jeffress (2-0, 1.98). The Captains will throw right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (5-5, 5.52).

The series' second game is set for Friday night. A day-night doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, with the first game at noon. The series' final game -- and the first half's -- is set for Sunday evening.

Then, the Power will receive a three-day mini-vacation for the SAL all-star break. The all-star game is set for 7:30 (6:30 Central) Tuesday night at State Mutual Stadium, the home of the Rome (Ga.) Braves.

Power Manager Mike Guerrero will lead the Northern Division all-star team. Power hitting coach Corey Hart will join Guerrero on the staff.

Catcher Andy Bouchie, center fielder Darren Ford, starting pitcher Mike McClendon and relief pitcher E.J. Shanks were selected to the all-star team.

But Ford, McClendon and Shanks won't play in the game because the Milwaukee Brewers promoted them to high Class A Brevard County (Fla.) last week.

Starting pitcher Zach Braddock, outfielder Chuckie Caufield and third baseman Taylor Green will replace Ford, McClendon and Shanks on the all-star roster, according to league officials.

West Virginia enters its homestand with a league-leading .306 team batting average, which is 33 percentage points better than second-place Charleston, S.C.

All that means, according to Holmberg, is "we make an out seven out of 10 times we step up to the plate."

Perhaps the most important averages to consider when looking at West Virginia's statistics are these: .326 with runners on base, .363 with the bases loaded, .325 with runners in scoring position and .307 with runners in scoring position and two outs.

Providing timely hits in clutch situations has allowed the Power to score a league-leading 423 runs and a league-leading 6.7 runs per game.

Greensboro has the next highest total (379 runs) and the next highest average (5.7 runs per game).

Hart often has attributed the Power's hitting success and scoring prowess to momentum.

"This game thrives off momentum," he said. "Hits are contagious. The first guy comes up and gets a hit. Then, the next guy comes up and gets a hit. Then, the next thing you know you put three or four together and you are rolling."

* * *

The Power coaches and players can make a case that their club is the best team in the 20-year history of Charleston's SAL membership.

They need three wins to break the franchise record for the most wins in a half (47, set by the 1990 Wheelers) and are on pace to easily eclipse the franchise mark for the highest winning percentage in a half (.657, set by the 1991 Wheelers).

What's up with Fermaint and Ford? They trade spots, but the spot they assume remains the same. Fermaint can't make an out and Ford can't buy a hit....... It's the Power uniform.........

Jeffress with another fine outing. Way cool.

McClendon with another great start tonight...i hate to do this...but his meteoric rise is reminscent of Jeff Housman's...both have had a ton of success in the low minors without a fastball...

of course, McClendon's sinker could carry him a lot further than Housman's smoke and mirrors...

Jeremy Jeffress is the freakin' man...he hasnt thrown that many innings, but he's on an 80 pitch count limimt, so the fact that he's made it 5 twice now is very encouraging..

Anyone else feel sorry for Gomez the pitcher from Lake County? He gives up 10 earned in 4.1, I guess the bull pen was gassed or something. He had given up 7 through 3.

Also, Gillespie's lines have been pretty horrid again lately. Here's hoping for a better 2nd half.

Sounds Blank Redbirds In Series Finale, 4-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Adam Pettyjohn worked seven scoreless innings and combined with a pair of relievers on a 4-0 shutout victory over the division-rival Memphis Redbirds on Thursday afternoon at AutoZone Park in the finale of a four-game series.

The victory, Nashville?s fourth shutout of the year, was the 11th win in the last 15 games for the Sounds (38-29), who improved to a season-best nine games over .500.

The Sounds recorded their first winning road series since late April, taking three of four from their cross-state rivals, and finished the successful road trip with a 5-3 record.

Pettyjohn (2-1), who earned a win for the second straight start, held the Redbirds to four hits while walking two batters and striking out six over his seven scoreless frames. The southpaw continued his dominance of Memphis in his career, extending his scoreless streak against the club to 14 2/3 frames over two starts.

Joe Thatcher and Grant Balfour each worked a scoreless inning behind Pettyjohn to preserve the shutout. The three Nashville hurlers combined on a six-hitter.

Sounds leftfielder Drew Anderson put the visitors on the board in the top of the third inning with a mammoth 405-foot home run to left-center off Memphis starter Troy Cate. The leadoff solo blast was his first of the year with the Sounds; he homered once during his 14-game stint with Double-A Huntsville last month.

Nashville doubled the lead to 2-0 later in the frame with an unearned run stemming from a pair of Cate errors. Ozzie Chavez reached on a Cate fielding error, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a Cate throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a Callix Crabbe sacrifice fly to right.

The Sounds increased the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. With two outs, Vinny Rottino singled and stole second before scoring on a Mike Rivera double to deep right-center. On the play, Redbirds rightfielder Rick Ankiel crashed through an outfield wall gate while pursuing the ball; he was uninjured and remained in the game.

Nashville added to the lead in the eighth against the Memphis bullpen. Chavez drew a walk from Chris Lambert to open the frame and quickly moved to third on a well-executed hit-and-run single from pinch-hitter Brad Nelson. Crabbe contributed his second RBI of the afternoon when he followed with a run-scoring single to left to plate Chavez for a 4-0 advantage.

Cate (1-5) took the loss for Memphis after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out five batters over five innings of work.

The Sounds travelled home to Nashville following Thursday's game and open a seven-game homestand on Friday evening when they welcome the division-rival Omaha Royals to Greer Stadium for the clubs? third series of the year and second within the last week. Omaha leads the season series, 6-2.

Right-hander Tim Dillard (3-4, 4.32) will take the hill for the Sounds in Friday?s 7 p.m. CT series opener. Omaha will counter with right-hander Jason Shiell (2-1-, 3.28).
