Bynres signs extension with Dbacks

Why I'd rather have 1 more year of Geoff Jenkins, Exhibit A.

Byrnes is 31, and is having his career year. He's hitting ~ .035 - .040 better than his career averages (which carries over to his OBP and SLG). Just last year, he was a sub-.800 OPS corner outfielder, a near perfect match of his career numbers. Does anyone really think he'll keep this production up over the life of the deal?

I have to agree with bjkrautk. Spending is once again going to skyrocket, and I believe that we will see Jenkins as the left-handed part of a LF platoon once again next season. Jenkins' salary isn't that out of line anymore for his production. Pair him with a league-minimum righty that can hit lefties reasonably well, and I think we'll be alright until LaPorte's debut.

Byrnes is a fan-favorite and is putting together a good season, but $10MM/year seems like a lot of money for what he's done over his career. I cringe when I think of what Prince and Braun are going to receive even in their arby years.

Bad move for the D'Backs, especially when you consider their glut of corner outfield types. They should have let him walk. I would be devastated if the Brewers had signed Byrnes to this contract, it just seems to make very little sense to sign an over-30, below-average offensive corner outfielder to a contract like that. His defense is also said to be atrocious, so I'm not sure what kind of asset he'll be when Carlos Gonzalez is ready.

Yeah, I had heard that Byrnes and his agent had said publicly that they were done talking until the off-season. Guess not.

Bad deal, but the fans love him like they loved Gonzo.

The worst part of this deal is they gave it to him for the career year he is having, but his numbers have always fallen off dramatically in the 2nd half, so his great year might not even end up being a great year.

The difference is that Luis Gonzalez was truly a great player during his time in AZ. Byrnes is a scrub 4th outfielder type having a career year. I'm not sure how much the fans will love him once that becomes clear.

Now maybe not at 3yr/$30M but 3yr/$20M definitely. Not to mention his defense is spectacular at times.

To compare, here is Gonzo's numbers over the same seasons:
I don't know. Gonzo had some good years but Byrnes hasn't been a sham either. His 2004 season looks pretty darn good so this year is not some "career year". He's always had talent but some pesky injuries (2005 season) have kept him from having completely consistent "career year" numbers every year.

I still agree that he's going to be overpaid, but don't say he doesn't deserve it due to a "career year." And even if it was a "career year" and he's being paid for it, well, that's the way baseball economics seem to work--play hard and put up good numbers equals pay raise. Exhibit B: Bill Hall.

I'm shocked by this, as are some Dbacks fans I've spoken with. They dealt Hairston, and now a trade of 2 out of Conor Jackson, Chad Tracy, Carlos Quentin, and Chris Carter seems imminent. I'd happily take any of them for LF next year, especially Carter or Quentin

I wouldnt have given this deal to Byrnes either but some of you that think this deal is bad were loving the Suppan deal which is far worse in my opinion. At least Byrnes is having a very good year this year. Suppan has never had a season worthy of 10 mil a yr.
