Just like how signing Roger Clemens has catapulted NYY into first place in the AL East. One player always either costs his team its shot or is the sole reason for it.

The team's expected record in Sheets starts is 11-8. Assuming he had 26 starts like Suppan that would be 4-3 over those 7 starts. Assuming he replaced our worst pitcher (Capuano 10-13) who would be 3-4 over 7 starts. Sheets getting hurt probably cost us 1 win, maybe 2 if you count the extra bullpen work, that might reach 3 games if the blister delays his comeback.

Don't see how you can say he cost us the season though if we just barely miss the playoffs his injury most certainly plays a role in it.

Some people just need a single person to blame. I guess it makes them feel better or something.

If it's close, you could say that about any player that missed time and/or played below their expectations. Hall, Suppan, Cappy, Bush, Sheets, Estrada, Mench.... Me? I blame Robin Yount.

In April, I thought that a key individual statistic this season would be Sheets' IP. I really thought that having him log 200+ IP would steady the rotation, save the bullpen, and generally help to provide some stability -- all the stuff you expect from a #1 starter.

The good news is that team is still in contention without that contribution from Sheets over the last month-plus. Even just getting him back for September will be a boost. I mean, if you just imagine that the team is getting an All-Star starter for the final month of the season (and you can forget the disappointment associated with Sheets' season), it seems promising.

He really needs to dominate, though. No excuses.

Jsonline is new reporting that Ben will not pitch this weekend.

Not surprising. Waiting one more start to make sure the blister won't be a problem is probably a good idea. We're dying to get him back, but a blown blister could put him out for another 2-4 weeks.

I wanted 175 IP or so out of Ben. 200 IP would have blown his shoulder up next year most likely, so for me the injury was a blessing in surprise assuming he comes back from it soon. A non arm related injury that lets them not overuse his shoulder is just what the doctor ordered.

Come on, ennder. 25 extra innings would have "probably blown up his shoulder?" I'm usually for seeing on the bright side of things, but that seems like a stretch. He's not even going to make 175 IP, so I don't see how you can pretend losing Sheets is a good thing.

I believe Vargas was scheduled for Wednesday and Gallardo for Thursday if Ben wasn't ready, but with the news coming out about Vargas' injury, I think it's pretty doubtful that he makes his start. Considering how horrible the Cubs are against lefties, I wouldn't be surprised if Manny Parra or Chris Capuano started in Vargas' place.

Speaking of the "double blister", isn't anyone else thinking that it was totally preventable had the trainer or Mike Maddux used his head? They send out Ben to throw a "simulated game" on Phoenix afternoon with the temperature of around 110. Here's a guy with a blister history throwing four seamers and hard curves in the heat with no protection on his hand? There's no rule about wearing a small tape or bandage on a finger in a "simulated" game is there?

Or Ben Sheets could just be made of glass...

Dude has more weak injuries than anyone I've ever seen. Blisters, sore fingers, inner ear infections? I'm just waiting for Ben to hurt himself sneezing or to go on the DL with a broken finger nail. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/eyes.gif

Toughness does not seem to be Ben's strong suit.
