Potential Playoff Roster (lumberrule's new thread 'merged' into this one)

endaround

Hey time for a dose of optimism! With the roster due at the end of the month, what will the Brewer playoff roster look like? The big question is whether they go with 11 or 12 pitchers.

11 pitchers:

Position players

Fielder

Weeks

Graffanino

Counsell

Hardy

Braun

Estrada

Miller

Jenkins

Mench

Hall

Hart

Dillon

Gross

Pitchers

Sheets

Capuano

Suppan

Bush

Vargas (in relief)

Shouse

Wise

Linebrink

Turnbow

Cordero

Gallardo

With 12 pitchers, add in Spurling and take out Dillon would be my guess.

I think it is insane to go with 12 pitchers in the first round of the playoffs. You go with 11, and if you win and have an injury, you replace.

I might swap out Gallardo with Parra because it seems like they are committed to keeping him in the rotation until he doesn't have any innings left. That could turn out to be a wise move, if only because you need to get to the playoffs first.

Rottino might be a possibility over Dillon, as could TGJ. And that bench looks pretty good.

Many teams only go with 9-10 pitchers, as you obviously don't need more than 3-4 SP's, and the days off are plentiful.

The Brewers always seem to keep 1 more pitcher than you'd think they would. If they go with 10, I suspect Gwynn would be a lock. I really have a suspicion they'll bring up Rottino at some point soon so they can have a third catcher on the roster, allowing Estrada to pinch hit.

Take out Dillion and put in Gwynn and I would agree. I am not sold that Gwynn would be the better choice just that Yost and Melvin seem to like him off the bench. I could even see one more pitcher left off, but I don't know who that would be. Vargas or maybe Wise at this point. Might also add Parra so Ned has another lefty out in the pen.

I agree, it'll probably be Gwynn for his pinch running and defense late in playoff games, but Dillon's had some nice cuts and we need someone who hits both RHP EDIT: and LHP off the bench. So I'd say Dillon has a shot to get on the playoff roster over Gwynn if he looks competent the rest of the way.

Doug Melvin has to set a playoff roster before the September 1st callups. However, there are a number of exceptions that allow teams to change their rosters from series to series.

As it would seem to be fun to keep track of how our opinions might change over the next few weeks, this is a good topic for the Designated Threads List. I'll add it.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Right. If I understand things correctly, the playoff eligible list has to be set by August 31st. Your playoff eligible list is the 25 active players on your roster, your 15 day dl, your 60 day dl and anyone on the bereavement list. Before each round of the playoffs the team builds a 25 man roster from this pool.

For each person on the 60 day dl, you get to add one replacement player from your 40 man roster to your playoff eligible list . So for the Brewers that means that we will (would) get to carry someone else in place of Corey Koskie. The catch is that the replacement player has to play the same position as the DL'ed player. So in this case, were talking another third baseman.

Now here's the question I have. Do we bring Weeks (or Gross and Gwynn for that matter) back up before the September 1st call ups to make them eligible for the postseason? The way I read the rules, if we wait until 9/01 to recall Weeks he would not be eligible for the postseason.

I know I left Gallardo off. I think he is better than some of the pitchers that I have on there, but i think he will hit his innings limit for the year by the end of August. I don't see the Brewers keeping more than 11 pitchers for the playoffs because of off days. I wouldn't be surprised to see them substitute Dillion for either Gross or more likley Gwynn, depending how he does in August.

EDIT: If Yo makes all of his starts in August he will have approx. 20 innings left for the month of September. Even if he is shut down for all of September, which I think would be foolish if you want him to pitch again this year, he would only be good for 3-4 more short starts in the playoffs.

Here's my question, if Yo continues to pitch the way he has, even if he hits his innings limit near mid-September, how can you justify leaving him off the playoff roster and potentially having a rotation of any combination of Sheets, Capuano and Suppan...Bush and Vargas interchangeable.

I know we don't want to ruin the kid's arm, but I think it would be absolutely foolish, if we claim a playoff spot, and if the majority of our rotation continues to be as sporadic as it's been, if we don't take Yo to the playoffs as one of our guys in the playoff rotation.

  • 5 weeks later...

Yes, yes I know...theyre not there yet. But its not too early to start thinking about the potential playoff roster for the first round (remember, rosters can be revised after every round of the playoffs). Here's what I would construct:

Pitchers

Ben Sheets

Dave Bush

Jeff Suppan

Yovani Gallardo

Francisco Cordero

Brian Shouse

Derrick Turnbow

Matt Wise

Scott Linebrink

Carlos Villanueva

Chris Capuano

Position Players

Johnny Estrada

Damian Miller

Vinny Rottino

Prince Fielder

Rickie Weeks

JJ Hardy

Ryan Braun

Craig Counsell

Joe Dillon

Geoff Jenkins

Corey Hart

Gabe Gross

Bill Hall

Kevin Mench

Quick Thoughts:

-I'm assuming that if the make the playoffs, the Brewers have to be leanient on Yo's "limit" of innings. He's been one of our best, most consistent pitchers this second half.

-Chris Capuano is only on this roster in case of an emergency, i.e. unexpected injury or to suck up innings in a blowout. Have to have someone like this on the roster

-Carry Vinny Rottino. I think you have to have 3 catchers on the roster, and Rottino fits the bill for that and can also do so many other things

quick question: I thought you could only "revise" your post-season roster in-between rounds if there was an injury. Is this not true anymore? I'm almost positive that that used to be the rule.

I've never heard that you could revise your roster between rounds. Not sure about the Wainwright case.

To my understanding, no player is eligible for the playoffs unless they were on the 25 man roster as of August 31st. So that would make Rottino ineligible.

If you are in the organization on 8/31, you are eligible to some extent. That's why King isn't eligible. If you're on the big league roster on 9/1, you are eligible.

This would be my 25-man roster for the first round:

Pitchers

Dave Bush

Chris Capuano

Francisco Cordero

Scott Linebrink

Ben Sheets

Brian Shouse

Jeff Suppan

Derrick Turnbow

Carlos Villanueva

Matt Wise

Infielders

Ryan Braun

Craig Counsell

Joe Dillon

Johnny Estrada

Prince Fielder

JJ Hardy

Damien Miller

Vinny Rottino

Rickie Weeks

Outfielders

Gabe Gross

Bill Hall

Corey Hart

Geoff Jenkins

Kevin Mench

Mel Stocker
