In progress: Lake County (Indians) 10, West Virginia 3, bottom of the 4th in Charleston

Tough outing for Brae Wright today after two excellent starts -- a Brent Brewer error in the 4th didn't help, but that was only a small part of the problem; surely management was hoping for more in terms of innings, staff is pretty short right now, and tonight's nightcap is a nine-inning affair (day/night doubleheader)

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

CAPTAINS SNAP SKID AGAINST POWER

The Lake County Captains scored 12 runs on a season high 19 hits as they snapped their seven game losing streak with a 12-4 victory over the West Virginia Power in the first half of a day/night doubleheader at Appalachian Power Park.

Taylor Green singled in a run in with two outs in the first, Andy Bouchie scored on a wild pitch and Brent Brewer batted in Jimmy Mojica on a single.

The Captains pulled away after a Dave Uribes RBI single in the third and a five-run fourth inning. Whitney and Nick Weglarz doubled in two runs each and Uribes reached on a wild pitch to plate Weglarz. Andrew Lefave hit a solo home run, his seventh of the year, in the fifth inning to plate West Virginia?s last run. In the eighth, Whitney hit his second homer of the game, giving him four hits and five RBI in the contest. Carlos Rivero brought in the final run on a double.

Josh Tomlin (6-0) got the victory while Brae Wright (4-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits over three and a third. Chris Toneguzzi and Jose Romero combined to allow just two runs on eight hits over five and two thirds out of the bullpen.

Final: Nashville 7, Omaha (Royals) 5

Details from Sounds site shortly...

Wow -- walk-off two-run HR for Callix Crabbe to send the Sounds to a 7-5 victory!

Vinny Rottino had homered in the 8th to tie the game.

Chris Oxspring recovered nicely from some early trouble, and Steve Bray and Joe Thatcher more than fine in relief.

Iowa is losing a tight game as of this post, there could be a first-place Sounds team in the morning.

Déjà Vu! Sounds Walk Off Against Royals Again

NASHVILLE ? Sounds second baseman Callix Crabbe hit a game-winning two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Nashville a 7-5 win over the Omaha Royals, the club?s second last at-bat victory in two days.

The blast, which came against Royals reliever and former Brewer farmhand Roberto Giron, was Crabbe?s fourth longball of the season and his second game-ending homer. He was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs in the game.

Nashville (40-29) won its fourth straight game and logged its 13th victory in the last 17 contests.

Sounds reliever Joe Thatcher (1-1) earned his first career Triple-A win by throwing two-thirds of an inning and striking out one.

The Sounds scored the first run for a PCL-leading 44th time in the bottom of the first inning when Crabbe scored on a Joe Dillon sacrifice fly off of Royals starter Matt Wright. Dillon currently leads the team with 41 RBIs on the season.

Omaha (33-36) tied the game in the top of the third inning on a Mitch Maier solo home run, his sixth of the season and second of the series.

The Royals jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning by beginning with back-to-back singles from Bill McCarthy and Jorge Padilla. Paul Phillips then singled to load the bases before Derek Wathan would add a one-out, two RBI single in his Omaha debut. Phillips and Wathan both scored on wild pitches before Oxspring successfully struck out the side to complete the rough inning.

The Sounds lowered the deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Jose Macias led off the inning with a double before Crabbe reached first base on a walk. Chris Barnwell then hit a line drive to left-center that bounced over the wall for an RBI ground rule double. Laynce Nix followed with a single that blooped into shallow left, allowing Crabbe and Barnwell to score.

Nashville catcher Vinny Rottino tied the game against Giron in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo shot off of the guitar-shaped scoreboard. It was Rottino?s seventh home run and second guitar shot of the season. He went 3-for-4 on the night with a pair of stolen bases and an RBI.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Macias singled through the gap into left field before Crabbe hit a 2-0 pitch from Giron (0-3) over the right field wall to give Nashville its second consecutive last at-bat victory.

Sounds starter Chris Oxspring, who entered the contest as the Pacific Coast League ERA leader, took a no-decision after tying a season high by giving up five runs in seven innings but struck out nine.

The teams continue the series with game three of four on Sunday at 6 p.m. Sounds right-hander R.A. Dickey (4-4, 5.78) will make a spot start, filling the rotation slot of recently-promoted Yovani Gallardo, and square off against Omaha southpaw Nate Hoelscher (2-0, 3.79).

Nashville Box Score:

What a season for Callix Crabbe thus far in his first stint at AAA; Vinny Rottino three hits, two stolen bases -- he was behind the plate and Chris Oxspring did throw run-scoring wild pitches to consecutive batters in the 4th, neither ruled a passed ball -- for those of you wondering if Vinny would make more sense on the Brewer roster than Kevin Mench, Rottino has a surprisingly odd split vs. southpaws this season -- only a .482 OPS (9-for-45) in an acknowledged small sample...

Nice start by Shawn Fergeson. He may be older age-wise, but not experience-wise, as he missed alot of time in college with injury. Its worthwhile to keep giving oppurtunities to hard throwers like him. Did we ever find out if it was an injury that kept him in EST to start the year?

Hope Alive and Well for Huntsville!

Carlos Corporan singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 16th inning to lift Huntsville to a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win against Birmingham on Saturday in front of the biggest crowd of the season, 8,427, at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 36-31 and remain tied with Tennessee with one game to go in the first half. The Smokies will face West Tenn at home in a game that starts two hours after the Stars and Barons get underway Sunday afternoon.

Lou Palmisano opened the decisive frame with a leadoff single, the Stars? first hit since the eighth inning, and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Heether, the fifth of the game for Huntsville. Brendan Katin was intentionally passed to bring up Corporan, who had been mired in a 1-for-26 slump. He bounced a 1-1 offering from Bittner into center field to chase home Palmisano with the winning run in the Stars' fifth walk-off win this season.

Bo Hall worked three scoreless frames to earn his second win of the season and complete a run of 10 shutout frames by the bullpen. Mark DiFelice went four scoreless behind starter Steve Hammond to push his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 19 2/3, and was followed by Marino Salas, who tossed two scoreless, and Luis Pena, who set down all three batters he faced.

The Stars scored in the first inning on a Gio Gonzalez wild pitch that brought Steve Moss home from third and a leadoff home run in the second by Heether, who ended an 0-for-16 drought with his third long ball of the season. Birmingham tied the game at one in the second inning and knotted things up at two on a two-out home run by Thomas Collaro, who moved into a three-way tie for the league lead, in the sixth.

The series and first half come to an end Sunday afternoon, as Huntsville will send southpaw Lindsay Gulin to the hill against Barons? left-hander Kris Honel. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on Sports Radio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
