Is Callix Crabbe a Prospect Again?

DrWood
Before the season, I thought he only was promoted to make room for Iribarren, but he's done quite nicely in Nashville. He's still pretty young, is a switch hitter, has learned to play the OF, and still walks more than strikes out. I could see a space for him as an IF-OF utility guy after Graffy is gone. Might be between him and Rottino.

He could be, if he can play SS in the bigs. Given that he came up as a 2B and now is playing some at SS, that's probably unlikely. 2B in the minors, as a rule, do not promote well to the bigs. Usually, they leave the better prospects at SS until AA or AAA, and then switch them.

Weeks is an exception, but that's often the case. 2B is usually a spot where they put guys that have weaknesses (range, arm, speed) in the low minors, and few ever overcome them.

I think Callix is still the same guy he has always been...he's not really a "prospect" because he doesn't project to be much of a big leaguer...

Pecota ( a reputable projection system used by the guys at baseball prospectus) has Callix at .257/.337/.342...i dont think his stats in nashville would alter that projections much...he just doesnt have a whole lot of versatility and he posesses no power at all...

he'll play in the majors, but he probably won't start

Crabbe can play 2B and now gets time in CF, those are 2 tough positions to fill. He's outhitting what Gwynn hit at AAA last year. I see no reason why he couldn't be a Willie Harris type player. It would be handy to 1 player who could handle all the roles Gwynn and Graffanino fill.

"Pecota has Callix at .257/.337/.342."

Those numbers look an awful lot like Craig Counsell's career numbers: .259/.344/.349. If he could play adequate short, he's a nice utility alternative in a couple years at a bargain price.

In the spring of 06, the Brewers were playing a spring training game vs. the White Sox that was televised in Chicago. Hawk Harrelson has some real nice things to say about Crabbe who looked really smooth that day, making several nice plays, and beating out infield hits.
