Wes Helms speaks out (Booing former Brewers)

AJAY

Interesting excerpt from an AP article . . . .

Helms made sure of it in the 11th, as the former Brewer silenced the booing fans.

"That is just the nature of this city," said Helms, who played in Milwaukee from 2003 to 2005. "They do it to every player that comes back that used to play here.

"I think fans don't realize that actually pumps a player up, and it makes me want to beat them."

While I do think there is some truth to this, does Helms understand that he showed up to spring training completely out of shape after Doug Melvin gave him a two-year contract? There is a reason he gets booed.

I think booing is part of the game, but I also think people need to know when enough is enough. Wes has been gone from here long enough, let it go, he's just the next guy in someone else's lineup now.

Brady Clark didn't deserve to be booed here, and while I think the Carlos Lee situation is somewhat understandable, I think it goes too far, and I hope it doesn't continue beyond this season.

It's Wes Helms. Who cares what he says. This is probably the last interview he'll get this year.
Huh? Seems like a cheap way to write off a legitimate statement. Whether it's Carlos Lee, Brady Clark, Jeremy Burnitz, or whoever, Milwaukee fans as a whole feel that they have some sort of misguided duty to boo former players. Especially in the case of Brady Clark, it makes absolutely no sense; he did nothing but play hard here.

Generally, I support the boo-birds of major league baseball because I think it is part of the game. If a guy acts like a jerk, boo him. If a player isn't hustling, boo him. If a guy bolts your team to sign a big contract elsewhere, boo him. If your team is really stinking up the joint, I think booing is an acceptable way to show displeasure and vent some emotion.

However, I think the booing has gotten out of control lately in Milwaukee. A lot of it doesn't even make sense. It should be reserved for the sports' biggest jerks, and your team's most pathetic on-the-field play. I was pretty surprised when Helms got booed a few years back on opening day while he was still a Brewer. He struggled some, but I never thought it was for lack of effort. I thought that booing was classless. I also don't understand booing a guy like Brady Clark who busted his butt for years with us, or booing a starting pitcher who gives up 2 or 3 runs in an inning.

It really angers me how dumb a majority of our fans are.

For gosh sakes, Braun was getting booed by the end of the game!

I hate how we booed Brady Clark; and I disliked when Doug Davis got booed. Davis was a pitcher that performed above expectations for us and we got a good trade out of him. How can you boo him?

I really am starting to hope Lyle O never comes back to town. I would be livid if he got booed.

I coudn't agree more, booing Brady Clark or Doug Davis? Give me a break, here were two guys who were traded, they didn't leave Milwaukee via free agency, they were traded. It just seems like Milwaukee fans have been acting like Cubs fans lately, and I'm sick of it. If you want to boo, stay home, no one needs to hear you, boo your TV.

I agree.. For some reason Milwaukee fans have been booing former players like nuts. Last year I was sort of amazed how hard Victor Santos got booed. This year I was against the Milwaukee fans booing Carlos Lee (not just booing him, doing the "CAR-LOS, CAR-LOS, CAR-LOS... YOU SUCK!" chant which Carlos was good natured about) when he didn't ask to be traded and in trading him we netted a pretty solid player in Cordero who has helped this team win a lot of games.

If a guy is a jerk on the way out of town then by all means he deserves it, but most of these guys didn't ask to be released or traded and don't deserve the boos.

Actually, it was more of a knee-jerk reaction to my disgust of seeing Wes Helms get a big hit in a bad loss.

For the record, I haven't booed any of the former Brewers (with the exception of Carlos when he hit a home run but I believe he would have wanted it that way). Oh--and Sheffield. I didn't boo Bonds either though I detest him.

Anyone who boos Brady or DD is an idiot. Period. The only thing they must know is that they were once Brewers.

Sorry about the knee-jerk post. I usually refrain from that but I'm in a really bad mood.

Happens at Bucks games also,i don't get it.I never boo anyone, but i guess i can understand booing a guy like Sheffield who made remarks that people could take offense to.When i was at a Astros games this year and heard all these fans booing Carlos Lee,i almost felt some shame as a Brewer fan that this was happening to a guy that didn't deserve it at all.

Even worse when our fans boo like crazy at one of our pitchers if he's having a bad game,as if the guy on the mound doesn't already feel bad enough for letting him team down. Then you have thousands of morons who scream at or boo the guy as he's walking back to the dugout.Classy stuff.

Bad mood? About today?? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yeah, I notice that the boo-birds come out for ANY former Brewer.... I wonder if even Lyle Overbay would be immune from it. I think it's a function of more casual fans coming to the games and just booing whenever they get the opportunity because it's "fun".

Milwaukee fans have a long way to go until they reach the general class level of St. Louis fans.... I think that will come with more consistent winning.

If they'll boo Brady, they'll boo Lyle.

1 point for Milwaukee fans, though--they did give Glavine an ovation last week. I was surprised to see that.

And booing a struggling pitcher is one of the stupidest things fans can do IMO. Add insult to injury...that'll help him out. I'm sure that Wise was really motivated walking off the mound today.

Woah--I really need to stop posting today lest I head on over to the vent thread--in fact, I think I'm gonna.

"Milwaukee fans have a long way to go until they reach the general class level of St. Louis fans.... I think that will come with more consistent winning. "

I realized this a while ago when I saw Rickey hit that giant home run at old Busch and the fans gave him a round of applause. I thought that was classy.

It has bothered me that Brewer fans have been such boo birds. I remember in 1982 how the announcers would say we had such great fans. I wonder if that was ever really true, or if we've just been jerked around so long and then gotten our expectations up and we've turned sour.

Then again, I remember talking to some friends from Green Bay when I was at college, and they said they thought Milwaukee fans were bad fans in terms of the Packers. They said we were "mean" to them and hard on them. This was back in the mid 80's though when the Pack really, really sucked. Maybe we're just bad fans.

I don't think anyone would boo Overbay. Dude was one of the most popular players on the team while he was here.

If I were to boo(which I do a lot of) it would be players like Jeffrey Hammonds or Wes Helms(Yes I was one of the losers that boo'ed him on opening day a few years ago).

I see Wes is still a Brewer killer. He has been winning games for the other team since he played for us. I wouldn't boo Wes "Fatty" Helms even though I still am sickened by his play.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Wes has a point, although I can only think of one former Brewer I'd legitimately boo. I find that the more we boo/heckle someone the better they do. Except Eric Owens, but that was back at County Stadium, lol.

Agree 100%. No one cares what Wes Helms thinks -- but I am sure that it helps him get his mojo up when he is up to bat with ducks on the pond in extra innings.

Again, why do we want to diminish our HF advantage, by stirring the Wes Helms pot?

To me booing in general is lame. Obviously there are exceptions - boo a bad call by an ump, boo the other team when they are showing you up, boo the other team when they throw high and tight on your big hitter, boo cheaters like Sheffield and Bonds, boo your own team when they have a series of gaffs in the field, etc....but booing Wes Helms on Opening Day was inexcusable. As is all this booing of former players....yeah, it's your right as a fan and you can do what you want but it's my right to think you are an idiot too.

They boo'd Cirillo. Anything is possible.

Oh, and dear fans sitting in section 420 and 421, if you're going to say "SOOUUUUUUP" say SOUP. Not BOO.

well prince said after the win on saturday that he wished that thr fans would stop booing because it is poor

I saw that interview and it has stuck with me. I have never seen the Brewers play so well at home and yet get booed. If the fans were following them on the road I could see it, but there is just not enough bad happening at home to cause the negativity.
