2. What on earth does the "jump" button do? I really want to push it, but with my ultra slow internet connection here on the ship it might just take me a half hour to get back into the game thread. Plus it intimidates me.

I think the jump button is so that you can go to a specific page of the thread, particularly when there are too many to be displayed.
