Media attention the Cubs receive

Ok didnt know where to put this, in the vent thread or another thread. But anyways, is anyone else really getting tired of all the media attention the cubs get. I mean they are on fox every sat afternoon. And sportscenter as something about them on every single show. Whether it being about the tirade of Pinnella or the fight between Zambrano and Barrett. I guess im just sick of seeing/hearing about the cubs every where i look. I just want the cubs to suck again and the brewers to get hot!!! I guess this could of gone in the vent thread, so lock it up if you want.

There are more Cub fans scattered across the country then any other fan base (maybe besides the Yankees)

National media would be crazy not to cover them as much as possible. Yeah, it's annoying to us brewer fans but if you aren't interested, I suggest just turning the channel or just taking it for what it is.

As much as it sickens me, I do think the Cubs are a big story right now. I can understand the media coverage considering that they just climbed up so many games in the standings and are also one of the hottest teams in baseball. When the Brewers were the hot story, we got a lot of media coverage too.

I am just more mad that the Brewers let such a huge lead slide away.

The NY, Chicago and LA markets are a small portion of the overall market. They are way overplayed and is one of the reasons many people have tuned out baseball over the years. That said, the Fox games are regional. We (East Coast) get stuck with the Yankees and Red Sox primarily although we have the Cubs this week. Living in the Midwest, you get stuck with the Scrubs. My Red Sox fan friend says he doesn't need NESN because he gets about 60 Red Sox games televised in the DC market already. That's enough to keep your interest. I really think baseball should at least try to force the networks to be a little more democratic. It's always more fun to see teams with new players, rookies, etc. than the same old guys year after year. Doesn't have to be just the Brewers for me.

But there are also people who were born and raised in NY, Chicago and LA living all over the United States. You can just look at the market in those specific cities.

Coverage is one thing. The Chicago marketalone is huge, and the Cubs do have a national fan base. The problem , as I see it, isn't so much coverage as it is the barely (if at all) concealed rooting that is going on for the Cubs in much of the supposedly "impartial" journalistic coverage. It's pretty apparent to me that outlets like ESPN would like nothing better than for the Cubs to become the new Red Sox. They'd probably really love it if the Cubs became did so by beating the Sox in the Series.

I can almost guarantee that, when the Brewers win the division and the Cubs go home without the wildcard, the story won't be about the small-market, organizationally-developed Brewers beating the we-bought-a-roster Cubs. Instead, it will be a story, told with clear disappointment, about how the Cubs lost yet again. Even if the tone is one of ridicule, rather than disappointment, it will still immensly overshadow the whatever coverage there is of a Brewer franchise which has fought off a losing history of its own.

Not winning a World Series in 100 years and playing in one of the nation's biggest markets will get you a ton of attention whenever you get close to contending. The Cubs have probably been the best team in baseball since early-to-mid June, so I think the attention is deserved. The only thing I have a problem with is the media hyping up Kerry Wood's return as some kind of huge trade deadline acquisition -- the guy is pretty much done as a starter and the best they can hope for is that he gives them a few solid innings a week and maybe becomes the closer once he gets settled in.

The fact that there's Cub fans everywhere across the country (even if they're fake Cub fans, like how the Yankees have fake fans that barely pay attention to the team...those are mostly the fans outside of the tri-state area) also probably has a lot to do with why they get so much coverage. I'd be careful complaining about it, though -- how much do you think Bears fans complain about how the Packers get so much national attention even when they stink? The Packers could finish behind the Bears for a decade straight and they'd still probably end up with as many Monday Night games as anyone in the league.

You know what I am getting tired of, and I'm sure the team is...

Our local media asking the team about the Cubs.

Hey local media, how about giving the local team a break and only talk about the local team and the game they just played.

How would you feel? You go out and do your job, and you have to answer questions about some other team. What is that garbage?

Journalists root for STORIES, not teams. Most will admit to that (as opposed to claiming "impartiality" or "objectivity". The Cubs make for a great STORY due to their drought, the size of the fanbase, etc etc as mentioned. Big stories mean big exposure for those coverring them. It's the way the world is. Deal with it.

If not for Prince being Cecil's son (a great STORY), the Brewers wouldn't get ANY ink or play. So it cuts both ways. If the Brewers would make the playoffs a few years in a row, they would BECOME a story.

I love all the attention on the Cubs. It's our fixation with mediocrity in every facet of our society. Our complete satisfaction with the incompetent or the stupid or the trashy is right in keeping with the cultural impetus.

I know that's what journalists say they do, but there is usually a lot of borderline dishonesty in that statement, or at least plain laziness. To the extent they do root for "the story" I firmly beleive far too many journalists root for the EASY story. The Cubs, win or lose, are an easy story, and they carry the added benefit of playing in a large market and having a large national fanbase.

To me a good story is what you make it. I don't mean to just pick on teh journalists: they only provide an overwhelimngly simple audience with simple, easy to follow stories. A good writer makes good stories accessible, regardless of how 'difficult' those stories are. From my admittedly biased perspective, a very young and talented team, made up of 'homegrown' talent, playing in a city that hasn't seen winning baseball in a long time winning the division is just as good a story as is the store-bought Cubs finally doing something. And it's certianly a better story than the Cubs losing.
