Red-Hot Iribarren Comes Through in Clutch

Hernan Iribarren singled in the go-ahead run in a two-run ninth rally that lifted Huntsville to a 3-1 win over Mississippi Friday night in the opener of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars improved to 24-17 in the second half and lengthened their lead over Chattanooga in the North Division to a game and a half, while the Braves slumped to 14-27 in the second half and 13 ½ games behind front-running Jacksonville in the South Division. The Stars squared the season series at three games apiece.

Jose Ascanio, who just returned to the M-Braves after five days in the big leagues with Atlanta, took over on the hill in the ninth and issued a four-pitch walk to leadoff man Steve Moss, who moved to second base on an Alcides Escobar sacrifice bunt and to third on a Mel Stocker single. Iribarren, with Stocker going, ripped a line drive single to right field to deliver Moss to break the deadlock and collect his third hit of the game. Pinch-hitter Ryan Crew followed with a single to score Stocker to stretch the lead to two and drive in his fourth run in a pinch-hitting role. Luis Pena tossed a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the win and earn his sixth save in eight chances with the Stars.

Brendan Katin led off the second inning with a single, moved to second base on a Moss single and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Escobar. Stars' starter Corey Thurman struck out before Iribarren walked to load the bases and Michael Brantley walked to force in Katin with the game's first run. Adam Heether led off the third with a double, moved to third base on a Lou Palmisano fly out but was thrown out at the plate on a one-hop throw by left fielder Matt Young after he caught Katin's liner. The Stars lined out into three inning-ending double plays and have hit into 14 twin-killings in their last six games.

Diory Hernandez led off the home fourth with a single, sped to third on a Carl Loadenthal base hit and scored to tie the game on a sacrifice fly by Isaiah Ka'aihue, who knocked in his first run since joining the Braves. The Stars had a chance to take the lead in the fifth but wasted a leadoff triple by Iribarren, who has collected multiple hits in eight of his last 10 starts. Brantley grounded out to first base and Steve Sollmann walked before Heether lined out to center field and Sollmann, who was breaking on a 3-2 pitch, was doubled off at first base to end the frame.

Robert Hinton earned the win with two scoreless innings, his first victory since April 18th at home against Jacksonville. Thurman lasted six innings, his longest outing of the season, yielding a lone run on four hits, walking one and punching out a season-high seven. The Stars won a game started by Thurman for the first time since his first turn June 4 at Chattanooga.

The series continues Saturday night with left-hander Derek Miller taking the hill for the Stars against Braves' right-hander Ryan Baerlocher. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com

Huntsville Box Score:

Both Hernan Iribarren and Adam Heether continue their hot hitting, particularly Iribarren, who adds yet another 3-hit game, his third in the past week. Corey Thurman, Robert Hinton and Luis Pena all with very solid pitching performances this evening. Let's hope Hinton's scoreless 2-inning stint is the beginning of a strong final full month of the season for an otherwise disappointing year.

Huntsville Game Log:

Iribarren causing problems in the first inning, but the Stars fail to bring him home. The way the first three innings started, the Stars could've/should've scored a lot more than 3 runs in this game. Fortunately Iribarren was golden from the very beginning to the very end.

With all the great pitching so far this year in Helena, a game like this was bound to happen... wow.

Final: West Virginia 4, Rome 7

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER RALLY FALLS SHORT

After falling behind 5-0 on Friday night at State Mutual Stadium, the West Virginia Power came back and trailed by a run after six innings, but the Rome Braves scored a pair of insurance runs late in the game and took the first game of the series 7-4.

The Braves did all of their damage in the first inning with two outs. After Luis Ramirez retired the first two batters, he allowed a double to Jon Mark Owings and issued back to back walks to Tyler Flowers and Brandon Hicks before Chase Fontaine ripped a three run triple. Fontaine scored later in the inning on Danny Brezeale's single. Owings doubled again in the second inning and scored Yohan Silva.

Brent Brewer and Andrew Lefave both doubled and scored in the third. Lefave's two-bagger plated Brewer and Lefave scored on Taylor Green's Sacrifice Fly. Andy Bouchie ripped an RBI single in the seventh and Steve Chapman scored later in the sixth on a balk. Rome added their first insurance run in the seventh when Phil Britton scored on Hicks's Sacrifice Fly and in the eighth inning Yohan Silva hit his ninth homer of the season.

Jared Shaffer (1-0) allowed a pair of runs on four hits in three innings of relief to get the win, Ryne Reynoso (4) pitched two scoreless innings to secure the save and Luis Ramirez was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over three innings. J.T. King provided three scoreless innings of relief for the Power.

The Power fell to 67-42 overall and 19-22 in the second half, while the Braves improved to 51-60 overall and 22-19 in the second half with the win. Andrew Lefave was the only Power player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium on Saturday night. The Power will start right hander Alex Periard (5-4, 3.39) and the Braves will counter with right hander Jamie Richmond (5-5, 3.09). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

West Virginia Box Score:

Rome gets after Power starter Luis Ramirez, who hasn't been pitching many innings as of late, early in this one. Lefave keeps on hitting with another pair of hits, while Brent Brewer adds another extra-base hit (a double) to his impressive first full professional season.

West Virginia Game Log:

The Power had legitimate chances to have much bigger innings than they did in the 2nd and 6th innings, with multiple runners on with less than 2 outs. The Power were close after six, making those opportunities stand out even more, but Rome put it away with 2 more runs late.

Final: Helena 6, Great Falls 12

Helena Box Score:

The Gindl-LaPorta-Lucory middle of the lineup that Toby referred to above goes 5 for 11 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Gindl continues to rake and is a doubles machine, with 2 more in this game. Jose Garcia with an impressive 10-2 groundout to flyout ratio despite giving up 5 ER in 5 innings of work. The bullpen doesn't fare much better in this blowout.

Helena Game Log:

You can't get this from the game log, but from listening to much of this game, Zealous Wheeler made some really nice plays at shortstop this evening. Not much to say other than that in this one.

Final: Nashville 3, Portland 4

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Beavers Edge Sounds In Last At-Bat, 4-3

Brian Myrow delivered a one-out, bases-loaded single against Greg Aquino to give the Portland Beavers a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Friday evening at PGE Park.

It was the third time in three nights that the game between the clubs was decided with a ninth-inning run. Portland registered a last at-bat 4-3 win in Wednesday's series opener before Gabe Gross belted a ninth-inning homer to give the Sounds a 1-0 victory on Thursday.

With the loss, Nashville (68-45) had its lead reduced to 6 ½ games over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Catcher Mike Rivera (2-for-4) gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a leadoff solo homer against Portland starter Roger Deago. The blast to left was the backstop's 15th of the season. Nashville doubled its lead to 2-0 later in the frame when Chris Barnwell reached on a two-our ground-rule double and scored when Ozzie Chavez followed with an RBI single.

The Beavers got a run back in the fourth against Nashville starter Zach Jackson when former Sound Frank Menechino singled with one out and scored on Craig Stansberry's subsequent RBI double to right.

Portland grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth against Jackson. Centerfielder Yordany Ramirez led off the inning with a game-tying solo homer to left, his third longball of the season. Terrmel Sledge followed with a single and scored the go-ahead run later in the frame on Hiram Bocachica's one-out RBI single.

The Sounds rallied to knot the contest at 3-3 in the ninth when pinch-hitter Drew Anderson and Ozzie Chavez posted back-to-back doubles against Portland reliever Jared Wells, who suffered his second blown save of the year. Anderson's double extended his hitting streak to eight games, the longest active streak by a Nashville player.

Wells (3-7) backed into the victory as a result of the late Beavers rally after giving up the lead in the top of the frame. Aquino (2-2) was saddled with the loss.

Second baseman Rickie Weeks went 1-for-3 in his first game with the Sounds after being optioned from Milwaukee on Wednesday.

The teams wrap up the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT finale on Saturday. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (8-2, 3.33) will man the bump for the Sounds to face rehabbing southpaw Shawn Estes (NR) of Portland.

Nashville Box Score:

The Sounds lose a tough one late, especially since they scored a run in the top of the 9th to tie the game. Callix Crabbe continues to get on base at the top of the lineup while catcher Mike Rivera adds his 15th home run of the season. Zach Jackson continues his good/bat start trend, while former Sound Joe Thatcher tosses a scoreless 8th for the Beavers. Rickie Weeks with a hit, a walk, 2 strikeouts and a caught stealing in 4 plate appearances in his first start since being sent down.

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_08_03_nasaaa_poraaa_1

Nashville Game Log:

RHP Greg Aquino has been pretty solid over the last month, but has an ugly 9th inning that is far too reminiscent of the Brewers late-inning antics from their most recent road trip. Not sure how a batter can be picked off and caught stealing on the same play, but Weeks leading off the 6th with a walk could have led to bigger and better things.

I'd like to say I would be excited to stay up to provide the Baby Brewers info, but they're getting pasted by the Baby Friars, 22-3 right now. Not that I'm surprised by that or anything.

As thorough as the link report is, the details on this game definitely will be posted either overnight or tomorrow morning, even if they don't deserve to be...

Thanks for letting me get my Yuku on-the-job training in.

Joe Thatcher faced his old Nashville squad Friday night:

Nashville Top 8th

  • - Pitcher Change: Joe Thatcher replaces Adrian Burnside, batting 9th.
  • - Rickie Weeks strikes out swinging.
  • - Mike Rivera grounds out, pitcher Joe Thatcher to first baseman Brian Myrow.
  • - Andy Abad strikes out swinging.

And RHP Marino Salas deserves a mention for his three-inning scoreless outing for the Sounds.

Manatees outlast Rays

Ben Stanczyk and two other relievers combined on eight hitless frames as Brevard County beat visiting Vero Beach, 3-2, in 15 innings on Friday.

Travis Wendte entered in the eighth and retired six straight batters before Patrick Ryan overcame three walks in the 10th. He pitched a perfect 11th and Stanczyk (6-1) fanned four and walked two over the final four frames.

Starter David Welch allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven over six innings for the Manatees (22-16).

Devil Rays reliever Matthew Walker (3-8 ) walked J.R. Hopf to start the 15th and Darren Ford sacrificed. Walker uncorked a wild pitch and Lorenzo Cain lined a single to right field to end the marathon.

Cole Gillespie and Mat Gamel hit solo homers in the eighth and ninth, respectively, off Devil Rays reliever Kevin Lynn to force extra innings.

Brevard County's Mike Bell went 0-for-4 to end his 12-game home hitting streak.

Walker surrendered a run on a hit and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Vero Beach starter Jacob McGee scattered two hits, walked one and fanned 10 over seven shutout innings. After allowing a one-out single to Gamel in the fourth, the 6-foot-3 southpaw, who turns 21 on Monday, retired the final 11 batters he faced.

McGee, who leads the Florida State League with 145 strikeouts, lowered his ERA to 2.93 and extended his scoreless streak to 14 innings.

Patrick Cottrell had a run-scoring groundout in the first and Garrett Groce laced a solo homer in the third for the Devil Rays (10-27). -- Marc Jimenez/MLB.com

Brewers fall to Great Falls again

By Helena Independent Record Staff

GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls White Sox pounded the Helena Brewers Saturday night 12-6 behind a six-run seventh inning.

Jose Garcia got the start for Helena, allowing five runs off nine hits for his second loss of the year.

Great Falls first baseman Christian Marrero hit a triple and a home run, driving in two runs to move his average to .329 on the season. It was his sixth triple and his fifth home run this year.

Designated hitter Caleb Gindl had a single and a double while driving in two runs for the Brewers, who fell to 2-3 on the second half of the season.

Helena scored two in the top of the second inning, but Great Falls came back with three in the bottom.

In the third, Helena plated two again, only to have the White Sox tie the game in the bottom. After that, it was all Great Falls until the eighth.

Great Falls scored one in both the fifth and sixth innings before jumping all over relievers Casey Baron and Craig Langille for six runs.

Leroy Hunt pitched two fine innings of relief for the White Sox, allowing no runs on two hits. The Brewers had two men on with two outs in the seventh, following a triple by Scott McKnight and a walk to Zelous Wheeler, but Hunt got the league's leading hitter, Gindl, to ground out to first baseman Marrero to end the threat.

Helena put up a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Anthony Wycklendt.

In the ninth, the Brewers scored again when Gindl drove in Zelous Wheeler with his 13th double of the year.

Helena faces Great Falls again today, this time at home. The game is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) at Kindrick Legion Field.

Well, progress was being made there for a while...

Arizona Box Score:

19-year-old catcher Jesse D'Amico gets his first at-bat of the season, coming back from an undisclosed injury; this isn't the first time catcher Matt Czimskey has had to mop up, and once again, he pitches scoreless ball -- I can just about guarantee that the Brewers have the best mop-up position players of any organization, they always seem to have ERA's of 0.00...
