Donovan Hand really effective in his second start, but WV gets shut out. Lots of balls in play with Hand, but he seems to have an idea out there how to pitch. Boy, has Yohannis Perez knocked the rust off. Gamel continues to rake it, with Ford and Cain still quite interesting. Errecart and Gillespie are a puzzle(if we can only read box scores), but still look quite interesting.

Donovan throws about 90 with a jerky motion...they were hitting him pretty hard tonight, but were unable to make anything of it...i think he's a more advanced pitcher than sally ball, but he doesnt project weel without much stuff...his fastball certainly didnt have the wicked movement of periards...

Brewers lose to Great Falls

By Great Falls Tribune Staff

GREAT FALLS - The Great Falls White Sox won their last meeting of the Pioneer League's first round against the Helena Brewers last Sunday, and they repeated the feat Thursday night at Centene Stadium.

The Sox' 5-4 victory wasn't quite as impressive as the 19-9 romp over the Brewers last Sunday, but it counts just the same. Dale Paiml belted a double to the gap in right-center to score Dale Mollenhauer with the winning run in the 10th inning.

The victory gave the White Sox a 2-2 record in the second half, same as the Brewers.

The Sox scored the game's first run on Andrew Mead's grounder in the first inning. Helena tied it in the fourth on Matt LaPorta's solo homer, his second long fly of the season.

The Brewers went on top 2-1 in the fifth, but Great Falls tallied twice in the bottom of the inning as Salvador Sanchez tripled and scored on Jim Gallagher's sacrifice fly. Lyndon Estill doubled home the go-ahead run. Helena scored twice in the eighth to knock ace reliever Wander Perez out of the game, but the Sox knotted it up on an RBI single by Paiml in the bottom of the eighth.

The Northern Division rivals battle again here tonight, then they'll meet again Saturday in Helena.

Helena Box Score:

Looks like Evan Anundsen's going to get his ground balls (9-to-3) every single time out; R.J. Seidel with an inning in a welcome return, first outing since July 5th...

Final: Columbus (Devil Rays) 2, West Virginia 0

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

CATFISH BLANK POWER

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish shutout the West Virginia Power for the second time in three days as they took the final game of the series with a 2-0 victory over the Power at Golden Park on Thursday night.

The Catfish took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Nevin Ashley's base hit scored John Matulia. In the fifth inning Cesar Suarez plated the final run with a two-out RBI single to score Desmond Jennings.

West Virginia had plenty of chances of score. They put at least one runner on base in the first eight innings. Four times in the first six innings they left runners stranded in scoring position but Wade Townsend continued to pitch his way out of trouble.

The Power was held to just four hits, all singles. Charlie Fermaint and Andrew Lefave were the only two Power players to reach base more than once.

Taylor Green, Lefave and Andy Bouchie singled off Townsend and Brent Brewer added a base hit for the Power.

Townsend (6-9) pitched six scoreless innings of three-hit ball and struck out three to get the win, Neal Frontz (14) got the save and Donovan Hand (1-1) was tagged with the loss, despite a strong outing, allowing just two runs on nine hits over six innings. Jose Romero pitched two perfect innings out of the bullpen. The Power bullpen has tossed ten consecutive scoreless innings.

The Power fell to 67-42 overall and 19-22 in the second half, while the Catfish improved to 64-45 overall and 23-16 in the second half with the win. The shutout marked the second time this season that West Virginia has been held scoreless twice in the same series.

The Power will begin a four game series against the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium on Friday night. The Power will start left hander Luis Ramirez (1-1, 5.37) and the Braves will counter with right hander Dan Curtis (2-5, 6.04). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Four times the Power got the leadoff man on as well - ugh; Wade Townsend's three wild pitches tried to aid the Power bats, but no dice...

Thursday's Helena KCAP Audio Pre-Game Interview with RHP Wes Etheridge of UC-Irvine:

Be sure you're on the August 2nd archive, go to the 11:00 minute mark:

The 12th rounder has struggled, surprisingly, and will be pretty much shut down the rest of the way with a lot of innings on his arm at this point -- he's fatigued, "throwing a brick instead of a baseball".

Late Gross Homer Leads Sounds Past Beavers

PORTLAND, Ore. - Gabe Gross belted his first home run as a Sound in the top of the ninth inning to propel Nashville to a 1-0 victory over the Portland Beavers on Thursday evening at PGE Park.

Gross' one-out blast off Scott Cassidy secured the league-leading ninth shutout victory of the year for Nashville, which maintained its season-best 7 ½ game division lead over Iowa, which won earlier in the evening.

Three Sounds pitchers combined on the five-hitter in a game that was a pitcher's duel for most of the evening.

R.A. Dickey worked seven scoreless innings for Nashville, tossing 122 pitches in the outing. He allowed five hits while walking five batters and striking out seven. The Nashville native continued his recent dominance, lowering his ERA to 1.80 (12 ER / 60.0 IP) over his last nine starts.

Mitch Stetter (1-0) worked a perfect eighth and earned the victory as the beneficiary of Gross' late heroics. Luther Hackman notched his team-leading 15th save by retiring the Beavers in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Left-hander Matt Teague was impressive for Portland while making his Triple-A debut in a spot start. After allowing a leadoff double to Callix Crabbe and walking Gabe Gross to start the game, Teague retired the next 14 Nashville batters in order through the fifth inning before exiting the contest.

Jason Rakers (2.0 IP) and Jared Wells (1.0 IP) followed Teague in keeping Nashville off the scoreboard until the Sounds finally broke through against Cassidy (2-3), who took the loss one night after notching a victory in Portland's last at-bat win in Wednesday's series opener.

Drew Anderson doubled in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games for the Sounds. Callix Crabbe (2-for-4) recorded the lone multiple-hit effort for Nashville.

The teams continue their series with another 9:05 p.m. CT meeting on Friday evening. Left-hander Zach Jackson (9-7, 4.69) will take the hill for Nashville looking to snap a five-start winless stretch. Portland will counter with southpaw Roger Deago (1-2, 7.29).

Brevard County starter Chris Cody has been battling a sore elbow, so tonight's effort only dampened things further.

Nice job by the Manatees' radio team with a Manager John Tamargo interview detailing the situation with that and all the rainouts --
