If Yost were to be fired after the season, whom would you choose as a replacement?

BREWCREW5

LaRussa would be such a coup, he would be one of the few guys that I think is markedly better than Yost. Otherwise I don't see any incentive in getting rid of Ned. Definitely one of the greatest and smartest managers ever, and he's one of the few that will go against the grain and not be afraid of people's reaction.

But I would never want Ozzie-ball or Girardi's Parade of Exploding Arms to make a stop in Milwaukee.

I also would be interested in Cito Gaston. The guy won two WS titles and nobody offers him another job? Retreads who never even sniffed a WS got second chances when Cito did not.

If Cito's up to the job I'd find him a very interesting pick.

Tony LaRussa is such an over rated manager. He is 500 in the world series and has played some of the worst teams in the Series that people can recall. I still can not figure out how the Tigers lost to the Cards last year.

Is Tom Treblhorn even in baseball these days? His style of playing, being agressive on the bases, bunting, small ball, would not be a good fit for our current roster.

I would assume that if we bring in somebody from outside the organization, they would want to bring in their own staff. If you want to get rid of Yost and get a veteran manager, are you also prepared to lose Maddux and all the other coaches? I'm not sure I like that idea.

Of everything I've read in this thread, Tony Gywnn Sr. is the most intriguing option. Obvious connection to his son, HOF status demands respect, classy and beloved by all who know him.

I like Girardi, I can't make myself blame him for 'ruining' the Marlins staff. IMO, that has to fall on the GM. A manager has 25 guys in his dugout/bullpen, and a mandate to win as many of 162 games as he can. If, for instance, the Brewers don't want Yo and Parra to exceed 'x' innings, get them off the ML roster when they reach 'x', don't leave them in the dugout and expect the manager to play 23 v 25 against the other team.

Cito Gaston is an idea, but he won with VERY veteran teams in Toronto, there's a much different dynamic here, and he's been out of the dugout for a while.

If the "Hargrove lost a power struggle" theory is valid, he becomes a compelling option, otherwise stay away.

I would also consider going after a current manager having success with another team, like a Charlie Manuel in Philly...I have to think that the objective mind sees Milwaukee as a superior environment on a number of levels to places like Philly, Colorado (Hurdle) or Arizona (Melvin). Those last two have been in place for 3-4 years now, so perhaps a change of scenery is a palatable option to both them personally and their organizations.

I also like the idea of trying to replicate Billy Martin via DNA/cloning, so consider my thoughts in that light. =)

this guy would be worth every penny it would take to get him also...

A baseball manager is a necessary evil.

Baseball is a simple game. If you have good players and if you keep them in the right frame of mind then the manager is a success.

Casey knew his baseball. He only made it look like he was fooling around. He knew every move that was ever invented and some that we haven't even caught on to yet.

Good seasons start with good beginnings.

I don't believe a manager ever won a pennant. Casey Stengel won all those pennants with the Yankees. How many did he win with the Boston Braves and Mets?

Sparky Anderson

I don't want to embarrass any other catcher by comparing him to Johnny Bench.

I only had a high school education and believe me, I had to cheat to get that.

I understand people who boo us. It's like going to Broadway show, you pay for your tickets and expect to be entertained. When you're not, you have a right to complain.

Sparky Anderson

If I ever find a pitcher who has heat, a good curve, and a slider, I might seriously consider marrying him, or at least proposing.

If I hear Bowie Kuhn say just once more he's doing something for the betterment of baseball, I'm going to throw-up.

If you have to choose between power and speed and it often turns out you have to make that choice, you've got to go for speed.

It's a terrible thing to have to tell your fans, who have waited like Detroit's have, that their team won't win it this year. But it's better than lying to them.

Sparky Anderson

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year.

My idea of managing is giving the ball to Tom Seaver and sitting down and watching him work.

The only reason I'm coming out here tomorrow is the schedule says I have to.

The only thing I believe is this: A player does not have to like a manager and he does not have to respect a manager. All he has to do is obey the rules.

Sparky Anderson

The players make the manager, it's never the other way.

They say the first World Series is the one you remember most. No, no no. I guarantee you don't remember that one because the fantasy world you always dreamed about is suddenly real.

You give us the pitching some of these clubs have and no one could touch us, but God has a way of not arranging that, because it's not as much fun.

I've mentioned this before, but whatever happened to Davey Johnson? He did pretty well with the NYM, Reds, O's, and Dodgers: his .564 winning percentage is 13th all-time (better than anyone active, including Bobby Cox), and he won divisional crowns with three different teams. (Maybe the knock on him was that he had good teams that under-achieved?) An added bonus would be that he could teach Rickie how to play 2B.

I like the idea of having an older guy with a proven a track record of winning. If I were Mark A., the Brewers' recent luck with first-timers would push me toward managerial graybeard.

Just some numbers to think about:

First 4 seasons as managers:

Joe Torre 66-96, 63-99, 67-95, 41-62(1981 Strike Season)

Bobby Cox 69-93, 66-94, 81-80, 50-56(1981)

Jim Leyland 64-98, 80-82, 85-75, 74-88

Just pointing out that some of the best managers need some time to figure out the job and to build what their vision is.

Although not everyone agrees with Yost's decisions, let's remember we are still in 1st place regardless of the funk the team is in right now. It beats the last 14 years of no hope. And it's a heck of a lot better than the last couple seasons of thinking we have a possible shot at the wild card because we're only 5 games back and only have to jump 8 other teams.

I guess I should have looked him up on wiki rather than baseball reference.
Baseball-Reference does show death dates, but it has to cross your mind to look for them. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Leyland's Tigers have been the worst team in baseball over the past 3 weeks, guess he should be fired too.

I could care less who the manager is personally, but I think its funny that every time we go through a bad stretch this stuff comes up. I'll give you a hint, when your team gives up 30 runs over two games its not the managers fault, its the players~. When your closer blows a 3 run lead in the 9th its the players fault not the manager. Seems like fans just enjoys blaming everything bad that happens on the manager and giving credit for anything good that happens to the players. Same can be said for any team that isn't playing good ball at the time.
