My beef with the Cubs' arrogance

SeriesFinale

This could possibly fit into any number of threads, most likely the vent--I say that because I can't imagine pople being able to constructively agree or disagree with this--but I feel it's worth saying:

Why is it that Cubs fans seem to think their "suffering" is so important, or at least more so than other teams?

Yes, they haven't made a World Series since 1945. A harsh realm which I enjoy pointing out to certain friends on occasion. But if the average baseball fan is about 40 or so, their fan base is hardly alone in not seeing a World Series in their lifetime.

Playoffs? As of right now, about half the league has had a longer drought, including many (of course including our own Milwaukee Brewers) who haven't seen the playoffs in three, four, five, EIGHT times that long.

Of course these droughts aren't the fault of the Cubs or their fans. If only, right?

And I know there are Cubs fans in nursing homes (or--and I do say this seriously--sadly, the grave) that haven't seen the World Series.

But spare me the self-flagellation about your suffering, Cubs fan--as a Brewers' fan I'd have killed for the last 25 years the Cubs have had, and that includes Bartman and the rest. You guys have had it relatively very good. You absolutely do not corner the market on suffering.

I do say this considering I'd rather they be jerks about losing than jerks about winning. Either way, hopefully this year won't add to our own personal misery.

Edit #3: I wish I could blame Cubs fans on me not being able to figure out how to blue-color text on Yuku, but I'll blame that on the beer instead

Most of that "haven't been to a WS since 45/won since 08" stuff is brought up by the media. Or by fans of other teams.

I wouldn't really say that the Cubs fans are particularly cocky at the moment, we're just enjoying the fact that our team has been playing amazing for the past 2 months.

The only time I tend to bring it up is when speculating on reasons Cubs fans are particularly obnoxious about winning, though I'm aware that doesn't come close to justifying it. The magnitude of the futility certainly adds a unique flavor to success that I never experienced with the 90s Bulls or last year's Bears, but which I have experienced at every single prolonged stretch of success the Cubs have had in my lifetime.

We Cubs fans certainly don't corner the market on suffering (the team they're currently playing can stake a pretty strong claim there as well), but the size of the fanbase and the media circus (ie the incessant talk about curse and bartman and 69 and 08 etc etc) and the fact that their drought is current all contribute to the perception.

We're also well aware that there are teams like the Pirates who are currently slated to designate half of their 2008 payroll to employ Cesar Izturis, Jack Wilson, and Matt Morris. That's suffering on a level that any sports fan has a hard time competing with.

Man, every time I read that I laugh harder. Hahaha.

I think, as Brewers fans, you have to not let this stuff get under your skin. You guys have a very good team. If you don't make it this year, so what? You have good/great years ahead of you. Many Cubs fans, including myself, really respect you guys and wish for the best. Who knows how this year will turn out? It's certainly not over yet. Keep your heads up, and try not to freak out Cubs-fan style.

I think the reason why most Brewers fans hate chubs fans, is that chubs fans think they are god gift to baseball, one thing chubs fans need to learn when they go see there team on the road, they need to show respect to the home city and there team, they don't need to boo the other team and they don't need to be obnioqus, i have talked with fans of other teams and i heard that chub fans act that way in every city, to me that is very sad. Personally if I would go see the Brewers in another city i would not be rude.

I agree with that. But right now I just see the Crew playing so horribly and it's so disheartening. But you're right, we shouldn't get all fatalistic. We're lucky enough to finally have a good team. It just seemed like we were being given the division crown for so long.

Living in Chicago, this is what I primarily see. Then again, there are some obnoxious Cubs fans out there. Of course much of this is just because a lot of sports fans get too...fanatical and let their joy be steered by their teams' performances (All Brewer fans are certainly not saints). But it's not the true-blue Cub fans I think most people have a problem with. My sister is part of a season ticket package at Wrigley (she's a turncoat) and there are guys who sit in that section who are great and are at every inning of every game, even in seasons like last years. I have no problem with them. I just don't understand the people who have to come up to me and give me a hard time when I'm wearing my Brewer cap or something. To me those people reek of "I just moved to Chicago and I want to prove I am a total Cubs fan". But because Chicago is a big city, there are a lot of those people around unfortunately. And unfortunately (for us) they allow the Cubs to overpay for guys like Soriano - though he's earning his money this year.

I think there's 2 branches of Cubs fan

1. Cubs fans. They enjoy baseball and their team. They could care less about all the suffering junk and respect the game. Most people don't think they exist because they're the ones you don't notice.

2. The people who found out it's fashionable to be a Cubs fans. It seems like it's almost a status thing and they see a ballgame as an excuse to get blasted. They mis-pronounce Theriot and have no idea who Marmol is. They're loud and disrespectful. I imagine the true fans hate them just as much as we do. They're the ones who love to talk about how bad they've had it and blah, blah, blah....

Just my opinion.

*to be fair, I've noticed a HUGE influx of obnoxious fans at Brewer games this year. Their behavior is not better than the obnoxious Cubs fans which is what made me think of this breakdown.

I agree 100%. And it seems to me though that most are #2. And I always sit my the #2's when I go to a Crew vs Cubs game at MP.
