Final: West Virginia 9, Columbus (Devil Rays) 1

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

BREWER HOMERS TWICE IN POWER WIN

Brent Brewer homered twice and knocked in four runs as the Power won their first game of the road trip, defeating the Columbus Catfish 9-1 at Golden Park on Wednesday night.

John Alonso's two-out double scored Chuckie Caufield and Taylor Green to give the Power the early lead in the top of the second. Jairo Delarosa smacked his first of two doubles in the bottom of the third inning and plated the lone run for Columbus. Alonso struck again in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single.

Brewer's first home run of the night was a solo shot over the wall in left field in the top of the fifth. In the eighth inning the Power scored five runs to pull away. Kenny Holmberg knocked in the first run with a pinch-hit RBI single. During the next at-bat Charlie Fermaint brought Brad Miller in with a sacrifice fly and Brewer capped the big inning with a three-run homer, his eighth of the season.

Jeremy Jeffress (7-4) pitched six solid innings, allowing just a run on four hits with five strikeouts to get the win while Will Kline (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Omar Aguilar and Shawn Ferguson combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief.

The Power improved to 67-41 overall and 19-21 in the second half, while the Catfish fell to 63-45 overall and 22-16 in the second half with the loss. Alonso went 2-for-2 with a run scored, three RBI and walked twice. Brewer went 2-for-5, scored twice and knocked in four. It was Brewer's first multi-homerun game of season.

The Power will finish the four game series against Columbus Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Donovan Hand (1-0, 1.80) and the Catfish will counter with right hander Wade Townsend (5-9, 5.01). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (6:00 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Tremendous season for Jeremy Jeffress; John Alonso reaches all four plate appearances...

Gindl was caught stealing, again. Bum.

Seriously, the kid is superhuman. I know we aren't supposed to get our hopes up about the Helena guys, but I can't remember when a high school draftee did anything like this at that level. Well, let me break that down: I can't remember when anybody did something like this at Helena, and I can't remember when a high schooler put up a really exciting season there.

I mean, seriously, BA Prospect Hot Sheet: "holding his own"? "Holding his own"?!?

Jeffress rocks, and Brewer needed a game like this. I can't believe how good those two are already. If they stay healthy and develop at a healthy pace, they'll help the Brewers -- but can you imagine if one of them seriously takes off?

Also, props to the Hurricane. He's been in danger of losing relevance for a while, but lately he looks like he's trying to prove something.

Greg.

Gindl goes 4-4 in a nice win, I told myself I wouldn't get excited about R+ performances anymore, but he's only 18 and he's destroying the league like we've never seen done before. Well actually Salome was pretty dominant but was 19 at the time, he did hit for more power though.

Salome in the Pioneer League:

37 Games, 159 ABs, 66 Hits, 17 Doubles, 8 HR for a .415/.469/.673 and a whopping 1142 OPS.

Gindl in the Pioneer League thus far:

26 Games, 101 ABs, 44 Hits, 10 Doubles, 3 Triples, 2 HR for a .436/.464/.653 and a 1117 OPS.

2 Different types of players, very similar results.

I just cannot express how impressed I've been with his performance thus far.

edit. Dang it, Greg beat me to it while I was digging up stats.... boohiss!

Narron Does It All in Stars' Narrow Victory

Sam Narron spun a complete-game four-hit shutout and knocked in the only run of the night in Huntsville's 1-0 win over Chattanooga in the last of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 23-17 in the second half and climbed into sole possession of first place in the North Division one game ahead of the Lookouts, who dipped to 22-18 in the second half. The Stars won for a second time in the series 1-0 and for a third time in the last six games between the teams.

Lou Palmisano led off the home fifth with a single, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Hernan Iribarren and to third on a base hit by Alcides Escobar before Narron chopped the first pitch of his at-bat into right field for a single and his first run batted in of the year. Steve Moss then grounded into a double play, the 11th turned by the Lookouts in the series, to end the frame.

Tyrell Godwin singled with one out in the fourth and reached third base with two outs after an errant pickoff throw by Narron but was left there when Mike Griffin struck out to end the inning. The only other threat for the visitors was in the seventh when Enrique Cruz led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a Caonobe Cosme ground out. Narron then retired Godwin on a ground out to first, with the infield in and with the second baseman Iribarren covering, and got Craig Tatum to fly out to right to end the inning.

Narron struck out six and has now gone 35 2/3 innings over his last five turns without issuing a walk. He improved to 6-6 by winning his third straight decision and has not lost since June 23 at Tennessee. Matt Maloney, in his first Southern League after being traded to the Reds by the Phillies, was the hard luck loser after fanning 10 and yielding the game's lone run on six hits over seven frames.

The Stars travel to Jackson, Mississippi on Friday to open a five-game set with the Mississippi Braves, who they have not seen since the first series of the season. Huntsville will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Braves' right-hander Moises Hernandez. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Helena 3, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 2

Helena Site Game Summary:

Brewers Rebound to Top Osprey

HELENA - One night after being shut out, the Helena offense bounced back to make the most of three runs as the Brewer pitching staff allowed just five hits. Brewer starter Roque Mercedes tossed eight innings of two-run baseball as Helena defeated the Missoula Osprey 3-2.

Missoula took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Caleb Gindl had the first of his four hits in the bottom half of the inning when he stroked a no-doubt solo home run to right field cutting the deficit in half. Helena did not score again until the fifth inning. Zelous Wheeler and Curt Rindal led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Matt Cline was hit by a pitch Eric Farris drew a walk to drive in a run and tie the score at 2-2.

Mercedes allowed just one hit after the third inning for the Brewers. He left after eight solid innings of pitching; Mercedes struck out five and did not walk a batter.

The Brewers added the eventual winning run in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Gindl and Jonathan Lucroy began the inning with back-to-back doubles; Lucroy's two-base knock brought Gindl home for the third run of the game. Brewers pitching held the 3-2 lead for the rest of the game.

Nick Tyson entered in the ninth to record his first professional save. Tyson did not allow a hit and struck out one.

Offensively, Gindl finished 4-for-4 with one RBI. Others that finished with multiple hits included Rindal (2-for4) and Wheeler (2-for-3). Lucroy had the only other hit for Helena.

The win ensures Helena (28-13, 2-1) will remain atop the Pioneer League Division second-half standings. The Brewers will look to improve upon that record Thursday at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central) at Great Falls when they take on the White Sox.

I should add, ever since I bagged on Mercedes, he's been lights out as if to prove what a dolt I truly am. I'm left wondering if R+ is just that much of a drop off that it's easy for him now, or he's actually found something. I guess we'll have to wait until next year to find out.

edit. And Mass is having fun posting with a different avatars for different updates I see... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Final: Portland (Padres) 4, Nashville 3

Sounds Open Road Trip With 4-3 Loss

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Nashville Sounds, 4-3, on Wednesday evening at PGE Park in the opener of a four-game series.

With Sounds closer Luther Hackman on the hill, a miscommunication between shortstop Chris Barnwell and leftfielder Brad Nelson allowed a pop-up off the bat of Peter Ciofrone to drop in cleanly to open the bottom of the ninth. Ciofrone reached second on the play, charged as an error to Barnwell. Two outs later, Craig Stansberry ripped a 1-0 Hackman offering to left for a game-ending RBI single.

With the loss, Nashville (67-44) dropped to just 11-18 in series openers this season but maintained its season-best 7 ½ game lead over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

The Sounds continued their season-long tradition of fast starts by taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Beavers starter Mike Thompson. Callix Crabbe opened the contest with a single to right, moves to third on a Gabe Gross single, and scored on Vinny Rottino's RBI knock to right.

Portland tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame stemming from a Gross misplay in right field. Yordany Ramirez led off by reaching second on Gross' error and later scored on one-out Brian Myrow RBI single to right.

Laynce Nix powered Nashville back in front when he led off the second inning with a solo homer to center off Thompson, the outfielder's 15th longball of the season.

AUDIO: Laynce Nix Home Run --

http://www.nashvillesounds.com/audio/2007/Highlight%208-1.mp3

Sounds first baseman Andy Abad got into the power act in the fourth, leading off the frame with a solo shot to right-center off Thompson to increase the visitors' lead to 3-1. The roundtripper was the veteran's ninth of the year.

Steve Bray allowed one unearned run on two hits over a season-high four innings in his spot start for the Sounds, lowering his ERA to 1.72 on the year.

Tim Dillard followed with two scoreless relief innings for Nashville before Portland knotted the contest against Marino Salas in the seventh.

Beavers catcher Pete LaForest greeted the right-hander by drilling his first pitch over the center field wall for his team-leading 27th home run of the year, pulling Portland within 3-2. Former Sound Frank Menechino and Ciofrone followed with back-to-back doubles, the second of which tied the score at 3-3.

Later in the frame, Greg Aquino inherited a two-out, bases-loaded jam from Salas and caught Myrow looking to escape without further damage.

Portland reliever Scott Cassidy (2-2) picked up the victory after working one scoreless relief inning.

Hackman (1-1) took a hard-luck loss for his first defeat of the year after surrendering the game-winning run in unearned fashion in his two-thirds of an inning.

The teams continue their series with a 9:05 p.m. CT meeting on Thursday. Nashville native R.A. Dickey (8-5, 4.06) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Portland right-hander Robert Woodard, who will make his first PCL appearance of the year.

NARRON'S NIGHT

KNOCKS IN ONLY RUN TO BACK UP 4-HITTER

In contrast to last night's game, which got off on time (a rain shower delayed this game until 8 pm), tonight's game raced along nicely, ending with a grounder in the 9th to Alcides Escobar at a few minutes past 10 pm --- over a half-hour sooner than last night's despite the long delay......... This could only come from another 1-0 pitchers' duel, the second of this series. (This happened last year during the final series of the season, played against Birmingham at Hoover Met.)

Coming fresh from the Eastern League to make his debut with the Chattanooga Lookouts, Matt Maloney kept the Stars off-balance all night, baffling hitters with his curve, mixed in with a potion of fast balls and sliders. He struck out 10 for the 3rd time in just a little more than a month........ But as commanding as Maloney was in his Southern League debut, Sam Narron (2-0, 3.14 in July) was untouchable, scattering four hits and pitching his way out of a couple of jams.

Narron did it all tonight, committing one of the Stars' two errors, but also driving in the Stars' only run with a single through the right side, scoring Lou Palmisano who led off the 5th with a single to left.........Hernan Iribarren, who had two hits to raise his average over .280 for the first time since April 18, dragged a bunt in front of the mound, sending Palmisano to 2nd. Alcides Escobar then poked Maloney's first pitch to right sending Palmisano to third, setting up Narron's game-winning hit on the first pitch from Maloney........ Narron, the Stars' leading active hitter among pitchers with a .269 average, has now hit safely in three straight games, which no one had done since Tim Dillard last June.

Narron's efficiency was topped by his incredible contol last night --- using 94 pitches in this game (fewer than 10 in three different innings) and getting 74 of them over for strikes (78.8%).

He got himself into just two jams -- one of them of his own making. After Tyrell Godwin hit a sharp grounder through the middle for a one-out hit in the 5th, he tried to pick him off first after retiring Craig Tatum on a fly to right....... On his second attempt before throwing a pitch to Michael Griffin, he threw the ball into the bullpen, allowing Godwin to get to third, but he struck out Griffin on a 1-2 pitch to end the inning........ In the 7th, Narron once again allowed a Chattanooga runner to reach third........ Former Star Enrique Cruz lined a single to center to leadoff the inning, then stole 2nd on the first pitch to the next hitter, Caonabo Cosme. When Cosme hit a slow grounder to Escobar near the second base bag, Cruz took third....... Godwin then slapped a ground ball to the right side, a tough play for either Hernan Iribarren or Steve Sollmann, but Sollmann took the ball, too far away, however, to make the play at first, himself........ Fortunately, Iribarren is speedy and he was alert. He covered to toss from Sollmann to get the unusual 3-4 putout....... Narron got behind on Tatum, 3-and-1, but Tatum flied out to right to end the inning......... Narron, who did not walk a batter, seldom got behind hitters, and went full to just one hitter -- Enrique Cruz in the 1st inning, before striking him out.

Only two games are scheduled in the Southern League Thursday, while the Stars travel to Trustmark Park to play the Braves for the first time since the frigid opening of the season........ Most of what got the Braves to a first half division finish is gone now. The Braves are 14-26 and in last place in the Southern Division........ Friday, the Stars will send Corey Thurman against Moises Hernandez.

Mercedes, Brewers hold off Mavericks
By TOM STUBER, IR Sports Writer

Roque Mercedes ran rough for a few innings, but the Helena pitcher ran just "fine" after that to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 win over Missoula.

"The second inning was a little trouble tonight," Mercedes said, "I felt fine after I got a little more location on my fastball."

Fine enough to get the last 11 batters he faced and 15 of the last 16.

Mercedes pitched eight innings, allowing no walks and striking out five. He allowed loud doubles in the first two innings, but got out of trouble thanks to some Osprey baserunning gaffes.

Missoula (1-2) took a 2-0 lead in the second when Mercedes hit the leadoff batter and allowed a double to Chance Wheeless. Jimmy Pricipie then singled in a run and Gerardo Bustamonte drove in another with a fielder's choice groundout.

Mercedes coaxed Victor Estever to hit into a double play to end the threat relatively unscathed.

Caleb Gindl chipped in with a solo homer to right in the Helena (2-1) second to cut the lead in half. Helena scored a run on an RBI walk by Eric Farris to tie the game in the fifth. The Brewers took their only lead when Gindl, who went 4-for-4 doubled and scored on a Jonathon Lucroy double.

Gindl came into the game hitting a league-leading .436 and left with a .457 average.

"I had a bad day yesterday, so I just came in here looking to get a good pitch and try to hit it," he said.

Gindl followed his no-doubt homer with a flare to shallow center for a single.

"I'll take them broken bat singles all day," Gindl said.

He said he was looking for a fastball and got a changeup that he just kept his hands back on.

Missoula had a one-out double that could've been a triple in the first inning. The next batter flied out to left and the Osprey may have squandered a run.

The Osprey then had a leadoff double in the fifth go by the boards. Gerardo Bustamante bluffed back toward second on a softly hit grounder back to the mound. He then ill-advisedly took off for second on the throw to first and was thrown out easily at third by Helena first baseman Curt Rindal.

Helena had several chances to extend its lead, but scored just one run after loading the bases with one out. The Brewers then had runners at first and second with one out in the ninth only to see Gindl thrown out at home.

Eliza Wiley, Helena Independent Record Staff Photographer - Helena Brewers third baseman Zelous Wheeler makes the bare-handed grab for the throw out at first during the third inning of Wednesday night's game against Missoula. The Brewers won 3-2.

""Wow - Sam Narron" is right. In his last 10 outings he has a 2.63 ERA with 7 BB and 36 K in 54 IP, and that includes two blowups (6/16 & 7/2). 6/26 was a relief appearance, and not a great one, but outside of that he's only had one non-quality start since 6/15. Hopefully he is finally healthy and can compete for a spot next year if not provide some help in September if there is a roster spot open.

And Steve Bray with 4 shutout innings in a rare start... are they trying to stretch him out? Dude has nothing left to prove in the minors after the last two years. He may not have overpowering stuff, but as Matt Wise, Trevor Hoffman, and Eric Gagne have shown, if you have a great changeup you don't have to throw upper 90's to be a good relief pitcher.
