For those new this year to the Link Reports:

 

Things to remember about the Arizona Rookie League --

 

The first-half season games are played in late-morning sun; the second-half games are played in the evenings. It's hot either way, most games will list starting temperatures of 95 degrees plus.

 

Expect some wild linescores -- some football-type stores, high walk totals, high error totals, general scratch-your-head numbers. (Obviously, this guarantees a clean 2-1 game Saturday morning.)

 

Pitcher won-loss records are meaningless. Since so few starting pitchers go five innings with limited pitch counts, it's almost impossible for a starter to get anything much in the way of wins.

 

Attendance totals, particularly in Maryvale, will average around 15. That's not a misprint. Most of these kids will easily have had more in the stands at their high school games.

 

The kids signed prior to this year's draft have already been in Maryvale for over three months, and unofficial games take place regularly, both intrasquad, and against other organizations, so the coaches already know quite a bit about those players.

I'm drooling to see this kid in action after two years of waiting. It was a treat to see him in the spring box scores.

 

Perhaps, an injury? Good luck on finding out from the AZL, though, huh?

 

It's always fun learning who these kids are, though, especially the Latin American signees who we heard nothing about (which seems to be getting less and less each year, due to the diligent work of MassHaas).

21 walks and seven wild pitches in the 97 degree Arizona sun today, including seven walks and an HBP by still 18-year-old RHP Shane Hill, the Brewers 8th round pick last season; much more respectable lines for the Dominican trio that followed, including converted shortstop Harold Mejia; Miguel Vazquez is the Brewers 32nd round pick this season out of a Florida community college -- he was drafted in the 17th round in 2005 out of a New York City high school, but did not sign with Kansas City -- he reaches three times, homers, and drives in four in this game...

Stars Suffer Disappointing Loss to Finish Series with Smokies

 

Huntsville committed two costly errors and Tennessee?s bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to preserve a 2-1 win in the final of a six-game set Saturday night at Smokies Park. The Smokies took four out of six to begin the second half to improve to 40-34 overall, while the Stars dropped to 39-35 overall.

 

Steve Moss led off the game with a single, moved to second base on a ground ball out and scored on a single by Lou Palmisano to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. Huntsville scored in the first inning in four of the six games in the series but wound up losing three of those games. Sam Fuld and Issmael Salas started the home first with singles before Jake Fox hit a potential double play grounder to third base. Adam Heether fielded and threw to Hernan Iribarren for the force at second base but first baseman Steve Sollmann could not handle the relay throw, allowing Fox to reach safely and Fuld to score from third to tie the game.

 

Jorge Cortes singled with one out in the home fourth and advanced to second base with two outs when Iribarren mishandled a ground ball hit by Smokies? starter Paul Schappert. The inning continued and Sam Fuld made the Stars pay with a single to left field that plated Cortes with what turned out to be the winning run. Stars? starter Sam Narron suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 3-6 after giving up two unearned runs in six innings. He gave up seven hits, walked two and fanned three. Bo Hall and Robert Hinton each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

 

Billy Petrick worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings behind Schappert and was followed to the hill by Jerry Blevins, who retired both batters he faced. Jim Henderson took over in the ninth and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up singles to Brendan Katin and Hernan Iribarren. However, the right-hander squelched the threat by striking out Alcides Escobar to end the game and record his second save of the series and sixth of the season. The Stars have been held to three runs or fewer in 11 of their last 12 games.

 

The Stars return home on Sunday to begin a six-game series with Chattanooga, as right-hander Mark DiFelice will take the mound for Huntsville against Lookouts? left-hander Camilo Vazquez. DiFelice gets a spot start due to the doubleheader the Stars played earlier this week. Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener To Express, 6-1

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas ? The Nashville Sounds suffered a 6-1 loss to the Round Rock Express on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond in the opener of a four-game series.

 

With the defeat, the Sounds (43-32) suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since late May and fell out of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, dropping a half-game behind Iowa in the standings.

 

Round Rock starter Philip Barzilla (7-5) worked a complete game to earn the victory. The southpaw allowed one run on six hits over his nine innings of work.

 

The Sounds grabbed an early lead against the Express, plating the game?s first run in the top of the first inning. Tony Gwynn led off with a triple and scored two batters later on Laynce Nix?s RBI single off Barzilla.

Round Rock rallied for three runs against Sounds starter Chris Oxspring in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Former Brewer farmhand Danny Klassen (1993 - 1997) walked to open the frame and moved to second on a Cody Ransom single. Mark Saccamanno tied the contest with an RBI double to center that left runners on second and third. Two batters later, Danny Ardoin ripped an RBI double to left that scored Ransom with the go-ahead run. Nix gunned down Saccamanno at the plate as he attempted to score a second run on the play. Barzilla helped his own cause by driving in the third run of the inning when he followed with an RBI single off Jackson.

 

The Express added single runs in the fourth and sixth to increase the advantage to 5-1 before capping off the evening?s scoring on Josh Anderson?s two-out RBI triple in the eighth against Greg Aquino.

 

After the first inning, Nashville failed to advance another runner to second base until the ninth as Barzilla allowed only two hits from the second through eighth frames to keep the Sounds at bay.

 

Oxspring (6-4) had a four-game winning streak snapped as he suffered the loss for the Sounds. The right-hander surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings, walking two batters while striking out six.

 

The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. CT on Sunday evening. Left-hander Zach Jackson (8-3, 4.61) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Round Rock southpaw Mark McLemore (0-1, 3.05).

Flying Tigers thrash Manatees

 

William Rhymes and Ryan Roberson drove in three runs apiece to propel Lakeland over Brevard County, 13-5, on Saturday at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Rhymes reached base four times as the leadoff man, going 2-for-4 with two walks and a run scored. He hit a two-run single in the sixth inning and drove in Justin Justice with a groundout in the eighth.

 

Roberson's ground-rule double plated Cameron Maybin in the fifth. He added a two-run single in Lakeland's six-run sixth.

 

Wilkin Ramirez led off the fourth with his ninth homer as part of a two-hit night for the Flying Tigers (1-1).

 

Lakeland starter Angel Castro (1-0) got the win in his Florida State League debut, despite giving up five runs on 10 hits and three walks while punching out two in six innings.

 

Mat Gamel extended his league season-high hitting streak to 21 games with an RBI double as the Manatees (2-1) plated all their runs in the second.

POWER TAKE CARE OF KANNAPOLIS IN 13

 

In a game that took four hours, ten minutes and 13 innings to complete, the West Virginia Power came from behind to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 9-8 on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.

 

Kannapolis took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. John Anderson doubled in two, Andrew Lefave?s errant throw plated another and Archie Gilbert?s base hit accounted for the other run. West Virginia cut the lead in half on RBI doubles from Brad Miller and Lefave in the third. Kenny Holmberg doubled in a run in the fifth inning to make it a one run game but the Intimidators added to their lead on a solo home run from Mike Grace in the sixth.

 

Steve Chapman singled in a run in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game again, before a pair of West Virginia errors allowed Kannapolis to scored twice in the ninth inning. The Power hit five straight singles in the ninth inning and scored three times to tie the game. Lefave, Taylor Green and Jimmy Mojica all ripped RBI singles. Nobody scored again until Archie Gilbert singled in a run for Kannapolis in the 13th inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Mike Grace?s throwing error allowed Chuckie Caufield to score the tying run and Brad Miller?s base hit plated Charlie Fermaint to win it for the Power.

 

Omar Aguilar (6-1) got the victory, and Joe Winn (0-1) was tagged with the loss. West Virginia committed five errors, a season high.

 

The Power improved to 50-21 overall and 2-1 in the second half, and the Intimidators fell to 33-40 overall and 1-2 in the second half with the loss. Chuckie Caufield and Steve Chapman paced the Power with three hits while seven Power players had multi-hit games.

 

The Power will finish the four game series against the Intimidators Sunday evening. Left hander Mike Ramlow (3-2, 7.78) will start for the Power and Kannapolis will counter with right hander Faustino De Los Santos (4-2, 2.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM (4:05 Central).

Helena Loses Second in a Row

 

HELENA?Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning the Helena Brewers fell to the Great Falls White Sox for the second night in a row. With two outs and one runner on Brewer pinch-hitter Eric Newton came to the plate with a chance to tie things up. Instead White Sox pitcher Ronald Morales got a big strikeout to end the game.

 

The Brewers fell behind in the second inning 1-0 and later tied the game in the fourth inning, but the White Sox outscored Helena the rest of the way for a 4-2 Great Falls win.

 

Three consecutive singles from Brewers Jonathan Lucroy, Caleb Gindl, and Steffan Wilson tied the game at one apiece, but Helena failed to take a lead. During their ensuing at-bat the White Sox added a run in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 advantage.

 

Great Falls later added two more runs in the eighth inning. The Brewers tried to get things going in their half of the eighth and ninth innings, but could score only more run. Eric Farris hit a one-out triple to the right-centerfield alley during the eighth and Lucroy drove him in to cut the lead to 4-2. Helena advanced runners to second and third with one out, but an inning-ending double play quelled the threat.

 

With the loss Helena falls to 2-3 while Great Falls improves to 3-2. The Brewers will try to salvage the series with the White Sox when they take the field 4:05 PM Sunday (5:05 Central) against Great Falls.

Sox silence Brewers bats

By TOM COTTON, Helena Independent Record Sports Editor

 

Five games into the season, the Helena Brewers? pitching and defense is definitely ahead of its offense.

 

The Brewers? bats once again went into hibernation Saturday night as they fell 4-2 to the Great Falls White Sox.

 

Helena has scored just two runs in each of its last three games and they have won just one of those contests.

 

Great Falls had Aaron Poreda on the mound in Saturday?s game. Poreda, a 6-foot-6 left hander, was Chicago?s first-round pick earlier this month in the First Year Player Draft.

 

His fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s and he went to that pitch early and often against Helena.

 

The University of San Francisco product struck out five in his professional debut and didn?t give up a hit until the fourth inning.

 

?I was nervous,? Poreda said. ?There was a lot of hype and pressure on me so I wanted to turn up the heat. I do better when the pressure is on.?

 

The Brewers went down meekly in the first three innings, but finally broke through in the fourth.

 

A single by Jonathan Lucroy started a run of three straight singles.

 

The final hit in that string was a soft liner by Helena?s Steffan Wilson, which brought Lucroy home.

 

That tied the contest at 1-1.

 

The White Sox scored first when Christian Marerro hit an RBI double in the second.

 

Great Falls took the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Greg Paiml.

 

After that score, both teams? bullpens settled down until the last two innings.

 

The White Sox extended their lead in the eighth thanks to an RBI ground out by Josh Morgan and an RBI double by Marerro.

 

Great Falls, however, had to endure some nervous moments before closing out the win.

 

?We got better at bats later in the game,? said Helena manager Jeff Isom. ?No question, we have to get our bats going and we feel like we have the personnel to do that.?

 

In the eighth inning, Helena trailed 4-1 but looked like they could rally past the White Sox.

 

Eric Farris got the fans on their feet with one out, when he smacked a triple that landed at the base of the right-field wall.

 

He was brought home on a single by Lucroy, which was followed by a single by Caleb Gindl.

 

Gindl continued his hot start by going 3-for-4 in the contest and is hitting .444 after five games.

 

The 18-year-old from Pace, Fla., was in the cleanup spot for the Brewers on Saturday.

 

?That guy can swing the bat,? Isom said. ?He has made the adjustment to pro ball and he is an exciting kid to see play.?

 

The eighth-inning rally died, however, when the White Sox turned a double play to end the threat.
