5/23/2004 - Brewers (Davis) @ Pirates (K. Wells)

The Brewers (21-20) try to avoid being swept in their rain-shortened two game series against the Pirates (19-20). The Pirates have also taken all four games in the season series against the Brewers, so 'Crew starter Doug Davis (3-3, 4.04) will look to reverse that trend against the Bucs and slumping Kip Wells (3-4, 4.26). Game time is 12:35 CST and the weather outlook is overcast but dry.

I just don't understand how a team that has been struggling to score runs over the past week can afford to sit their hottest hitter. Hall isn't in the lineup again.......and again we trot Ginter and Clark out therehttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif . I just don't get it. And to what benefit was it to bring up Corey Hart if he isn't going to get anytime. 5 to 7 days of rotting on the bench isn't doing anything for his advancement. I am pretty sure we could have brought up McGruder or Liefer to do that. Come on Yost.

First, I am not sure if you were one of the people that were wanting Ginter to play so much, but remember everyone wanting Ginter to play so badly and how we were ripping Yost for not playing him.

Second, it wasn't Yost that brought up Hart. Melvin made that desision I am pretty sure. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the GM promotes and demotes guys to and from the minors. I agree on one part though, it isn't going to do Hart ANY good to sit on the Bench.

There's no room on the 40 man to bring anyone other than Hart up since Ben Ford pulled a Quevedo and said he was injured. My belief is they were going to DFA him when he pulled that. Once that situation clears or if Helms goes on the 60 day DL they can send Corey down and bring someone else up.

I can understand the desire to get Billy some time, but why isolate Ginter and Clark? Keith's OPS is .810 and while he hasn't been tearing the cover off the ball, he hasn't been terrible either. Clark is 3-for-9 with a walk in his last thirteen plate appearances (that's the last 7 days) and the reason he's in there is because Yost likes his career stats against Wells (5-for-http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif . That's a ridiculously small sample, but that's what Yost said about the decision. Apparently he had originally intended for Clark to start all three games - one in left, one in center, and one in right - but I guess the rainout changed that.

I just don't get it.

I'm not sure how comfortable Billy is playing third, so it seems like he's only going to get playing time at shortstop and second. With Counsell Nedley's new favorite player (with Wes on the DL), I don't think he's going to see a lot of time there. And with Spivey just back from injury, I would guess Nedley will let him play everyday for a while. I wouldn't mind giving Billy an occasional start in place of Ginter or in right-field, but I just don't see that happening.

And to what benefit was it to bring up Corey Hart if he isn't going to get anytime. 5 to 7 days of rotting on the bench isn't doing anything for his advancement. I am pretty sure we could have brought up McGruder or Liefer to do that. Come on Yost.

That was a 40-man roster decision. Hart is on the 40-man whereas Nunnally, Magruder, and Leifer are not. Therefore, we would have had to DFA one of the 25-man players in order to bring them up.

I don't think he'll be up for very long, and so there's really no long-term detriment to his development. If anything, I'm sure it's extra motivation because I'm sure he's having the time of his life.

Bill Schroeder said that he talked to Nedley and the third-base position is not Keith Ginter's. Rather, the trio of Ginter, Billy Hall, and Trent Durrington will share the starting duties.

I know Keith isn't exactly "hot" right now, but this is ridiculous. What does Ned have against him? I'm all for getting BH some more time, but Trent Durrington? And why is Craig Counsell's job so firmly entrenched that Billy can't get a start twice a week?

Ridiculous.

All you Ginter haters, please proceed with the "he's just a utility guy" comments.

Bill Hall sure woulda looked good batting in either the 2 or 3 hole there with the bases loaded. Man this is getting redundant.

The prospects are gonna be 28 years old before they become regulars in the lineup. Don't wanna rush anyone. The Clarks and the Counsels are going to have to retire before any playing time opens up.

I've been as big on Bill Hall as anyone, but I don't consider it bad that Yost refuses to hand him a fulltime job untill he realizes the importance of drawing walks. Needing a hot streak to raise your OBA to 315 cannot be deemed acceptable.

Removing the angry emoticon now that Lyle has gone deep.

Wow, what a horrid call in the 6th on a double play. I hope the Crew can overcome it.

Bring the anger back after an atrocious call by the umpiring crew.

Edit: Luckily, Davis worked out of it. I would have been furious if that had cost us a couple of runs.

I wish umpires would occasionally admit they are wrong. It seems like they think it would be some affront to their manhood. And apparantly yost has decided that hart is a bad hitter and unworthy of even a ph at bat but I wish I could see some proof of that myself.

Random thoughts about the last few innings:

Corey Hart lacks veteranness.

Who's the best pitcher? Mike Adams, Matt Wise, or Jeff Bennett?

Why doesn't Kip Wells have more success? He has filthy stuff.

Craig Counsell has made some silly mistakes the last few games. The ninth inning blunder last night and swinging at the first pitch after a pair of walks today highlight the list.

Junior Spivey's bat speed is quite a bit slower than usual. I hope it doesn't take him too long to get back on track after the long layoff.

Chad Moeller looks a lot better at the plate lately. I'd love to see him usurp one of Bennett's starts so the division is 4:1 instead of 3:2.

Doug Davis continues to impress.

That's all for now... do discuss.

Bennet is lucky they didn't tag him for a run, a few of those sliders hung right over the plate.

He has gotten the job done that past two times, but I can't say I agree with Yost going to him in either situation.
