05/25/2004 - Brewers (Santos) vs. Dodgers (Ishii)

After a rain-soaked road trip, the Brewers are back home at the friendly confines of Miller Park enjoying its lovely retractable roof. Victor Santos gets the ball tonight against Kaz Ishii, who despite posting a horrible K:BB ratio has been an effective pitcher this year. According to BP, his Value Over Replacement Pitcher (VORP) is 8.7 compared with Santos' 7.4, but that doesn't account for playing time. Using adjusted runs allowed, which compares a pitcher's runs allowed (both earned and unearned) to the park-adjusted league average, Santos bests Ishii with a 151 versus 106. It will be interesting to see how Nedley designs tonight's lineups against the left-hander, especially considering the club is facing another southpaw on Wednesday.

Game time is 7:05 CDT and there are plenty of good seats available.

It would really be a shame if Hart doesn't get in there today. Probably his last day in the majors -- for now -- with Capuano most likely starting tomorrow, and the Brewers are facing a left handed batter. As several on this board have suggested, Ned ought to start Hart and then "reverse pinch hit" for him if the game gets tight. Let him get in a few swings against the lefty earlier in the game, and then pull him in a key situation or when a righty comes in and let Clark/Grieve hit.

This isn't Brewers-related, but I didn't want to start a new thread... Kyle Peterson is broadcasting the Red Sox/A's game on ESPN2. It's Hudson versus Schilling at Fenway, and it should be a dandy.

I really enjoy Peterson's commentating... maybe the Brewers can sign him back as a TV prospect... TINSTAAPP, but TISATAATVP. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Today's lineups are brought to you by Corey Hart, who hopefully is enjoying his time on the Brewers' bench.

 LOS ANGELES MILWAUKEE AVG HR RBI AVG HR RBI Cesar Izturis SS .290 2 13 Scott Podsednik CF .264 4 14 Shawn Green 1B .225 7 19 Bill Hall SS .296 4 20 Milton Bradley CF .268 6 21 Junior Spivey 2B .270 3 17 Adrian Beltre 3B .331 11 31 Geoff Jenkins LF .262 4 24 Paul Lo Duca C .351 1 15 Lyle Overbay 1B .363 6 39 Juan Encarnacion RF .237 5 22 Brady Clark RF .224 3 12 Jason Grabowski LF .258 4 8 Keith Ginter 3B .259 7 16 Alex Cora 2B .295 3 13 Gary Bennett C .246 1 6 Kazuhisa Ishii LHP .118 0 2 Victor Santos RHP .000 0 0 (5-3, 3.88) (2-0, 3.12)

Nice work getting Hall, Spivey, and Ginter all into the lineup at once, but Nedley's obsession with keeping the positional order the same is irritating. Why isn't Ginter batting second and hall sixth with Clark seventh? Or Spivey, then Ginter? Or Spivey, then Hall? Or Ginter, then Hall?

Why do you put a power hitter with a low OBP as your #2 hitter?

Bill, as an eternal Ned supporter, I think I'll give you the best possible reason I can come up with. Well, two reasons. Hall's power and speed can help be disruptive at the top of the order. Pods gets on, and then Hall has the gap power to score him without needing to steal.

The other reason I can come up with is to get Hall as many at bats as possible. He seems to do something special at the plate each game he starts, and one more AB could be part of it.

But seriously, I think Hall's best roles are in the 3, 5, or 6 hole. I list the 3 hole. Given the fact that we have so many 2 or 3-types, it's probably 5th or 6th then. I have a hunch we'll see Hall multiple times this series. It'll be easier to find him playing time when we're really only juggling 4 players between 2nd, SS, and 3rd

Good to see we have the NL's most feared 6 hole hitter in today's lineup once again. Maybe he can ground into more double plays, or better yet, get thrown out stealing again.

Brady, you are a great reserve outfielder, but you are not a platoon outfielder...I know it isn't your fault and I will not hold it against you, but sheesh...

Clark should never, ever play.

I don't know about that, but why does he have to bat sixth? When Grieve plays, the RF bats seventh (probably to split up the left-handers a bit). When the 6/7 decision was between Helms and Clark, I still would have rather seen Helms bat sixth. But between Ginter and Clark?

Why can't Clark bat seventh just like Grieve?

I wonder if Nedley even has a reason. And I realize it doesn't matter all that much, but it's one of the little things that he could do to improve the club's chances (even that tiny bit).

I hope they keep Santos in. A 4-run inning isn't the end of the world; we need to see if he can settle down and eat up the innings a starter's supposed to eat up.

Good start to the bottom of the inning with Podsednik's walk...

Yeah, i agree about Santos, i'm far from sold on him as a starter, but he's done pretty good this year considering. I think he should stay in for at least the start of the next inning to see if he can right the ship. What a fabulous at bat by Hall huh?? We can come back on these guys!! Trent

Un-freaking-believable. After Ishii walks THREE CONSECUTIVE BATTERS to load the bases with no outs, the next three Brewers ALL SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH. Granted, Overbay's resulted in a sac fly... but what's wrong with making Ishii throw even more pitches and maybe walk in another run?

Where's the patience we are always talking about? That is like example 1 of why it's important to have some discipline at the plate.

They all get demerits. Bad.

Not only did he look horrible, but he swung at the first 3 pitches AFTER ISHII HAD WALKED THE BASES LOADED. I usually hate it when he swings at 2-0 pitches when what we need is baserunners... but this time I SWORE he wouldn't do anything as stupid as what he just did this time.

I also can't believe no one made sure to tell him not to swing at the first pitch on his way to the plate.

Geoff is so in my doghouse.

Bill Schroeder just said that "walking batters is something you don't normally see from Santos" because "he relies on control". Are you kidding me? Does Bill Schroeder even pay attention at all? Santos' biggest problem is his control... he relies on good stuff, especially his splitter, and has always been plagued by high walk totals. There is absolutely no question that what Bill Schroeder just stated as fact is TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY FALSE. Not just kind of false, but 180 degrees from the truth. And it's not a small mistake... he described one of the Brewers' starters in a manner that is completely contrary to reality. And now fans at home, who don't happen to know better, will think that Santos is a control pitcher.

I don't get it. That kind of blatent disregard for reality would get most people fired.
