05/26/2004 - Brewers (Capuano) vs. Dodgers (Perez)

BuckyTuba
Before people start talking about how great the pitching has been over the past few weeks, remember who the Brewers opponents have been. The New York Mets who average 4.3 runs per game (scored 4.67 per game against the Brewers), the Expos at 2.65 runs per game (3.33 runs against the Brewers), the Braves at 4.48 runs per game (4.67 runs per against the Brewers), the Pirates at 4.7 runs per game (2 per game against the Brewers in the last 2), and the Dodgers at 4.34 runs per game (so far 3 per against the Brewers). Of course the Dodgers offense might be returning to its true form right now. So the Brewers haven't exactly been pitching lights out but played some offensively challenged teams and did OK against them.

Two points. One, it really looked like Ginter's bunt could have possibly rolled foul if Beltre had let it go. Second, why the hell was Beltre risking the throw anyways with no outs in the inning yet. Dumb play by him, but thanks anyways.

I really, really, really want to be 3 games over going into the Padres series. 2 over feels too much like.500. Man, it is amazing how quick one can get higher expectations.

I've just been amazed at how the staff as a whole has seemed to crank it up a notch now that the offense is slumping. Even though the Dodgers Ofense isn't clicking. They keep getting themselves into jams, but manage to either get lucky or flat out pitch out of it. I mean one run over a combined 12 innings thats flat out awesome no matter who your facing. Cudos to the staff as of late, and for that matter most of the year! Hopefully Cappy is going to be fine and not have to go on the DL again, because he looked pretty good for the most part last night. He kept the Dodgers off pace all night with the changeup, and then they couldn't seem to catch up to his upper 80's fastball.

I agree with the pitching improvment. I don't think it is coincedence that it happened with the demotion of hernadez and ford. I'm just glad that, at least with the pitching, when you perform badly they will change things up. Kinney sucked, he's in the bullpen, Hernadez sucked, he's in AAA, Ford sucked, he's in the DL, Obie sucked, he hasn't pitched in 3 weeks.

And Kinney has improved in the bullpen and Obie would also I believe be fine there. Our bullpen has always had enough candidates for it, just never picked the right candidates.

Though somehow Durrington escaped this trend, at least for pitching the org is going for some kind of production based formula which has been lacking in recent years. Hopefully they will apply this to Leifer sooner than later.

In case anyone's interested, the Dodgers T.V. guys kept track of the number of balls used in the game.

Final tally: 79 through 9 innings; 99 through 12.

Have to admit I did wonder once about how many balls are used in a game.

You can all rest easy now.
