5/28/2004... Padres (Lawrence) vs. Brewers (Davis) 7:05 CST

The Brewers look win their third game in a row and go 4 games above .500 for the first time this season. Padres RHP Lawrence has been painfully Franklin-esqe this season, posting a 4.80 Era , 1.71 WHIP, and .323 BAA, giving the Brewers offense a chance to break out of his slump.

Lawrence has however posted a 6-3 record, thanks largely to the Padres offense. The Brewers send Doug Davis to the mound. The southpaw goes for his sixth consecutive "quality start", having given up only eight earned runs in his last five appearances (29.2 IP) with an ERA of 2.46 over that span and a WHIP of 1.28 with 4 BB and 18K

Davis has really surprised me lately. He really looks like he's found a groove.

(Pardon my use of the word "look". As a resident of the state of Minnesota, I was teased with Brewers games on TV until the Twins killed Victory Sports. Now I'm back to watching the Twins and either listening to the Crew on the radio or following at MLB.com. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif )

That said, Davis has been really good lately, and he deserves a much better W/L record than the one he possesses.

As for Lawrence, I've actually seen him pitch, and I follow him a bit because I have him on a fantasy team. He's benefitted from run support a couple different times, but he's got ability. He strikes me as one of those "boom or bust" pitchers, in terms of his ability to control all his pitches at the same time. He's had a lot of trouble finding the strike zone at various points this season, with 22 walks in about 54 IP. The Brewers have to be patient with this guy and make him throw strikes. For the most part, he's been really unimpressive on the road this season.

Wearing my heart on my sleeve since birth. Hopefully, it's my only crime.

One could actually argue that Lawrence has been better on the road than at Pitcher Friendly Petco....

Home (Petco)

6.05 ERA 4G 22 IP 31H 15 R 15 ER 0 HR 9 BB 13K .344 BAA

Away

3.94 ERA 6G 32 IP 40H 18 R 14 ER 8 HR 13 BB 24 K .308 BAA

Bottom line, we will get chances to score, and we gotta produce with RISP... a few HR would be nice as well... Cmon Jenks!

I think it will be interesting to see how the Brewers' pitching does against the Padres. This is the first series in a long time where the opposing team sports a very good hitting lineup. If the Brewers can continue their excellent streak of good pitching throughout this series, I will start to think that maybe its not a fluke and maybe Maddux has actually gotten through to them.

I predict, however, that the Brewers will need to score more than 3 runs to win any of this weekend's games.

I'll go along with that - especially with no Ben Sheets' start this weekend.

I am guessing that Ned has wanted to give Podsednik a day off for a while, but he was waiting for Podsednik to have a good game first. That way it would not feel like a benching.

Smart move in my opinion.
