5/31/2004 - Brewers (Wise) vs. Dodgers (Perez)

Well, actually I have been thinking, is something wrong with Burba? Or has Ned just forgot about him with all his new toys to pitch with? He last pitched on May 25th and wouldn't have gotten in today if Kolb closed the door.

Bottom line:

We all know this, but this team can't win if they don't start hitting. This pitching staff is only capable of so many pick-me-up performances before they fall flat on their face. But if they aren't required to carry the team, I think they can be okay.

This team is a 7-1 loss away from falling apart. Here's to finding a way to get the offense going before that happens.

Wearing my heart on my sleeve since birth. Hopefully, it's my only crime.

HBP on a 1-2 count and giving up a single on a 0-2 count to Beltre...that shouldn't happen. He was getting ahead on everyone but cannot put batters away.

Getting outs is great, but ML hitters make productive outs and move runners. A closer has to have the ability to get strike outs. Kolb for some reason doesn't get it done that way. He has 5 K's on the season.

Why would anyone think the Brewers should draft anything but pitchers in the early rounds this year? "Man OH Man".

Seasons go bad with games like this. The boys need to rebound with Ace pitching tomorrow.

I posted an almost identical message in my fantasy league right after the game. Tomorrow is huge. This was the 1st game of 9 on the West coast and we can't afford to drop another one tomorrrow and see this steamroll into a losing streak. This year's team has shown us so many things including the ability to bounce back and that quality must emerge tomorrow....

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

Quoth Bill Michaels (just a few minutes ago):
"This team can't afford to take too many pitches."
And paraphrasing Bill Michaels:
"They have to come up swinging"

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Bill Michaels is ridiculous. In a bad way.

Anyway, I wanted to post this little tidbit from Adam McCalvy's MLB.com Game Recap:

"My favorite pitcher growing up was Tommy John. Now I'm 14 months off his surgery and pitching in his stadium."

-- Matt Wise

That's pretty cool, I must say.

You hate to start a really tough road trip by blowing a save, but it happens to all closers from time to time. A two-run lead is really not that much. I can't fault Dan Kolb.

Tuesday's game will be a good test of how this team bounces back from a tough loss. But the boys have got to start hitting and scoring again. This offensive drought is getting out of hand.

I'd like to say I took the quotes out of context, but I didn't. I was riding in the car, which is why I could memorize the first one but had to paraphrase the second.

The subject came up when a caller complained about Ben Grieve taking pitches and saying "That's why Lou Piniella got rid of him". Somehow the idea that Piniella isn't always that on the ball was missed. My theory is that the real reason Lou didn't like Grieve is that Ben looks like a zombie while he's batting. I don't really care how Ben looks.

The fact that Grieve might be 'too patient' might even have a shred of validity; batters have to adjust to a situation. But it's sure a whole lot better than the other way around. I'd take a player with an OBP 126 points above his BA (like Ben) over the guys Milwaukee had a few years ago...I don't remember the year, but I remember the team...most of the lineup was batting over .300 but the Brewers weren't scoring runs or winning games.

That's when I started taking OBP seriously, and I'm glad that more people are buying into it. Now, let's convince Michaels (if that's possible).

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Well I for one will look at this game as the beginning of a Jenkins hot streak until prooven otherwise! And if Spivey and Overbay just start to hit somewhat again the offense will be clicking right along. The last few weeks we've basically had a couple of guys doing there usual thing combined with 3-4 who are ice cold at any one moment, with nobody hot. That's just not going to cut it for any team.
