6/9/2004: Brewers (Santos) @ Angels (Washburn)

JaNelson52

Nicely done, bullox.

What is going on with Junior Spivey? I really wish that Bill and Daron wouldn't keep making excuses for him... it's either a lack of concentration or effort or something, but it's not just "a funk". I can't remember the last time a player had four errors in the span of two games... the Dynamic Duo are making it seem like this is a normal occurence.

Remember when Junior had a ton of trade value? Remember when we might have been able to trade him for someone of Meltdown Bradley's calibre? Yeah... that's not going to happen now.

I have to admit that it was nice of Nedley to give Durrington a start against his old team. It's very hard to hate on Trent 'cause he's a pretty cool dude... not a valuable-to-this-team pretty cool dude, but a pretty cool dude nonetheless. From Adam McCalvy's notes column:

Quote:
With Anaheim left-hander Jarrod Washburn on the mound for the second game of an Interleague series, Brewers manager Ned Yost stacked his lineup card with as many right-handed hitters as he could find.

The card included designated hitter ... Trent Durrington?

Yep, Durrington, the 25th man on the roster who entered the game batting .192 with one home run and one RBI in just 26 at-bats this season. Wednesday was his second start this season.

"I feel pretty good actually," said Durrington, 28, who came up through the Angels minor league system. "I scuffled there early in the year. But then I kind of figured out what my role is on this team, and my last couple of at-bats have been better."

Durrington has what Brewers manager Ned Yost calls, "The toughest job in all of Major League Baseball, and that's being a pinch-hitter in the National League."

"There's no time to make adjustments," Durrington said. "It's not like I can see a guy once and then adjust the next time up. I don't get a next time up. You just have to stay consistent, every time."

Despite his statistical struggles, Durrington is a Yost favorite. He is a decent defender at third and second base, and serves as the Brewers' emergency catcher, trekking to the bullpen on most nights to help warm up Brewers relievers.

Durrington also "pitched in" earlier this season, retiring the only batter he faced -- Houston's Jose Vizcaino -- in an April 17 Astros rout. He made Milwaukee's Opening Day roster after coming to camp with a minor league contract.

"They could send me down; it would be no problem," said Durrington, who has two minor league options remaining. "But I can't worry about that."

With Durrington, right fielder Brady Clark and shortstop Bill Hall in Wednesday's lineup against the Wisconsin native Washburn, the only right-handed bat on Yost's bench was catcher Chad Moeller.

Also from the same column, apparently the Dynamic Duo got the "Ginter would catch" thing wrong, too.

Quote:
No doubt that it was a wild game, finally ending in the top of the 17th inning when Craig Counsell scored from first base on Scott Podsednik's double. But it almost got even wilder.

Yost said that at one point in extra innings he considered using Durrington, the only position player not used. In the event catcher Gary Bennett was hurt or had to leave the game, Durrington would have caught, Clark would have moved in to play third base and right-handed starter Wes Obermueller would have played right field.

Obermueller was an outfielder and shortstop at the University of Iowa before he converted into a full-time pitcher.

Those two guys are incompetent, so I'll trust McCalvy's judgment.

But he was such a valuable nugget for Doug to pick up. We had to have him so that we could bench Ginter and then watch Juniors trade value sink below the Bush administrations ethics line.

And on cue, he doubles in a run.

Washburn sure doesn't look too good anymore. His win totals have been artificially inflated, 'cause he's really not a quality pitcher anymore. I think he's just what the doctor ordered for our hang dog offense.

Think we can break the 5 run barrier tonight? I might go to George Webb's just to celebrate. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

so should we blame Podsednik's rescent slump on the woman just like Earl Woods' blames his son's slump on his lady friend?

If Tiger is slumping because of to much play with Elin Nordegren,i'm sure he's surviving just fine. He's richer than some countries, his slump isn't exactly breaking him.

Just to add to the post count:

- That ball Vlad hit was *crushed*. I can't wait to hear the estimated distance.

- Guillen was out on that pickoff play, obviously.

- That balk was ugly.

- Santos is not looking real reliable right now. I'm getting somewhat concerned that our bullpen is not going to be there when we need it tonight, at least not in the quantity that Santos is going to require.

EDIT: And one more thing...

- I think Guillen's leg is still hurting, 'cause he's made two ridiculous baserunning plays in a row. Ug-ly. But thanks, Jose... we appreciate it.

Go team.

EDIT: Nice job, team. That DP wasn't pretty, but it got the job done. Now, how 'bout some more offense? I don't want to be greedy, but I think we're going to need it.

Y'all are going to have to pick me up for tonight's game thread... I'm about ready to go crash on the couch and watch the rest of the game from a horizontal position. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Santos gets worse and worse with every start

Didn't he dominate San Diego last week? Anyway, it's too bad our bullpen is toasted after last night. Santos is getting hit hard. He's lucky to have only given up two runs so far.

Some timely double plays have really saved us so far.

Victor Santos has the Doug Davis thing going, 'cept he gives up more extra-base hits. I have a lot less faith that Santos' success will continue, but he keeps finding ways to do just enough to stay in the game.

It's like he's the pitcher Clancy thinks Wayne Franklin is. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Keith Ginter goes into second as hard as anyone else in baseball.

How can you not love him? Seriously.

EDIT: As hard, not harder. Homer caught me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Santos has less than dominating stuff and a checkered career, hard for me to think struggles wont be a part of the equation with him.

Agreed. He's been a really nice surprise, though, and the starts he's given us in the absence of Capuano and Kinney have been critical to the team's continued .500 record. I'd advocate continuing to ride him until he forces our hand or a better option surfaces. For now, though, he's a-okay with me.

EDIT: Two questions:

1> Where did those last two pitches to Salmon miss?

2> Why doesn't Santos seem to care that DaVanon is running all over him?

Couldn't agree more Bill. At THIS point in time, there isn't a better option than Santos, and he isn't getting SHELLED in any of his starts (yet). Til Capuano can stop getting the hell beat out of him by A ball batters, and also stay healthy for more than 4 innings at a time, Santos is the best option for the spot.

OK, I can accept any offensive argument you want to give me for your man-crush on Ginter, but this is ridiculous. He goes in AS hard as anyone but not harder. Don't let your love for him cloud your objectivity.
