Clancy.

He went to pick off a runner, but he stepped DIRECTLY towards the plate, then threw to first. It was a GREAT move, too bad that it's blatantly illegal! And yes, it was called a balk, which was too bad, because they caught him up in a rundown. The worst thing is it came back to bite him later in the inning.

Doug has come back to Earth, at least for now. The thing is, before this season I expected games like this -- call them "barely quality starts" -- to represent the middle-upper range of his ability. If such games really turn out to represent the middle-lower range of his ability, and he runs off more stretches like we were seeing before these last couple of starts, he's a serious keeper. Seeing which way he goes will be one of the most interesting things the rest of this season.

All better, Greg.

And I definitely agree with you about Davis... this wasn't a great start, but it also was pretty good for a "bad start". If he can put together streaks of two-to-three starts like this and two-to-three-starts like he was earlier in the year, he'll be a really valuable pitcher. The one promising sign is that he's made a lot of mechanical changes and so he's not really the same pitcher he used to be... and even then, he was MLB average.
