6/12/2004 - Brewers (Capuano) vs. Houston (Oswalt)

granted... Bob Brainard is pretty awful when it comes to his segments that couldnt be farther away from what is actually going on in the game, but daron and bill dont do that bad of a job, daron's enthusiasm is great to listen to when the crew gets a big run or something like that, and bill is a little off on his calls sometimes, but overall they arent as bad as some of you are making them out to be.

when Darron says 3 things a night that are statistically, factually untrue.
That's when I lose it, not just with Daron and Bill, but with so many reporters doing their so-called jobs.

I remember a friend calling me in shock during the OJ trial. She watched her video tape of the proceedings, then watched a news report. She said, "That isn't what happened!!!"

I told her she should watch more sports. Sports broadcasts provide definitive examples of how the media messes up. They don't care about details or even what they say. And they're willing to repeat the same misstatements over and over again.

Hey, that's news in general.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Actually Bob Uecker turned 69 on January 26th of this year.

I should clarify my previous Craig Coshun post a little. It almost sounded like Craig was unbearable, too. I could deal with what he did.

I just got home a little while ago, but I did want to say that today's game was a lot of fun. I sat way out in the nether regions of the terrace level and folks were pretty loud and into the game. I haven't seen Miller Park so packed in a long time.... and for once, it wasn't because of all the Cubs fans. When the fog rolled in late in the game, it got kind of surreal in there. I'm surprised they didn't close the roof, as it looked like it was going to rain for at least the last hour of the game, but I'm glad they didn't.

Nice to see the offense continuing to asplode, Cappy back on the hill, and the Brewers finally getting the job done in front of the huge crowd.

Fun stuff. Is today a good day to be a Brewer fan, or what?

I was sick last night and just watched the game on tape after a long 12 hour sleep. Imagine that! I get to watch two Brewer games today. One was a big Brewer win and the next will be a Ben Sheet's start. Oh.....yeah http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/pimp.gif

Carts and horses and all that, but the Brewers sure are setting themselves up for a great homestand performance and attedance wise. Sheets today looks very promising plus Pete Munro on the otherside, he's done alright, but certainly no Oswalt or Clemens. Then a midweek series against the Mariners, talk about opportunity to have some buzz going into next weekend. For those keeping track at home attendance is now up 20% from last year nearing the 20K mark per game.

The Brewers' manhandling of the Astros in these two games is especially impressive when you look at how well the two teams have played this year in terms of runs scored and allowed. I'm too lazy to do the strict pythagorean calculations, so I'll use the estimate that each ten-run differential should be good for about one game over .500.

The Brewers are now 31-28, but they have scored only six more runs than they have allowed. That means they have performed slightly better than their run expectation; they "should" be 30-29.

The Astros, on the other hand, have been the best team in the division at run differential. They're now 32-28, and they have scored 46 more runs than they have allowed. Their record puts them right about where their run differential suggests they should be.

The reason this is impressive for the Brewers is that the Astros "should" be in first place and in fact "should" have the best record in the NL. The Reds, as people have widely reported, have vastly overachieved, giving up 22 more runs than they have scored. They're predictably falling back to Earth, but they're still at 34-27 when they "should" have only 29 or 30 wins.

Less widely noted is the fact that the Cards have also overachieved somewhat. They're eight games over .500 at 35-27 when their 38-run differential should put them only four games over at 33-29. That would place them percentage points behind Houston's expected record.

A couple more notes. By this measure, the Cubs' record should be about a game better than what it is, placing them two games up on the Brewers. Oh, well; life sucks if you're the Cubs. All three contenders in NL West have overperformed, with the Dodgers having the best run differential at +26. In the East, Philly is right where their division-best +26 differential should place them, but they should have a 1.5-game lead on Florida (+5), with Atlanta (+13) and the Mets(+1) also a bit better than their actual records.

Most of the discrepencies are pretty minor, but they point up the serious parity in the NL so far this year. This weekend, the Brewers have already done a lot to level that playing field. Today? Sheets. Against Houston. In Milwaukee. In the daytime. Nothing in baseball is certain, but the Astros really had no business getting out of bed this morning.

Greg.
