6/17/2004 - Brewers (Capuano) vs. Mariners (Franklin)

Keith Ginter gets a day (or two) off when he has a bad game or is in a bad stretch. Ben Grieve isn't allowed to finish a game, because according to Yost his defense is too bad.

But yet Scott Podsednik will be in the starting lineup and will bat every time, every day, even though he is playing like total crap and is completely getting away from the things that made him successful last year. His only hit in this series was a drag bunt that Olerud didn't go for last night.

Its double standards and decisions like these that really bother me with Yost.

Still, 2 out of 3 against an uncommon opponent is a good thing. Seattle was playing their best ball of the season heading into this series, the Brewers beat their ace, and the starting pitching remains really good.

Disappointing, but still good. At that half-way point of the homestand, we're 4-2. If we can duplicate that the rest of the way, we'd finish 8-4. Would anyone really be upset about that?

The Crew needs to get into the habit of finishing opponents off when they are on the ropes.

Win the first two games, then finish the job.

This sort of thing might not seem important now, and I'm glad to win another three-game series, but when it's the playoffs, finishing off opponents will matter. I'd like to see the team get into the habit sooner, rather than later.

Someday we'll figure out how to sweep! Anyway, why do I have a Meatlof song in my head?

2 Out Of 3 Aint Bad

"Now dont be sad

Cause 2 out of 3 aint bad

Now dont be sad

Cause 2 out of 3 aint bad"

Friday is a Sheets start. Those are always fun, because we can go into the game with confidence!

Podsednik is the only CF on the roster.

What do you want Yost to do, dump a pitcher and call up Mitch Bergeron?

No, I want Podsednik to get a couple games (if not a series) off so that Wynegar can work with Scott to get him back to hitting line drives and ground balls, not pop-ups with that god-awful upper-cut swing that has re-developed. One of the reasons the Brewers offense is struggling like it is is because Podsednik isn't getting on base like he did last year. A .339 OBP from your leadoff man simply will not cut it.

Scott is hardly a CF defensive whiz. Brady can play it for three days.

I just find it amusing that certain players are treated differently than others when it comes to slumps and struggling, and weaknesses. Scotty's OBP could fall under .300 and he would still probably find himself at the top of the order each and every day. However, Ginter has one bad game and rides the pine for three days, and Grieve's defense is perceived to be so bad that he needs to leave the game after the 6th inning each day.

I am going to have to agree with the people who advocate giving Pod a day or two off. While I did not see today's game, he has looked bad at the plate over the past week or two swinging at pitches that are clearly out of the strike zone. He's been chopping at pitches above his head. He is definitely one of the most exciting players in the National League but everyone in any job goes into a slump every now and then and needs a chance to recover.

Congratulations to the Brewers for their third straight series victory. Let's keep it going against the Twins!!!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The worst thing that Pods can do is hit a couple homeruns. It's nice that he's got some pop. But it's apparently getting into his head whenever he DOES hit a homer that he should be doing it more often, and it REALLY shows in his approach at the plate lately.

Give Brady a series out in center, and let Pods get his head out his beeehind and figure out what he was doing right last year. It's not like Brady will be any worse than what Pods did in this series. Just don't let him steal is all.

Yes I'd take Jenkins out aginst LH relievers, especially good ones like Myers and Guardado. Jenkins OPS against LH pitchers:

2002: .601

2003: .718

2004: .636

Jenkins, like many LH hitters is bad against LH pitchers. I'd especially do it until Jenkins starts hitting in general.

Clark has broken out of his own slump so this would be a perfect time to give him several days in center. Will it happen? I'm going to go with no. Should it? Yep.

With Liefer on the club, having Clark play isn't as bad as it would have been... we still have an outfielder on the bench, plus Podzilla, and Clark can play center just fine.

When I see Scotty take that softball swing at pitches up near his eyes, I'm tempted to throw my bobblehead. It hasn't happened yet, but I think a few days off would be good for both the real Scotty Po and his miniature likeness. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Perhaps your not aware of this, but the Brewers are a baseball team, not a boxer.

And a baseball team expected to be about 20 games under .500 at that. I won't be losing any sleep when we fail to pull of a sweep as long as we take the series.

I agree that the brewers need to finish off Teams.

Like i said the other day living in NYC and watching the yanks finish off teams it would be nice but after years of following the crew it nice to see them win some series and we all know how hard it is to sweep.

But the Crew has not be 4 game over in two years so there are positve signs

Hey brewmann! You live in NYC! I thought I was the only Brewer fan out here. I live in Brooklyn, how 'bout you? Are you "transplanted"? I actually grew up a Yankee fan but I'm such a crazy cat that I got tired of watching them spend Fort Knox and winning all the time. I've never been to Milwaukee; don't know nobody who does.

Change 'one bad game' to 'one bad month', and remove the word 'perceived,' and I completely agree with the above statement http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

For the record, Ginter's OPS in May was .674. His OPS so far in June is a shockingly bad .603. Yipe.

As an aside, I smashed a Scotty Po bobblehead in TGI Fridays when he popped up last Saturday. The girl I grabbed it from was not amused.
