6/22/2004 - Brewers (Davis) vs. Rockies (Jennings)

as of now there is aprox. 26 hours away from game time and I have decided to post the game thread. Jason Jennings is going to face off against Doug Davis.

This is the first of only two meetings between these two clubs, the only one in Milwaukee. The other, which will be next week, is in Colorado.

The Rockies come to town in much better health than just a week ago. Preston Wilson rejoined the team on Friday and Larry Walker is expected to make his return to the line-up on Tuesday. We'll also see former Brewers Jeromy Burnitz, Royce Clayton, and Mark Sweeney.

This team still has a very tough of the order with proven veterans like Todd Helton, Preston Wilson, Vinny Castilla, Burnitz, and Larry Walker. A mistake to any of those 5 can easily come back and haunt a pitcher.

Lineups

Colorado

1. Miles 2B

2. Clayton SS

3. Helton 1B

4. Wilson CF

5. Walker RF

6. Castilla 3B

7. Burnitz LF

8. Johnson C

9. Jennings P

When did you ever think you would see a lineup with Royce Clayton hitting second and Jeromy Burnitz and Charles Johnson hitting 7-8?

Brewers

1. Podsednik CF

2. Spivey 2B

3. Jenkins LF

4. Overbay 1B

5. Clark RF

6. Ginter 3B

7. Moeller C

8. Counsell SS

9. Davis P

Wonder what the excuse for not playing Ben Grieve is tonight?

EDIT: Perhaps Ned got scared at the 1.029 OPS figure, which is what lefties are hitting Jason Jennings at so far this season.

Amazing. Simply amazing. Brady fricken Clark. Hitting fifth.

C'mon guys, Clark's been really goin out there and doing his job. He's battling everytime up at the plate, showing a lot of grit and fierce determination, hanging in there and giving it his all and more.

Remember this?

"When I watch him in the cage, he has the best pure hands on the team. I'm not kidding. When Royce is right, he uses his hands better than anybody on the team."

- Nedley, regarding Royce Clayton's hands

LOL.

Speaking of that terrible call, Daron just mentioned that two of the umpires in this series are minor league replacement umps. Two of the regulars are on vacation. Is that not weird? When you've got a four-man team, shouldn't they stagger the vacations so there's only one replacement ump and he doesn't have to work the plate in a three-game series?

So far, Ted Barrett has been abysmal.

EDIT: Junior Spivey or Ben Grieve... who's the better defensive player?

So, watching on TV, the boys say that there are 2 substitute/minor league umps on tonight's crew. These guys get vacation during the season, huh? You'd think the time from October-March would be enough. Imagine if it worked that way for the players too.
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

I have a little league game to get to, so I'll have to catch up with the DB later tonight. Sorry 'bout that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

On an unrelated note, here's what RotoWorld has to say about Grieve:

Even though the Brewers are facing a right-hander, Ben Grieve is out of the starting lineup for a fourth straight game tonight.

Grieve is 8-for-33 and doesn't have an extra-base hit this month. Still, he has a 799 OPS, and though he has just 18 RBI, he's actually hitting better with runners on than he is with the bases empty. Unless manager Ned Yost is really displeased with Grieve's defense, there's no reason to keep him out of the lineup.

Take this for what it's worth, but it's interesting that an "outsider" is even taking notice of Grieve's absence.

Later folks... enjoy the game!
