6/23/2004 - Brewers (Capuano) vs. Rockies (Estes)

Is a Single better than a HR? Hell no.

My point - lately we have not EVEN BEEN MAKING CONTACT when we need one run to tie or win a game. And, yes, I gave ONE example, but OPS can be misleading because we could be up 5-1 with a runner on 2nd and hit a HR, then in the next 4 games be down by one with RISP and less than two outs and K or pop out each time and lose all 4 games. Now, the HR inflates the OPS and we can all sleep better knowing that we arent slumping in clutch situations because our OPS is decent. Yeah right, that makes sense.

That was brutal. I almost wish the tornado warning coverage for SE Wisconsin would have continued and spared me having to see those last two at bats.

Lyle?s at bat was bad, but IIRC he had two quick strikes and was somewhat backed into a corner. Clark should be stuffed into his locker for the whole night for hitting a weak foul popup on a 2-0 count. ARGHHHHH!!!!!11oneone Can we take a trip back to San Juan or hire Tonya Harding?

At least Ginter is showing signs of life. Just in time for Helms to come back.

I swear ned is in love with Brady, just like he was with royce clayton last year. Brady is a total ----bag! Same with moeller and bennett but ned will tell you that they are doing there job by handling the pitching staff. That mentality is fine if you have a lineup like st.louis where you can carry a suckass catcher. we need every bat we can, and continuely playing brady and batting him in the 5th hole is just flat out sorry!! Why are they so scared on making a move for a right fielder either a trade if they want corey to stay at AAA, or bring him up his offensive upside over brady or grieve in the long run will be night and day. I'm going tomorrow and Big Ben better shut them down cause you know we won't score many runs.

That seems to be a big problem, I think.

The fact is, while the team is good at getting on base (much better than some past Brewers clubs - 2001 comes to mind...), the big problem is that the team's hitters outside of Overbay and Jenkins don't really have the power to make a pitcher pay for a mistake.

The Crew should have gotten both the runs needed to win in - and didn't. Overbay's at-bat was pretty bad, too.

The right field platton has been a disappointment. Third base has also been pretty disappointing on the power angle (Wes Helms started slow, then got hurt - and Keith Ginter's not hitting the way he did last year or in `02, for that matter). Bill Hall is good, but Yost keeps playing Counsell because Hall's glove is questionable.

I think a big reason for some of Podsednik's dropoff in OBP is due to him pressing to add some power. He sees runenrs on base, he tries to drive them in. That is NOT his game - it is closer to OBP and speed. That said, even in this "disappointing" year, he's leading the NL in stolen bases, and is 30-for-32.

The offense needs some changeover next year. Helms, Moeller/Bennett, Counsell, and Grieve/Clark need to be replaced. I see hope to replace Grieve/Clark with Corey Hart. Maybe Bill Hall can take over for Counsell - and when JJ Hardy comes up, he can slide Hall to third, displacing Helms.

But right now... the Brewers don't have the offensive punch of a playoff team. The pitching staff is, IMHO, 90% there. But the offense has a long way to go.

Clancy, I agree...to a point. I think Moeller will have a big second half but I think we need to bring up Hart to play right and trade Clark (not sure what we'd get for him though).

O, so singles are better than HRs. I stand corrected.

In that situation, a single would have been just as good as a home run.....but you already knew that.

I kind of doubt the Brewers could trade a guy who's OPS wouldn't cut it if he were a middle infielder.

The solution to RF right now is to play Ben Grieve more. Its as simple as that. I find it funny that Ned Yost ******* about how poorly his offense is producing, but at the same time refuses to play a guy who gets on base nearly 40% of the time.

Grieve should only be in left field. I don't want him in right. If he is playing, move Jenkins to right. Arguably, Lyle Overbay would be a better OF option - with Grieve moving to 1B.

His defense in the outfield is a liability.

"Brady Clark=Devil..........

Why on 2-0, why? Oh, that's right. You are the Devil.

Did anyone think about a Left handed PH in that situation?"

Leifer was the only one left, since Grieve was used earlier against a lefty. I wouldn't have minded Leifer, but I could never envision Yost making that move.

i was at the game last night. not too big of a crowd, but nearly everyone was standing when we choked in the 8th and 9th.

what is with yost bunting with only one out? he did it twice last night, one of the times with geoff jenkins of all people.

the average runs scored with a runner on 2nd and 2 outs is .23 runs LOWER than a runner on 1st and one out. unless you have a pitcher or two singles hitters coming up i don't see the point.
