7-2-2004: Brewers (Davis) @ Pirates (Perez) - GAME 1

JaNelson52

Obviously this is a very important series, and I feel this game is the most important of the series, for this reason: the rest of the weekend's pitching matchups, along with the status of the bullpen for the entire weekend, rest solely on the performance of Doug Davis in this contest.

Word of warning for those who don't know: Oliver Perez is good. Very good. He is only 3-4, but look at these numbers:

-- Only 65 hits allowed in 85 innings

-- 1.14 WHIP

-- 102 K

And he throws left-handed. And he is only 22.

- So, what's today's excuse for not playing Ben Grieve?

SEE ABOVE PICTURE

EDIT: Actually, Grieves done fine against Lefties in this season, although has only 10 AB this year against them. I wouldn't be suprised if his career stats are better than Clark's against lefties. Someone look that up, please http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've got a feeling this thread should accumulate quite a few posts by game 1's end...I know that I've got "Brewer Fever"

Oliver Perez is good though but he's young...take advantage of that Crew and things hopefully will work out

With just a little more power by Grieve, I'd take the better defense of Clark. Kinda sad when Clark can't outhit a lefty against lefties though.

For those who didn't run the Math if the Brewers win oth games today they will be in the lead for the wildcard atleast on percentage points regardless of any other games. And they will have sole possession if the White Sox continue their winning ways against the sCrUBS. They also of course pick up atleast half a game on every other team in the division. Some pretty interesting match-ups as interleague play wraps up. Houston vs. the Rangers certainly holds the promise of pushing them farther down. the Chicago teams are pretty evenly matched. Cleveland vs. Cincy are slugfests and late rallies waiting to happen.

Im starting both guys on my fantasy baseball team but Im secretly hoping that Loiaza gives me a HUGE start and Oswalt falters.

its so cool actually caring about other teams games at this time of year with ambitions of moving up in the standings.

I know, when was the last time it mattered what other teams were doing?

BTW, I'll be in door county all weekend. Anyone know the AM station I can tune into that gets the game the best. I remember having trouble last year.

Help! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Is anyone else worried that we are going to Pittsburgh after sweeping our last opponent?

I'd be worried if Allen Levrault was starting Game 1. Davey Lopes was the Brewers manager and Jerry Royster the Bench Coach.

Although, we've had our troubles in the past at PNC. This is a different team and I have faith. Oliver Perez does scare me. But we managed to get some solid production against him in May. Just keep Jason Kendall and Jack Wilson off the bases.

This is a great day for me. I'm in Milwaukee for the long weekend, and this is the first time in well over a decade that I get to watch a good Brewers team on TV. Monday we're going to Miller Park.

Sorry to get personal, but I'm very, very happy right now. Go Brewers!!!

Greg.

Jenks deserves a break...lets hope that Ginter can roam the outfield like a pro...this sure could sure up our right field situation http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I was thinking that maybe Overbay could slide to the OF and Grieve to first base but this makes a heck of a lot more sense.

Ginter gets at bats and we find a RF w/o trade/promotion.... this could be a very good deal

Actually, I don't mind that lineup given a lefty on the mound.

Is either game on tv tonight?

Yep, my FSN is listing both games as being on the tube. I'm thinking about taking the TV and a big cooler out to the patio and soaking up the sun and a doubleheader.

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

One week with DISH Network, and I'm already a happy camper. I live in eastern Iowa, squarely in Chicago sports land, mostly the Cubs. I get Fox Sports Chicago, etc. The best thing about Sheets' 18K game was that it was against the Braves, so I got to watch it on TBS.

DISH, though, has 5 sports programming channels. I was able to watch two of the three Rockies games (yesterday's being during the work day) and yes, they are showing the double header today. Both games. Can I get a hell yes?
