7/9/2004: Reds (Harang) @ Brewers (Capuano)

Maybe if Jenkins wasn't working that big freakin' piece of tobacco every time he's at the plate, he could concentrate on laying off of the junk in the dirt. Does that guy look lost or what?

Jenkins is about as to strike out as Dunn. Once he gets to two strikes its over. Just throw someing low and inside or a slider away and he'll swing every time. EVERY TIME.

Those 3 runs may as well be 10.

I don't know about you guys but these two Red's games have been the most frustrating games to watch all year.

What is with Wisconsin teams. Always get the fans excited with big wins over major opposition and then IMMEDIATELY proceed to play like garbage versus teams they should be able to beat.

My Brewer Fever is at a season low.

They didn't hit well against the Cubs, either. Aaron Harang has been dealing, and that, combined with our offensive struggles, has handcuffed us at the plate. Its hard to know just how much of the blame should go to the Brewers and how much credit should go to Harang, but its obvious that he's pitching very well.

Its perplexing, but I don't think we should enter full-out "our offense sucks" mode just yet. I don't know, though... tough to watch when our pitching is so solid - Cappy looks really good tonight.

Oh, and don't fret... in Peavey, we must trust.

With Sheets and Santos going the next two days, who are we saving the bullpen for? Matt Wise couldn't pitch the 7th? No way Capuano should have led off the 6th! The Brewers absolutely must lead the league in called strikes looked at. Sucky, sucky Friday night so far.

Gawd, that strike em out, throw em out Ginter-Hall play was hideous. Keith just can't be loking at a called third strike on a pitch that close on a 2-2 count. It almost looks like Bill Hall slows down as he prepares to slide into second each time.

Did I say sucky, sucky Friday night so far?

I think this team should be sellers. Lets start by putting all the bats up on EBAY. We don't use them and they are in nearly mint condition. There must be a table leg in the clubhouse everyone can walk up there with and wave around.

So am I seeing things when I view Jim Reynolds' strike zone as gigantic? I don't think so. Thanks to BP's Umpire Stats, here are the stats of hitters during games he's called compared to the league average:

 AVG OBA SLG ----------------------------- Reynolds .255 .319 .384 Overall .262 .328 .420

So in games Reynolds' calls, the batting average of players drops seven points, their on-base average drops nine points, and their slugging average drops thirty-six points. That's a 25 point drop in OPS.

That's a lot.

There are probably better ways to measure this, but it would require additional number crunching. This should give you a good idea of Reynolds' strike zone, though.

EDIT: Pitchers' Run Averages in games called is probably a good way to measure umpires' relative strikes/balls tendencies. Here are the umpires with the *lowest* Runs Allowed Averages.

Umpire RA -------------------- Doug Eddings 3.36 Tim Timmons 3.63 Brian Runge 3.83 John Hirschbeck 3.94 Jim Reynolds 3.99

Interesting stuff. I'm glad the numbers bear out my observations... consider this a blessed union of stats and scouting. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

5 teams have a SLG% under .400,we are one of them. Those teams rankings in runs scored are

25th,27th,28th,29th,30th.

Last year teams with a SLG under .400 finished

26th,27th,28th,29th,30th in runs scored

Can't score runs without power, popgun offenses don't cut it.

Adam Dunn just had a Ben Grieve moment. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Nice to see Matt Erickson get an AB... it was a pretty nice at-bat, too, despite the outcome.

EDIT: Hey, whaddayaknow? Another Ben Grieve moment, this time from Aaron Harang. Fortunately, that error (err, "single") means no more Harang. C'mon, Counsell... be clutch http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .

Am I seeing things, or was that a substantially thinner Geoff Jenkins that just popped out to right? What's up with the big swing, Craig? We love you 'cause you *don't* do that... we see enough big swings from Jenkins to last a lifetime.

Oh well. We'll get one more chance in the ninth with Jenks, Overbay, and Grieve... just gotta hold 'em scoreless here and hope for the best.
