7-10-2004: Reds (Lidle) @ Brewers (Sheets)

JaNelson52

Vuckovich was never that great in Milwaukee. the best seasons by a Milwaukee starter were by Mike Caldwell in 1978 (22-9, 293 innings, 160 ERA+) and Teddy Higuera in 1986 (20-11, 248 innings, 156 ERA+) and 1988 (16-9, 227 innings, 162 ERA+).

Ben is on pace to pass those seasons. Ben is on pace for about 230-240 innings and about 16-18 wins. Those numbers don't compare to Caldwell's season but as of right now, I estimate that Sheets is on pace for an ERA+ of somewhere between 180-200, which would put him somewhere in the top 90 seasons of all-time.

Just got back from the game, couple of observations...

Awesome crowd. We didn't have tickets so we were part of the walkup. I was shocked to get to the booth and be told it was either standing room only or lower infield box. This was over a full hour before gametime. We took the box seats and were row 17 right behind the plate. Being that close to Sheets' dominance was worth the $70 for 2 tickets.

That field really is dark. I can understand why some teams have complained about the lighting. Those lights atop MP must be at least 50% further from the playing surface than at County Stadium. I've been to MP many times but from right behind the plate you can really tell the difference.

I was real excited to see Hall in the lineup for a 2nd consecutive game. I had a good feeling before the game and he proved me right. I thought getting back-to-back games might finally let him get settled in on the 2nd night. 1-2 and 2 walks...he looked 10 times more capable up there than Helms. Hall NEEDS to be in the lineup tommorrow.

Glad to see Ginter go after the 1st fastball in that last ab. Too often he watches the 1 fastball he gets go by and then he's lost trying to hit breaking stuff.

Now I have to go look up Halls batting average in games where he played a full game the night before. I bet it's pretty solid. It would be nice to give the guy a shot at getting in a groove up there.

i was at the game tonight, and unfortunately wasn't able to get any tickets, and had to settle for standing room only. i got to stand right behind home plate, so it could have been a lot worse, though.

i have a question though. on both the brady clark (?) double and the diving catch by geoff jenkins, both outfielders seemed unable to get a read on the ball. was this due to the sun shining through the glass panels?

Quote:

Ginter with a pick on "an absolute shorthot smash" with "base hit written all over it" to end it. I'm down with that. Anybody see it?

I just watched it over at MLB.com, the camera didn't quite keep up with the ball, so you miss the stab, but it still looked darn impressive. Even the Reds announcers kind of laughed and said it was just "that kind of night".

Tonight was just great.

- Genuine summer weather

- A big crowd **that was largely Brewers fans** http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

- Ben being the man (again)

- Some home team offense

- And bobbleheads of Gorman, the first Brewer I worshipped - and we scored one in each uniform (blue and white).

I almost don't want the all-star break to interfere.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I was in the LF bleachers and had a good angle on both plays. The sun didn't leave that area until about the 4th inning so it's possible that the sun made it more difficult to read.
