How good is Ben Sheets?

His ERA is at 2.30, and yet another stellar K/BB game. The guy is Bob Gibsonesque right now.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

By the way, it looks like Kolb and Sheets will see action in the All-Star game. I didn't think this needed its own thread.

MLB.com

"He said he'd probably use [sheets] for an inning, but if he needed to use him for two, that'd be alright," Yost said, adding that McKeon would do everything possible to also get Kolb into the game as well.

"He also said to tell [Lyle] Overbay that he was big-time considered, but there was nothing he could do with all those first basemen," Yost said. "He sure wished he could have taken him, but it just didn't work out that way. I thought that was nice."

Heck, it's nice to know that Lyle gave McKeon some tough choices.

Personally, I'm glad Ben is going to see an inning in the game. Blah blah blah, injury risk, blah blah blah, rotation setup after the break, blah blah blah.

It's a big honor for the guy, and he should enjoy it, and get a chance to play an inning.

More pitches for Ben is not a good idea... he's already going to have his usual routine screwed up by the All-Star Game, and our bullpen should be fully rested. He's been dealing, but there's no reason to unnecessarily get him into the 120-pitch range.

Just MHO, of course, but I'm right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

If Brady Clark needs to play, why can't he give Geoff Jenkins a night off? Or why can't Grieve play LF for a night or two?

Jenks looks pathetic up there right now. He is making a ton of money, and is barely above replacement level.

Don't totally disagree, but Tuesday's All-Star game is exactly three days after his start tonight, and most pitchers throw on the side three days after a start.

Hopefully Ben goes with orders from Ned that he gets only one batter. The Brewers need him to pitch the first day after the break on Thursday.

Well, Ben was pretty efficient... still, 116 pitches is a little excessive when he could have been done with just over 100.

It's not like there's a huge difference in this one game between 7/8 innings and 100/116 pitches, but with the All-Star Game coming up I would have preferred we be as conservative as possible with Big Ben. Nedley has done a great job of limiting people's pitch counts and innings, so I don't want to sound too negative... that's one of Nedley's best attributes, IMO, and this wasn't a *terrible* decision, certainly.

Ben is just unbelievable. This is like watching the Pedro of a few seasons ago, only he's *ours*.

Magic Formula:

1. Hold on for the Sheets' win tonight.

2. The Vampire has some daytime fun Sunday -- win.

3. Cubbies lose again at STL Sunday.

4. Giants lose either tonight or Sunday vs. ARZ.

That, my friends, will have the Brewers in the wild card lead by percentage points at the All-Star Break, and wouldn't that be a topic of discussion for the Fox broadcast team Tuesday night!

I agree...and while I am a realist too, as a realist you also have to consider the fact that this team is for real, and can truly stay in the hunt for the wild card for a good long while. The pitching is more than good enough...and if guys like Jenks, Pods, and Helms would just be league average, the offense would get as much juice as trading for another bat would give them.

You mean, other than...

... how dreamy Derek Jeter is.

... how the Red Sox can't manufacture runs or play defense because their GM is a geek.

... whether the Yankees or Red Sox will get Randy Johnson.

... whether the Yankees or Red Sox will get Roger Clemens.

... how dreamy Derek Jeter is.

That sure does sound like a Magic Formula, MB... I'm a little worried about Sleepy tomorrow, but in Peavey I still trust.
