7/11/2004 - Brewers (Santos) vs. Reds (Acevedo)

I feel like I've been run over by a truck. I was looking ahead to the bottom half, looking up matchups, and generally just taking it for granted that Kolb would hold the Reds' scoreless.

This must be how the Dodgers' fans felt when Gagne blew a save.

I don't like it.

I resigned myself to get positive about halfway through this thread...BUT

Wes Helms is not even a major league calibur player at this point. He can't even field a grounder anymore. Yes, I know it took a tough hop but major leaguers make that play once in awhile.

Please replace that stiff.

And let's rally...I haven't given up on this one yet.

Now Bill, you are the last perosn I would think who would say throw @ a guy. If the Pitcher can't get em out, then why get mad @ the hitter.

If you don't like Willy mo doing the "Slow Mo" on teh bases, then get him out.

Nice job, Jeff Bennett. I feel obligated to make up for my previous indiscretions against you by pointing it out everytime you do something good. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I still can't believe what just happened... It was a lot easier to handle with Mike DeJean, 'cause we all expected something like this to happen every few days (or more often, last year). With Kolb, its been just automatic. Same with Mike Adams, for that matter, although to a lesser extent.

At least we get to face Danny Graves. C'mon, Griever.

Yeah, you're right... it was a knee-jerk, emotional reaction. I wouldn't throw at him... I don't like it when people get thrown at, period.

But that Slow Mo deal is really unprofessional, and I don't like it. One of the veterans on the Reds club needs to take him aside and let him know that it isn't cool. I don't mind a little ManRam/Griffey "admire it for a second" styling at home plate. But to do a little dance at every base and generally act like a total baffoon is unacceptable.

Thanks for keeping me in check, davego.

Only good thing is Bennett, who has hit the wall a touch, gets to go into the break on an up note.

Pulling your closer in the middle of an inning is depressinghttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/sick.gif

Well, Kudos to Viz and Bennett, who were the only guys in the bullpen to get the job done today.

And kudos to the Reds who finally made Kolb and Adams look human.

Lets face it folks, the 'pen has been phenominal for us this year, almost super-human. We're spoiled because we haven't had to deal with many games like this in 2004.

Batman,

You can study his 25 or so innings as a reliever all you want, but I'm sure you will concede it screams small sample size. Kinney has a 1.54 WHIP and an ERA of over 5.19 in 350 IP.

That ain't no good http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

This will be a tough game to sit on for 4 days.

Of course. But to argue that he hasn't been effective as a reliever isn't true, and that's really what I was trying to get at. That, and some friendly jabs at RoCo. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Tough game. Crappy way to head into the break.

But I'm with Peavey. The pen has been phenomenal all season, and this team is so much better than anyone expected that its hard to get too upset.

Fun game thread, guys... thanks for hanging out today!

Tough one. I couldn't be more excited with the first half that the crew put together. They need to buckle down through this tough streach in July and keep fighting the good fight. I believe that we really do have a shot at the wild card.

The key will be Jenks and Pods coming around and Hendrickson being our lastest batch of lightening in a bottle.

Just got back from the game.

pathetic.

For a larger crowd, there wasn't much energy, and the entire team seemed lethargic.

Helms D was atrocious. Not only booting the ball (was ruled a single, but no way...), but not getting to balls that should be his. At one point C.C. was forced to make a tough play from the hole, because Helms didn't hustle to cut the ball off up the middle. He doesn't appear to ever get fully ready before the pitch either. I wonder if that is why he has the reaction time of stone.

Pods D was horrible too. Misplayed at least two balls, and had one of the worst throws I've ever seen in major league baseball from shallow center with a runner rounding third. I think that Pods can be an average CF, but we can officially say that last year was a fluke.

I almost left early, because I was so upset with the way the team played, and the managing. Although Santos had been struggling I would have left him in to get the last out instead of bringing in Kinney. If they were going to take him out, they should have done it at the start of the inning.

uuugggghhhh!!!!

Melvin needs to trade some of our bullpen for no other reason than we don't need 8 guys out there. The starters have shown that they can consistently get through 6-7 innings meaning that guys in the pen are not going to get as much work. When you have guys like Burba, Kinney, Bennett, Wise etc. that only pitch once every six or seven days they are bound to be ineffective when they do get the chance.

I'd be happy to have Adams, Viz, and Bennett as setup men, Kolb as a closer, and Burba and Wise as long relief.

Agreed. The middle and long relievers are not getting enough work to keep the rust off.

Dump Kinney. Dump Jeff Bennett.

Kieschnick, Wise, and Burba in long relief.

Kolb as the closer.

Vizcaino for the 8th.

Adams for the 7th.

At this point, I'd say sell at the end of the month. The Brewers will not make the playoffs and chasing the 85th win for this year does not make sense.

Deal Grieve, Santos, and Counsell - see what we can get in return. Stock up for 2005-2008.

SenatorShriv is on target - that was about the quietest 31,000+ crowd I've been in, including during the first. Even the few Reds fans we saw weren't doing anything during their team's comeback.

I was as disappointed as anyone else in the pitching lapse(s) - let's make Victor's nickname "Night-n-Day" - but Brooks' double in the 9th was the first non-Overbay hit since the first-inning parade of singles. That's more damaging. You need a strategy other than "score early and hold on".

Something interesting we noticed midway through the game (before the pitching went south): Everyone in the bullpen seemed to have their arms raised at one point. I got out the binoculars and saw that they had created an arch by holding up their caps - for Kolb to walk under. It was kind of like a royal entrance. This was charming until the 9th. Now I'd prefer they didn't try it again.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
