07/22/2004 - Brewers (Sheets) at Cardinals (Marquis)

batman
I'm thinking of going to live up on a local billboard until the Brewers score a run as a charity promotion. I could get people to sponsor me for every hour I'm up there. It would be a great way to raise a few thousand dollars. Maybe I could do it in conjunction with the Brewers organization...you know, go live on one of the signs by Miller Park for the CAP fund. I'm sure it would be a nice ploy to get people to come to the park. I might be up there for a while, but I hear the weather is supposed to nice for the next week or so. Food donations will be appreciated.

How 'bout Webb and Lowe, though? They're on a whole 'nother planet in terms of inducing groundballs, although neither has been successful this year.

Bill, take another look at Webby.

4 or more ER only 4 times this year.

3.82 ERA

fewer hits than IP

Webby is having a great year on a terrible team. Kind of amazing. You can see why when AZ called about Sexson last May, we told them all offers started with Webb.

I remember that 33 inning streak in spring training that was mostly played with regulars where the Crew went scoreless, and I and a some others made comments about needing to expect that with the low SLG% offense we have, and the immediate response was "too small a sample size! It's just spring training! Doom and Gloom before the season even starts!"

Well guess what.

28th in SLG. 28th in runs. Not only is this team not FUN to watch right now, it's hardly watchable at all.

If there is no such thing as "clutch" That must mean that the Brewer offense is just really really bad.

This team is definitely average and has been fun to watch. I think they can finish at or above .500 but the offense is really, really bad and there is no way around it.

I can feel we are getting closer to seeing some minor leaguers up with the big team . . .

7rebmun

what minor leaguers? Do you think Hart is ready? How about Krynzel?

Both will be called up in Sept since they're on the 40-man, but I seriously doubt either will be here to stay until the allstar break next year.

Yep, you're totally right... I think I conflated his numbers with someone else's, 'cause when I was looking up Marquis' GB:FB ratio I thought Webb's ERA was like 5.25 or something.

Since we haven't played the Dbacks for a while, they are a terrible team, and he's not on any of my fantasy squads, I haven't paid enough attention to BWebb. Looks like he's doing just as well as one would have hoped... too bad we couldn't have included him in the Sexson deal - we got everything else we wanted. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

You know what, it IS OK to be .500. I refuse to let this board set the Brewers up EVERY year as disappointments. You can't just take the high point of a team's year and say their goal should be 5 games above that. With nearly the worst offense in baseball, the Brewers are .500. What the hell ya want?

At the risk of receiving a crushing jaw shot from RoCo, I think it should be pointed out that the Brewers had ten hits tonight. We only had one walk, though, and all of the hits were singles, but that's a lot better than the four and five hit nights of our recent past. Chad Moeller went 3-for-3 with a walk, too, which is great to see. Maybe both of our catchers will finally start hitting a bit... that would definitely help the offense, although it's not going to make that much of a difference.

Sheets' struggles tonight just make Santos' outing last night look more incredible. The Cardinals' offense is really, really good, and Santos (plus the bullpen) held them to three hits (and two of them were by Woody Williams).

The offensive futility is very disappointing, though, certainly. We have the same collection of players we had earlier in the season when we were hitting well enough, so its not as if we can't score more runs. I don't think this team will ever be above average (or even average) offensively, but they could definitely be a lot less bad than they are right now. I'm sure we all have suggestions for how they can fix things, but honestly I'm sure Wynegar and Yost are trying everything in their power and the players are doing their best.

Unlike the Cubs, this team hasn't given up or lost its cool under the pressures of failure. Before getting too angry with their ineptitude with the stick, try to remember that. I'm not saying we oughtn't complain, but let's try to keep this civil. I feel a forum-wide meltdown coming on, but hopefully I'm wrong.

This sucks, but at least we're not the Cubs, right?

I have no freaking clue where the friggin OFFENSE went?????!!!!!

As for rluzinkski's comment. I don't think people are dissapointed. They may be frustrated, because with a good offense, this team could be ahead in the WC race. I mean .500 is great but I think that we could easily be at least 5-6 above if our offense produces. I don't think anyone predicted this team to be this good this year. It is actually kind of nice to have MUST WIN games unlike past years. I am optomistic and hopeful that this could be the begginning of a string of good years.

Agreed, Batman. At least they're not completely falling apart. They're still a bunch of gritty battlers, and they're playing a very difficult part of their schedule right now - and their pitching isn't falling apart, which is excellent. I fully expect to see them go on a tear again, hopefully very, very soon - when it still matters. However, we are not hearing the death rattle of the 2004 Milwaukee Brewers. There are still nearly 70 games remaining in the season, and this team's not done making noise.

Well, last week someone said (JaNelson, I believe) "Generally, if you walk 9 times in a game, you'll at least score a few runs"

And tonight,

"we DID get ten hits"

Bill, I'm sorry if you feel like I'm picking on you today man!

BUT..........

I think we're beyond the point of making shallow excuses for the offense and believing an outburst is around the corner.

Also

I'd hope that people would understand that the "right hook" comment was in jest.

But EVERY TIME WE LOSE lately, there's a dozen posts about how "we shouldn't be dissapointed because we never expected to be this good in the first place."

I'm sorry. It's getting old. Of course we didn't expect to be .500 on July 22. But 6-13 in the last 19 games, against divisional foes no less, with an offense that's bordering on becoming the worst in the league...........

The fact that we're .500 doesn't mean I'm not sick of watching this offense squander runner after runner and fail to score on a nightly basis against mediocre to decent pitchers.

RoCoBrewerfan is right about alot of things.

But even though I was someone who earlier this week kind of started this "happy with .500" stuff, a lot of us have to start becoming realists. It seems that many feel that these games are as big as the World Series. Well, they're not. It's game 96 (or whatever it is). Alot of ball left to play. This is a very tough part of the schedule and it's showing how good a team the Brewers really are (aka Not very good). We all knew coming into July that this month would show if we are good, bad, or just average.

But things have to improve--how can they get any worse?

I think the Brewers can easily go .500 or better the rest of the way. And the offense WILL come around. Perhaps playing in Houston Metropolitan Little League Field will help.

argh, i know i joined this site and all this year making it seem i am a "bandwagoner" but i really dont consider myself one, i just cant stand watching bad baseball, it is incredibly boring. The brewers are playing bad baseball, 1 or 2 more o-fers in houston, and i just dunno anymore. I wonder if the entire parent club's position players can be sent down for like a week (even overbay, just because i said so), and the entire AAA position players can be called up.....*sigh*.......

by the way,

As a D-back Fan also (sorry), Brandon Webb's disappointing season is because of two things:

1) Offense stinks (sounds familiar)

2) too many walks issued

Otherwise, batting average allowed is excellent.
