07/22/2004 - Brewers (Sheets) at Cardinals (Marquis)

Big Ben will need to play the familiar role of stopper today or the Brewers will fall back to .500. He's 9-6 with a 2.28 ERA while Jason Marquis is 9-4 with an ERA of 4.03. Game time is 7:10 PM CDT.

Here are the rest of the matchups in the NL Central, thanks to SlideBernieSlide:

- Cubs at Reds [Cory Lidle ( 6-7, 4.79 ) and Greg Maddux ( 8-7, 4.18 ) ]

- Astros at Diamondbacks [Roy Oswalt ( 8-8, 3.99 ) and Casey Fossum ( 2-8, 6.04 )]

- Pirates at Braves [Kip Wells ( 4-6, 4.61 ) and Russ Ortiz ( 11-6, 3.50 )]

Hopefully the offense can put together a few runs and cut down on the doomsaying for at least a few hours. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I predict a 1-0 win in 45 innings tonight. Sheets will go 33 1/3 scoreless innings. Podsednik will go 2x13, but be caught stealing both times he reaches base.

Solo homer by Gary Bennett, catching his 24th inning, to win it.

This could be the biggest "Must win" ball game of the year.

-The Brewers are only 1 above .500

-They are falling behind in the WC race (5 games back)

-They are going to probably have the first losing month of the year. As of now they are 6-12.

Just a few important facts about tonight.

It's a little nonsensical to say they're going to lose touch with BOTH the Reds and Cubs when in fact they're playing each other. Really they're guaranteed to at worst keep pace with one of them.

Cubs meltdown update: Zambrano suspended for 5, Hawkins for 3.

Tonight's lineups are brought to you by -- Holy change up Batman!! Helms 4? Overbay 5?? The only thing crazier would be to bat Grieve 3 and Jenks 7 tomorrow. Who knows, Nedley's getting creative in his old age...

I like it. Helms maybe needs this to give him some confidence. Lyle needs this to get his head screwed on straight. Too bad Yost didn't bump Jenkins to 6th though.

I'll bet LaRussa had trouble holding back the giggles when he got the lineup card this evening.

Imagine him telling the St. Louis media: "Well, we only scored one run last night, so I decided to swap Pujols and Rolen's spots with Roger Cedeno and John Mabry. That sounded like a good way to get things going to me."

I like that Ned is getting creative with the lineup. Hopefully something can jumpstart this offense. I'm not so sure about Overbay in the five slot, but we'll see. Benny's location tonight has been downright bad. You don't need to put the ball over the middle of the plate with an 0-2 count.
