8/3/2004: Brewers (Capuano) vs. Mets (Leiter)

brettac1

Fresh off an invigorating comeback win, series victory, and day off, the Crew go back to work today to keep the ball rolling toward that magical land of .500 ball. Pleasant surprise Chris Capuano (5-5, 3.66) takes the hill against Al Leiter (7-3, 2.18 ) , still one of the better pitchers in the game. Capuano has never faced the Mets and is 2-2 at home this year with a 3.03 ERA spanning 6 starts and 35.2 innings. Leiter has essentially dominated the Brewers over his career (10-2, 3.51, 18 G, 14 GS). On the road this year, Leiter is 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA, .181 BAA. The key in my mind for the Brewers is to take the walks that Leiter likes to give out (55 BB/103.1 IP) and get him out early to get to the suspect Met bullpen that now is home to Mike DeJean.

I with you guys. I'm still watching Brewers. Thinking about what a [explitive] Mike McKenzie is, but still watching and rooting for the Crew.

I'm actually eagarly anticipating September so I can watch Yost not play any of the kids http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

This should be a good series with the Mets. I like the matchup. I look for Branyan to go 3-13 with 3HRs http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

_I_ care, because as I said in another thread, I have a $100 bet with my buddy that the Brewers will finish better than the Mets this year. So this series is gonna be huge fer me.

Despite what everyone keeps saying, this team still can put together a run and get back into the wild card picture. Lets say for instance that Milwaukee sweeps NY and takes 2 of 3 from Florida. That would put the Brewers at 56-54 and probably within 3-4 games of the WC spot. Anything can happen, and a winning stretch of 15-5 or something could make things interesting again.

I am not saying its likely, but I AM saying that the fate of the team still rests with the players to get it done. Winning 15 out of 20 isnt impossible.

I wonder if this is Overbay's day off and who will play first if it is. Is Ginter ready and along with Counsell and Clark they can wait take some 7 pitch at bats. This is a tough stretch again but they have broken out a couple times lately. Let's start averaging 5 runs a game and take it from there. That's not asking too much is it?

Go Brewers!

Going to the game tonight, and I had a thought (or stroke of brilliance) this morning. What if we were to hit Capuano 8th and Moeller/Bennett ninth. The left-handed Bagwell (what I refer to Cappy as) sure can hit and puts it in play.

Yea and the Yankees could lose 15 out of 20 or Helms could hit 15 homers the next 2 months. The odds any of the three happen are 5% at best.

We are out of it,.500 looks a stretch at this point.

I agree that anything above .500 looks pretty unlikely, but I seem to remember a 10-game winning streak last year. Everyone would have said that was just (more?) as unlikely then. Crazy things happen in baseball...

Danzig, I looked at the schedule this month and felt optimistic about our chances of being .500 entering September. We have Sheets, Davis, Santos, and Cappy going in 22 of 26 games and we're facing some teams that we seem to hold our own against. We usually do alright vs the Mets, we beat up on the Marlins our first two years in the NL, we do okay agains the Braves, and at least .500 vs the Cubs. The teams we play that we seem to struggle with are the Pirates and Phillies, but both are beatable.

Maybe if we keep mentioning Russ Branyan's stats against left handers someone on the Brewers will read one of these threads and notice???????????????????

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
