8/14/2004: Brewers (De La Rosa) v. Marlins (Willis)

brettac1

Ya, what a moron he is for sending a 360 hitter to the plate when his best PH has a strained calf.

Obermueller isn't a terrible hitter, but when he is the first guy you look to on the bench to PH - and there is no bunt involved - I'm sorry, but then in my view the manager is certifiably nuts.

Mike Hampton is a good hitter, but Bobby Cox wouldn't look for him first to PH. Same would be true for Tom Glavine in NY. Or Kerry Wood in Chicago (who hit a HR today, by the way).

If Obermueller can hit so good, he should learn how to play somewhere in the field. He sure as hell hasn't proven much of anything on the mound, other than a couple of decent starts here and there in two seasons.

Mass, I'm a big Grieve defender, but I also have to agree with you on this one. I didn't see it, but I could tell from Powell's call, (and sarcasm) that it wasn't pretty.

I'd like to know what % of Grieve's K's are looking, and how that compares to league average. If there is a single guy in baseball who is (at times) TOO patient at the plate, it's Ben Grieve.

Just got back from being out and see that Durrington is starting at 3rd, and Helms at 1st! What's up with that? Also, how did DLR's major league debut go? Doesn't look like he did too well judging by his numbers but I didn't get to see it, the first game is always tough. Thanks.

JDLR's first and last innings were a little tough, but not ridiculously bad. The innings in between were uneventful.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

There you go, there is Brewer baseball at its finest for the last couple months. Since only one guy per inning can hit, just keep stealing till they throw you out, better chances then waiting to get hit in. After abut the 20th f bomb tongiht my wife has finally had enough and has told me to shut the game off.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif

Hey, can you tell me what happened with Powell's call and how it involved Grieve? I happen to like Grieve a lot (biased because I'm a fan of his), but wanted to see what happened. Thanks.

I didn't hear any e-mail question answered tonight. When is that typically done? If anyone heard one, what was the question that Jim addressed?

This is where our management will begin to see the self fulfilling prophesy.

The average fan will see Durrington on third with nobody out. We butcher it and get no runs.

The other team get a guy on third with no outs, and promply score him.

The average fan will just go home and think 'I am not going to pay money to watch that crap. It is embarrassing to be a Brewer fan when our number two batter is on third. Then our 3-4-5 batters have about as much chance of scoring him as the Bee Gees.'

The management should simply fold the franchise. They are not serious about selling. They are only stalling so they can all each have a few hundred grand salary a year.

The commissioners office should look into this joke of a management.

Honestly, guys, if you get to see the pitches he watched -- you could just hear the venom dripping in Jim Powell's accompanying call.

I did see it, and it certainly wasn't pretty.

Perhaps its a pathetic attempt at a defense, but Grieve has had a whole three PA's this week, and all of a sudden, he is asked to PH against Dontrelle Willis in the most important at-bat of the game, at that point. Personally, I would have gone with Overbay in that situation.

Every hitter in the big leagues have looked especially foolish at the plate at some point, especially when you are caught looking on a fastball right down the middle.

oh, I'm sorry, I'm sure I'll be reminded about his OPS or his batting practice HR's shortly.

Fine, I'll bite...Despite the fact that Brady Clark has been hot over the last two weeks, his OPS is still some 25 points lower than Grieve. He is STILL one of only three semi-regular players with an OPS over .750.

When Grieve starts sucking, I'll say that he is sucking. But to take a shot at Grieve, who really hasn't played poorly at all this year, or to take shots at some of us who defend why he should be playing by using the actual numbers, is kind of unfair.

And UNTIL the man who is taking the majority of playing time in RF actually starts posting better numbers than Grieve has this year, I will continue to defend Grieve.

OK, out of curiosity, I figured I'd do a little study

 June PA's OPS Grieve 58 .673 Clark 61 .811 July Grieve 65 .800 Clark 70 .841 August Grieve 16 .521 Clark 39 .886

Take from that what you will, but in the same amount of PA in June and July (just about), Brady outperformed Ben. Yes, the whole season counts, but I have no problem going with the hot hand.

For the record, I think Grieve should be playing over Podsednik, but at this point in time, I have no problem with Brady getting the bulk of the playing time.

I've had the game on all night (pain, how I love thee), but I never heard Jim answer an e-mail. I may have missed it at some point.
I haven't been far from the radio. I think we should continue to send in that question until we hear something.

The sound of Wendy upping her pettty cash allocation for next year.

Luis just cost himself 100k in arbitration.

It is all coming together for Wendy. Sheets will finish the year 9-15. His arby numbers will drop from 6 million range to 3 million.

Ching ching.

Adams was probably due a small 'thank you' pay rise, but he gave up 4 runs yesterday.

Ching ching. 50 grand saved.

Kolb has stuggled in a couple of games lately. Not enough for Wendy, but

Ching ching.... probably can save 500k with a bad game or two on top of the wee late struggles.

Santos... was going for the 'thank you' pay rise, but Wendy keeps starting him in the daylight.

Ching ching... 100k saved.

Kinney picked up by KC.

Ching Ching... 50 k saved.

Wendy will be rolling in it next year.
