08/21/2004 - Brewers (Obermueller) vs. Phillies (Padilla)

The Larry Bowa termination watch continues. Wes Obermueller pitches.

Ben Grieve and Russell Branyan both get the nod.

I agree completely. Maybe the most underrated great player in the sport. Either him or Barry Bonds when people suggest that there's actually competition for the MVP award.

I really wish that the Brewers would contract with a television station that would carry all 162 of its team's games. Even if they skimp on the weekday afternoon games, at least broadcast all of the evening/night games.

It's a shame, really. Their ratings are through the roof compared to any reasonable expectations, and yet FSN is carrying only the minimum number of games specified in their contract. Boo.

Re: the game, Obermueller had quite an adventurous first inning that required 24 pitches to complete. He looked (or rather sounded like!) Victor Zambrano out there... strikeout, walk, strikeout, walk, ground-out.

Nice job getting out of it, but Obie's got to have better control.

I can barely get WMCS to come in, and apparently all of the other affiliates within range are broadcasting the Packers' pre-game.

It's like they're trying to make it as difficult as possible to be a fan of the Brewers. I went to the game last night, but I can't afford to go *every* night... sometimes it is nice to watch the game on TV even for us locals, ya' know?

Me no likey.

The fuzziness from my radio is giving me a headache, so I'm just going to give up and rely on MLB.com's Gameday. If anybody is successfully tuning in, either via radio or MLB.tv, please hook us up with any interesting info that wouldn't come across on Gameday.

It looked like the second and third strike to Branyan and the third strike to Grieve were all pretty high, but obviously Padilla is dealing.

Jason Michaels just led-off the third with a bunt base hit to third. Was Branyan playing back and just didn't have a chance? Was there a bobble? No error recorded, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Thanks all... this will have to be a real team effort. Packers are on in 13 minutes, but multitasking is what all the cool kids are doing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

More fun in the third from everyone's favorite Wes... he's now at 64 pitches, 33 of them strikes. Michaels reached on a bunt single, Abreu grounded to first (with Michaels moving up 90 feet), Thome popped-out in foul territory to Branyan, Utley walked, and Bell grouned to Branyan, who threw to second for the force.

At this rate, Obie will have difficulty making it out of the fifth on pitch count alone. Efficiency, Obie Wan, is the key to greatness. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Obermueller has some crazy voodoo working today. He's now at 86 pitches through four innings and has walked five and struck-out four. Jason Michaels hit a ground-rule double to leadoff the fourth but was stranded at third. Nice work.

We don't want to take his bat out of the lineup, but I would imagine that Obermueller is not going to be able to keep this up much longer. One more inning, max, and it would be a good idea to bring in some relief.

Not listening today. Has JP confirmed this transaction?

From Adam McCalvy . . .

In a busy day of player moves Friday, the organization promoted outfielder Ryan Knox from Huntsville to Indianapolis, outfielder Ben Van Iderstine from High Desert to Huntsville and infielder Hernan Iribarren from the rookie Arizona league to Beloit.

Jim Powell called him "Houdini Obermueller".

Stats through 4 innings:

H: 3

BB: 5

K: 4

Pitches: ***86***

Balls: 41

Strikes: 45

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Another tidbit on the radio broadcast:

Russ Branyan has two of the three longest homers at Miller Park. I knew about that longest one, but didn't know about the other.
