I still don't understand what goes through Nedley's head sometimes. He's gone on and on in the past about how Brady Clark is a good #2 hitter and he breaks up the lefties while Craig Counsell is a great #8 hitter. Then he puts Counsell seventh before Moeller and puts Hall in a table-setting spot (#2) and Clark in a run-producing spot (#6). I know he's talked about "shaking things up", but when this is your collection of players, his initial ideas made the most sense.

It doesn't really matter, but it's encouraging when your manager says intelligent things and then implements them. When he does the opposite, it is discouraging.

And on a related but different subject, here's the "MassBrew On-Base Party" update for a few of our favorites:

Scott Podsednik: .314

Geoff Jenkins: .307

Billy Hall: .282

At least Hall isn't making a lot of money. Although compared to Jenkins, neither is Podsednik.

Bad yuck boo.

Oh, and in the "You Know You Really Suck When..." category, Chad Moeller must be looking over his shoulder 'cause Gary The Glove is catching him fast.

Chad Moeller: .267 on-base plus .316 slugging = 584 OPS

Gary Bennett: .273 on-base plus .303 slugging = 576 OPS

And just to illustrate the utter horribleness of those numbers, here's Neifi Perez' line in 2004 (one that finally got him released):

.276 on-base plus .295 slugging = 571 OPS

Yeah.

The only reason I really like Chad Moeller is because I think he's an upgrade defensively to Bennett.

That, and he'll be here next year. I'm with you, but it's pathetic how poorly these two fellas have hit this season. And neither of them is a defensive genius, either, certainly not in the same category as other bad-hitting catchers like Henry Blanco or Brad Ausmus.

I don't care which way they go next season, but I hope they either get a masher or a defensive whiz behind the plate. If we can't afford a complete catcher, at least get someone who excels at one side of the game.

I still think Mark Johnson would be better than Bennett or Moeller, especially if used in a platoon situation where he could just hit righties.

And BTW, Mark Johnson (Mark L. Johnson, our Triple-A catcher) went to the same high school (Warner Robins, GA) as Russell Branyan. I'm 99% sure they were in the same class and played for the same high school team, as both were drafted in 1994 directly out of high school. Interesting, no?

I agree, if either of them could just excel in one area, we would be better off. Maybe next year Johnson will get a shot and Bennett will be gone, we can only hope. Moeller is solid defensively and like you said, will be here next year. An average of .265+ for Moeller and a lot better OBP and OPS would be fantastic. Let's hope he can improve come the start of next season.

Dang, Russel missed strike 3 by about a foot and a half.

Careful, you spelled Russell wrong... hopefully rluzinski isn't reading this. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Here's a tip, I know I'm not a pro batting coach, but don't close your eyes when you're swinging!

LOL... that was an unusual strikeout for him, though, as he is pretty good about swinging at strikes and taking balls. That time, he must not have seen the ball out of Clement's hand or something, 'cause he really did miss by about a foot or more. Most of the time his strikeouts come on good pitches that he just misses, which is sort of like Adam Dunn's preferred method of fanning.

I love Three True Outcomes guys... I don't know what it is, but there's something beautiful about watching a guy like Dunn or Branyan hit.

In other news, it's not good when you're down 3-0 in the second and have little hope of winning. It's Wrigley, and I've still got faith, but it's probably misguided faith. Oh well. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Oh don't get me wrong Bill, I really do like Russ! I just had to point out that was an UGLY strike out, eh?

And I too have noticed that he strikes out swinging at *strikes*. I guess it's really little solace, when you're sitting on the bench, and you have one fewer out to play with, but I HAVE noticed that.

And Capuano is getting rocked all over Northside City Dump......err....I mean, Wrigley Field.

aaaaaaaaaand a hit batter. Wow, Caps has been *not good* lately, and I mean not good at all.

I need some novacaine, because this is approaching 2002 levels of pain.

Oh yeah, I know... and you're totally right. Like I said, I think he just didn't see the ball and so he decided to swing where he thought it might end up. I would think someone would rather just not swing in that situation, but not the Muscle. He doesn't get cheated http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .
