What a nice surprise that was listening to the Brewers game tonight when Jim Powell mentioned the perfecto to Ueck. We've been talking about Parra quite a bit this spring, noting that we've heard reports of his velocity returning to the mid-90s and how his status as a prospect should receive an equally impressive boost. This cements that, and definitely puts his name back in the minds of even those that casually follow the minors.

Congrats Manny Parra!

Manny Parra Tosses Perfect Game For Sounds!

ROUND ROCK, Texas ? Sounds left-hander Manny Parra made history on Monday evening at The Dell Diamond, throwing a perfect game in Nashville?s 3-0 victory over the Round Rock Express in his second Triple-A start.

The 24-year-old hurler was mobbed near the mound by teammates shortly after 9:43 p.m. as first baseman Brad Nelson gloved a game-ending popup off the bat of pinch-hitter Jesse Garcia as Parra etched his name into the record books.

The rare achievement was only the third nine-inning perfect game in the 104-year history of the Pacific Coast League ? and the second by a member of the Nashville Sounds. Tacoma?s John Halama threw the first on July 8, 2001 before the Sounds? John Wasdin duplicated the feat on April 7, 2003 at Greer Stadium.

Parra (1-1), who earned his first career Triple-A victory with the historic effort, set a new career high with 11 strikeouts in the contest. He previously fanned 10 batters on five occasions during the first four seasons of his pro career.

The southpaw, who threw 107 pitches including 77 strikes, did not face a three-ball count against any batter until the bottom of the seventh inning and worked through three-ball counts only three times all evening.

Parra?s perfect game was Nashville?s first no-hit effort since July 15, 2006, when Carlos Villanueva (7.0 IP), Mike Meyers (2.0 IP), and Alec Zumwalt (1.0 IP) combined on a no-no against Memphis at Greer Stadium. It was the sixth no-hit effort by a Sounds hurler (second perfect game) and 11th overall no-hitter in a game involving the Sounds in the club?s 30-year history.

The Nashville victory coupled with a loss by Iowa thrust the Sounds (45-32) back into first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Nashville jumped on the board in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Callix Crabbe (3-for-4) doubled to right and scored two batters later on Joe Dillon?s two-out RBI single to left off Express starter Matt Albers. On the play, Crabbe ran through Round Rock catcher Humberto Quintero to reach the plate safely.

The Sounds added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on Mike Rivera?s two-run double off Express reliever Paul Estrada, extending the lead to 3-0.

Albers (2-3) turned in an outstanding outing but drew the tough-luck loss for Round Rock. The right-hander allowed one run on eight hits while striking out six batters over seven innings of work.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. CT finale on Tuesday evening. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (3-1, 3.46), a winner in each of his last three starts, will man the bump for Nashville and face Round Rock right-hander Chan Ho Park (4-6, 5.79).

This is just one of those nights when you get shivers down your spine. The Brewers, loaded with young talent, are rolling.... Parra throws a perfect game.... Laporta signs... Villanueva and Gallardo aren't even officially in the rotation yet.

Isn't that the truth. Whenever I'm talking Brewers at work or whatever it's hard to keep the conversation on one topic or player without moving on to another young 20-something year old Brewer doing something awesome.

Nice work Manny.

So, 98 years without a perfect game, and now 3 in 6 years?

I blame steroids.

Here's hoping Parra doesn't follow the career path of Halama or Wasdin, and that we see him in our bullpen come August or September!

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 10, Huntsville 0

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Avery and Bruce Lead Lookouts to Victory

James Avery tossed eight scoreless innings and Jay Bruce homered twice and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in Chattanooga?s 10-0 blanking of Huntsville Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts improved to 6-2 in the second half of the season and 35-42 overall, while the Stars fell to 3-5 in the second half and 40-36 overall in suffering their worst defeat of the season. The Stars were held to three runs or less for a 12th time in the last 14 games and held to six hits or fewer for an 11th time in the last 16 contests.

Adam Rosales tripled in two runs with two outs in the first inning and scored on a base hit to right field by Luis Bolivar to make it 3-0 Lookouts six batters into the game. Bruce crushed a three-run home run to center field and a run-scoring fielder?s choice grounder by Ryan Hanigan plated a fourth run in the second inning to extend the visitors lead to 7-0. Stars? starter Will Inman was taken out after two frames, allowing eight hits, walking two and fanning four to fall to 0-3. The young right-hander allowed 15 earned runs in 78 2/3 innings in 13 starts at high-class A Brevard County and has yielded 16 runs in 10 2/3 innings in three starts at the double-A level.

Hanigan clubbed a home run in the seventh and Bruce?s long ball the opposite way to left-center field leading off in the eighth closed the scoring. Bruce also doubled and scored in the third and singled in just his fourth game at the double-A level. Drew Anderson, Paul Janish, Bruce and Enrique Cruz all scored twice for the visitors, who banged out 16 hits, the most allowed in a game by the Stars this season.

Avery allowed only a single to Steve Sollmann and a single and double to Adam Heether, who was the only Stars? base runner to advance as far as third base. The right-hander fanned four, did not walk a batter and improved to 7-7.

The series continues Tuesday night, as Huntsville will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Lookouts? right-hander Johnny Cueto, making his first double-A start. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on Sports Radio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Augusta (Giants) 4, West Virginia 0

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

The West Virginia Power had nine hits, and at least one baserunner in every inning of Monday night?s game against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium, but it was not enough as the GreenJackets took game one of the series with a 4-0 shutout.

Matt Weston?s two-out RBI double put Augusta on the board in the first inning. The GreenJackets increased their lead on two-out RBI singles from Bobby Felmy in the third and Manny Burris in the fifth inning. Augusta plated their final run on Tyler Graham?s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Didn't Enrique Cruz have something like a 30 game hit streak back in the High Desert days? I remember he and Glenn Woolard both had amazing streaks (Woolard with the scoreless inning streak) around the same time.

So how soon can we swap Parra for Spurling?

Even before the perfecto game, I was wondering if Parra could be a second lefty in the pen for the Brewers before the season was out. At AA, he had held lefties to a .190 BA and a sub-.500 OPS.

Give him a little AAA seasoning, and perhaps he can be an additional arm down the stretch.

Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 2

Helena Box Score:

The boys probably picked the wrong night to fire a combined one-hitter, but you know Brewer brass will congratulate them -- ground ball double to right in the 4th the only hit for the Osprey; 15 Brewer hits -- this was much needed; Eric Newton his 2nd home run; four players reached three times apiece, another four twice, and one once; media coverage in the AM...

Helena Site Game Summary:

Brewer Pitchers Toss One-Hitter

HELENA--Three Helena pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter and end the Brewers' three-game losing streak. Brewer pitching silenced the bats from the Missoula Osprey and for the second consecutive night Helena set a season high in hits, ultimately prevailing 9-2.

Brewer starter R.J. Seidel struck out six over five innings and allowed the only Osprey hit when catcher Sean Coughlin ripped a RBI double to rightfield in the fourth inning. Relievers Casey Baron and Nick Tyson followed Seidel's performance by combining for four no-hit, shutout innings.

Offensively Helena scored in five of the first six innings to take a 9-2 lead that later stood as the final. Jonathan Lucroy and Eric Newton both went 3-for-5; Newton had three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Zealous Wheeler had his second multi-hit game in a row going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Others with two hits included Caleb Gindl and Kurt Crowell. Gindl now has a seven-game hitting streak to begin his professional career. Along with his two hits, Crowell had two RBIs on the night.

All three of the Brewer wins this year have come against Missoula. The win also marks Helena's first home victory of the 2007 season. The Brewers will look to make it two in a row 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) on Tuesday night against the Osprey.
