08/27/2004 - Brewers (Santos) @ Phillies (Padilla)

Looks like the audience for this one wasn't too large. For those that missed it, Pedro The Lion looked excellently fantastic, a lot better than advertised. He has a darting sinker that he throws ~88-92mph, a slider that breaks very sharply down in the zone (about 80mph on the only one I saw the radar reading), and a wicked changeup that was also in the low 80s and which moved in to right-handed hitters quite a bit. His delivery is somewhat reminiscent of Pedro Martinez or Ramon Ortiz, who is his cousin (didn't know that until tonight).

If he threw like he did tonight in Triple-A, I don't know why he didn't have more success. I would guess his control is on-and-off, as he did have some issues hitting the glove, but his stuff is a lot better than I thought it was.

Color me very impressed.

Bill - I was impressed, too. He actually looks physically and mechanically a lot like his cousin Ramon Ortiz, and I like his delivery a lot. The quick motion he makes right before he throws his pitches will come to trick hitters like it did tonight. His pitches have a lot of movement and I love his slider...that's going to be a great pitch for him in the future. He's going to be good, hopefully he'll help our bullpen!
